1 THE BRIDGE Trinity Presbyterian Church 1400 Sheley Road Independence, MO Fax # Rev. Elizabeth M. Strobel October, 2016 Volume MMXVI, No trinitypresby@att.net Dear Friends, " The first Sunday of every October we celebrate World Communion Sunday at Trinity. While we often think of this day as one in which all Christians in the world participate in the Lord s Supper, I understand the reality is that this day is mostly recognized in North America and western Europe (please see The History of World Communion Sunday on the back page of this newsletter). I like to think of this Sunday, then, as less of a global experience and more of a reminder that as Christians we are united with God s people around the world. Every time we come to the Table for Communion, we are accompanied by the faithful from all times and places, no matter what kind of bread they break or language in which they pray. This is always the case, and World Communion Sunday is a poignant reminder of this truth. (As an aside, I find this truth very helpful when struggling to get along with my brothers and sisters in Christ. Particularly during political seasons, I find myself often impatient or dismissive of other Christians who think or act differently than I do. When I m at my best, I remind myself that we worship one Lord and gather around one Table if nothing else, we always have that in common). This World Communion Sunday will be special at Trinity. We will dedicate a new set of communion vessels Trinity and Calvary s first new item that s ours together since we united. We will continue to alternate its use with our existing Communion sets, and it will enhance the meaning and variety of our worship experiences. My prayer is that when we use it, it will remind us that God united our little slice of the world in our church s joining together - just as God unites all churches through the Holy Spirit for the ministry and mission of the church of Jesus Christ. It s a big world, and a big church. I am so deeply glad that our part of it is together! Blessings, Elizabeth

5 Thank you to everyone who attended the Presbyterian Women s (PW) meeting on Sunday, September 18! We had good discussion with lots of questions and hopefully we were able to answer those questions. Also during the meeting we held the election of officers for the Coordinating Team. The ladies who will be leading us in our next steps are Co-Moderators Lucy Berry and Karen Spader, Secretary Stacia Martin, and Treasurer Barbara Burnett. They will be meeting soon to work on things like By-Laws, mission projects, presentations, fellowship opportunities, and more. Please be patient with them and hold them in prayer as they work towards making a strong and lasting organization for us now and for our young girls and future members of Trinity. One of the most discussed topics was the formation of our small groups or circles. It is up to each woman to be involved to the extent of their choosing AND to invite their friends and family to join in the Bible study, fellowship and support these groups will offer. Child care will be available for the evening circles and can be arranged with prior notice for the morning circle. As a starting point, the following dates and times are being offered for circle formation: Circle 2: Tuesday, October 11 at 6:30 PM in the Colonial Room Circle 1: Wednesday, October 12 at 10:30 AM in the Colonial Room Circle 3: Thursday, October 13 at 6:30 PM in the Colonial Room. Again, this is a starting point! After the circles begin meeting they may change the day or time according to the majority of the group. Also, as a group, leaders will need to be chosen for each circle. Please prayerful consider if this is a role you would be willing to fulfill within your group. The Organizing Team will meet with each circle in October to help facilitate these decisions. So, pick your day and time, invite your friends and family and be in on the beginning of new and exciting adventures opening up to all of the women associated with the congregation of Trinity Presbyterian Church! Thank you all for your interest and participation. We look forward to being together in ministry and fellowship! If you have any questions, please contact any one of us. Your Organizing Team, Mari Shineman, Karen Spader and Bev Thieme
6 Elizabeth &Friends, Thanks to my Trinity friends for the prayers, calls, and cards since I ve missed church. I m doing better, still not walking very good yet. Thanks again, Love & prayers, Billie M. Cross Thanks for the prayers, visits, calls, and cards during my recent hospitalization and recuperation. They made for a speedy recovery. Dorothy Vader Thank you, Trinity, for saving the Best Choice Bar Codes. We have already collected 851 Bar Codes for Please keep saving! CHRISTIAN SYMBOL Door - a door symbolizes our invitation to engage in prayer and personal relationship with Jesus: Knock and the door will be opened to you (Matthew 7:7, NIV). Conversely, a door represents Jesus desire to be invited into our lives and hearts. I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me: (Revelation 3:20, NIV). 9 THE HISTORY OF WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY The first Sunday in October is designated as World Communion Sunday, which celebrates our oneness in Christ with all our brothers and sisters around the world. It is appropriate that World Communion Sunday is also a time when we receive the annual Peace and Global Witness Offering as a way of continuing the ancient Christian practice of sharing what we have with brothers and sisters in need. World Communion Sunday (originally called World Wide Communion Sunday) is a gift of the Presbyterian Church to the larger ecumenical church. The first celebration occurred at Shadyside Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh, PA, in 1933 where Dr. Hugh Thompson Kerr served as pastor. Davitt S. Bell (the late Clerk of Session and church historian at Shadyside) recalled that it was their attempt to bring churches together in a service of Christian unity in which everyone might receive both inspiration and information, and above all, to know how important the Church of Jesus Christ is, and how each congregation is interconnected one with another It was during the Second World War that the spirit caught hold, because we were trying to hold the world together. World Wide Communion symbolized the effort to hold things together, in a spiritual sense. It emphasized that we are one in the Spirit and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Celebration of World Wide Communion Sunday was adopted as a denominational practice in the Presbyterian Church (US) in 1936 Today, World Communion Sunday is celebrated around the world. (Excerpted from: Thank you all for your generosity we collected $ for 1 complete school of fish fingerlings and 2 shares toward another school of fish fingerlings. Daylight Saving Time Ends Sunday, November 6, 2016 WHO S WHO? ANSWER You guessed it! The answer is Ruth Washburn! The deadline for items submitted to the November Bridge is Friday, October 21. Information for the weekly News Sheet is due each week on Wednesday by 1:00 p.m.
I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which God has called you.
