January 2015/ Page 3 News from Church Council Happy New Year from your church council! It seems that this time of year inspires one to think about new ways of how we can change or improve upon things we started in the past year. So as we set our new goals, let us gather and vision how we at Central can move into the New Year with a new or renewed sense of purpose. We will be reaching out to the congregation to help with this vision and we hope to hear your thoughts and ideas at this year s Annual Meeting to be held on January 25th after the church service. As you may have noticed, ~vision~ is our theme for the Annual Meeting and we are hoping that you can attend and bring an inspiring dish to share at the Potluck after church. In case you are new our Annual Meeting is a time where we gather to review our annual reports by our Central committee chairs, celebrate our births and acknowledge those who have passed on from our midst, as well as electing new Council members and approving the 2015 annual budget. We are looking forward to seeing you and your families at this year s meeting. Respectfully submitted by: Chris Kealy and Erica Hieggelke Congregational Co-Presidents

January 2015/ Page 5 Kids At Central Kids At Central (KAC) Welcome to 2015!!!! Dear Centralities, The Sunday School Year is off to a great start! We re in year 3 of Godly Play and going deeper into wondering about the sacred stories of our Christian Faith with our Potters and Weavers (Preschool through 3 rd Grade). Our Carpenters (4 th through 6 th Grade) have been Feasting on the Word! Confirmation is going strong with a wonderful group of 8 youth wrestling with the theology and questions about faith using Sparkhouse re:form material and is led by Pastor Cindy, Pastor Verlon & David De Block. Youth Group has been meeting regularly to explore the Nooma videos by Rob Bell and spending time with the Confirmation group painting the youth room, playing games, and hearing interfaith stories from various people! While Coordinator of Intergenerational Ministries, David De Block, helps to administrate these programs, it takes a large group of dedicated volunteers to pass on the faith! Jamie Pedersen, Cindy J., Anna Copley, Rebecca E., Barbara Palecek, & Theresa Wagner are in the Sunday School rooms every week teaching our Potters, Weavers, and Carpenters. Our substitute teachers Sarah Tranum, Brooke Powers, Carl Kaiser, and Fievel Gordon help to fill in for these teachers from time to time. Gather time volunteers Siri Miller, Melissa Ford Shah, and Angela & Andrew Oberdeck make sure kids are watched, coffee is stocked, and a snack is prepared for our teachers. Youth Group is led by Bjorn Payne and Lee White in the church basement. These people are essential from week to week! Next time you see them, please make sure to say thanks and ask about their experiences if you are interested in exploring one of these roles yourself. Each volunteer receives a background check and has opportunities for formal and/or informal training on how to help out. It takes many hands to make light the work and we are thankful for all of those who are involved in the Kids At Central Ministry programs. As a congregation, we promise to raise our children in faith and put the scriptures in their hands through Baptism. As a congregation we are fulfilling these promises every week. We re thankful for the volunteers, staff, and parents who participate every week in these wonderful ministries! Blessings, KAC Committee Brooke Powers Carl Kaiser Sarah Tranum Miranda Anderson Angela Oberdeck David De Block Siri Miller Pastor Cindy Salo

January 2015/ Page 6 Kids At Central We re Celebrating Epiphany Sunday, January 4, 2015 Three things to Know! 1. Costumes! Epiphany, the 12th day after Christmas, (Technically January 6 th, 2015) celebrates the visit of the three wise men to the Christ Child. We invite the children to dress up as a king or queen for a procession into worship. 2. Cake! Following worship we ll have a King s cake with a small baby Jesus hidden inside. The lucky person who gets the slice of cake containing the baby gets to make the King s cake for next year s Epiphany event. Siri Donlea found baby Jesus in her slice of cake last year and will be providing the cake for Epiphany Sunday Wack the Star! During coffee hour there will be star piñata for kids 12 and under to strike and enjoy. This will be provided by Anna Copley! Please come and join the fun!

January 2015/ Page 10 Kids At Central CHRISTMAS CAMP 2014 Thanks for coming! On Saturday Dec. 13 th, Central families and friends gathered in our Parish Hall to celebrate the Advent season! We created crafts with Cori! We baked cookies with Brooke! Made music with Michelle and found faith with Fievel who told the Advent story Godly Play style! Additionally, the 15 Sunday School kids who were present chose where they wanted their Sunday School Offering to go by selecting gifts from the ELCA s Good Gifts Campaign. Working together they decided that from our annual global benevolence budget, Central would purchase 1 pig, 3 chicks, 3 honey bees, 6 water jugs, 2 clinic visits for a child, 50 fruit-tree seedlings, and 1 set of farm tools. CHRISTMAS PAGEANT We were Carriers of the Light! A HUGE and special thanks to Jonna Farley who has been directing the Christmas Pageant for years! We re thankful for the Assistant Directors Fievel Gordon & Rachel Rauch. Costume Director Theresa Wagner did an amazing job with the help of her new assistant Sarah Tranum. Music Director James Jelasic jumped right in and did a great job with the accompaniment. Snack duo Siri Miller and Molly Oxford kept our kids well nourished! Additionally, we d like to thank all the youth and kids who took on various roles noted in the 2014 program! We d also like to thank the various teachers who helped direct kids to and from rehearsals each Sunday! And of course, a big thank you to all the parents who listened to the pageant at home, in their cars, and other various locations so that Central members, friends, and families were able to experience this annual event! Until next year! Now that the Christmas Pageant is over, please turn in your Christmas Pageant CD s directly to Jonna Farley, the church office, or your Sunday School teacher. Thank you!

January 2015/ Page 11 Faith in Action WE SERVED UP LOVE Thanks for volunteering! Every December, Central members roll up their sleeves to help a ministry that began 30 years ago here with a small group of elderly folks. Now its own non-profit, the Community Lunch on Capitol Hill serves it s guests a hot lunch every Tuesday and Friday at Central Lutheran Church and a hot dinner at All Pilgrim s Christian Church on Broadway. Thanks to the following Central members and friends for signing up and volunteering in the month of December: Robert K, Liz L, John M, Erica H, Karen S, Chris K, Michael B, Juni N, Cori M, Andrea L, Fievel G, Brian M, Craig F, Heather F, Megan M, Daniel K, Brook P, Isaac E, Hannah E, Caden E, Chang C, Kari C, Christian C, William C, Anna C, David J, Ella J, Olivia J, Cindy J, Wayne J, Molly J, Cori M, Bruce M, Brodie M, Josiah M, Theresa W, Carl K, David K, Lois A, Jackie B, and several folks who just showed up! Many hands make light the work! For all 9 days in December there was an average of 12 volunteers who put in 5 hours each. In one month it takes about 540+ hours to feed the guests of the Community Lunch. Thanks for putting in extra effort in the month of December Central! The Community Lunch on Capitol Hill operates 52 weeks a year and can always use volunteers. Please volunteer@communitylunch.org if you d like to volunteer as an individual or sign up a group of friends and/or co-workers! Dear Centralites, Our kitchen gets a lot of use during the course of the year and it is our tradition to conduct a deep cleaning once or twice a year. We are due to perform such a cleaning and the Property Committee is seeking at least 8 volunteers to stay for about 2 hours after worship on Sunday January 4 to help with a deep cleaning of cabinets, stove top, ovens and floors in the kitchen. It s also a time for us to conduct an inventory of items that need to be replaced or replenished in the kitchen. Feel free to contact me with interest or questions, Tom Donlea

January 2015/ Page 12 Faith Formation Forum Schedule Our Sunday mornings are a good time to come together to learn and share with one another. Please join us at 9:45 am in the Parish Hall and we ll have the coffee on. January 4 - Join us for a presentation by Faith Action Network's Rev. Paul Benz who will be outlining their legislative priorities for the coming year. The discussion will include ways to reduce wealth inequality, forging a sustainable budget, dismantling the culture of violence, and protecting Washington's social safety net. Advocating for "the least of these" is one way that we seek to make this community of ours more closely resemble the one that God intends for us. Be part of this important discussion. January 11 - Central Jeopardy ~ We ll be exploring the Central Budget by playing Jeopardy. Some of the categories to look forward to are Budget & Numbers, Time, Talent & Treasures, People Served, Walking Our Walk, etc. Please come for this Faith Forum to learn where the money goes, what it does, and how we live out our catchphrase Love is Central! January 18 - With so much happening in the world, it seems more and more important to speak out as Christians supportive of social justice. How do you stay active and engaged? Join your fellow congregants to discuss ideas for keeping your social justice values integrated with busy day-to-day lives. January 25- Café Central - Join us for hot coffee and cool conversations in the Parish Hall. It s hard to believe that 2015 is already here! If you would like to sign up to bring communion bread for a month in 2015, please let Sandy know. You can either bring a fresh loaf each Sunday or bring enough loaves for the month and put them in the freezer. Sandy will then make sure a loaf is thawed for each Sunday. You can either call the office or Sandy at office@loveiscentral.org. There will also be a sign-up sheet at coffee hour. Thanks for your consideration!

January 2015/ Page 15 Space for the Spirit Nutrition Healthful edibles are not always available in many parts of the earth. Potatoes, tomatoes, onions, squash, carrots, beans and most other vegetables and some meats have exceptional worth. Exercise and diet, exercise and diet, exercise and diet~ They re common in all advice regarding good health. If we were to agree with all of the suggestions offered concerning our well being we would have a ton of information helping to make the people of our nation some of the fittest and most competent persons on the planet! 16 January 2015/ Page 16 Thank you to everyone from Central who helped prepare and serve at Community Lunch in December! With your help we served a lot of great hot meals to some wonderful people, and we also distributed a lot of socks, shoes, clothing and ponchos (remember how wet it was?).

January 2015/ Page 17 There is wonderful news from the Board of Directors at Community Lunch: Lynn Rauch has been elected President of our board! She brings a lot of experience and energy to the position as we continue to grow. In early December I enjoyed speaking at a Central Forum about what Community Lunch has been doing recently, as well as talking about the history of the organization. As we celebrate the 30th anniversary of Community Lunch, it was fun to share Lunch stories with so many Central members who have been helping out for so many years. If you have stories to share I would love to hear them to include in presentations during our yearlong anniversary celebration. Though December has ended, we need volunteers all year round, especially in January and February. In fact, Community Lunch is beginning a fourth weekly meal in January! It will be a supper on Wednesdays at 5 pm at All Pilgrims Church, and we could really use additional volunteers between 3 and 6:30 pm. Be sure to contact me if you are interested! Sincerely, Don Jensen, Director Community Lunch on Capitol Hill Director@communitylunch.org

Ferguson, Staten Island... Tragedy... and Response... Protests continue in response to grand jury decisions to not bring to trial police officers who killed unarmed blacks in Ferguson, Staten Island, and elsewhere. The decisions reveal a lot about our broken criminal justice system, skewed media and the power and creativity of ordinary citizens choosing to respond nonviolently. It also offers an opportunity for people of faith to help inspire long-overdue discussion and action. Grand Jury decisions: A wide range of critiques have been made on the evidence and on the judicial process itself. For example, the jurors were bombarded with huge amounts of contradictory testimony without much help in focusing on the most relevant evidence, thus skewing the results toward dismissing the charges. Protests: There have been significant numbers of nonviolent protests, often poorly reported by the media, in Ferguson, Staten Island, and around the country, e.g Seattle students leaving their high schools to join a protest. They have lifted up many crucial issues that haven t received this kind of sustained attention in memory. Here are a few of those issues as explored in our August and December blogs on Ferguson issues that still beg for serious discussion and action: Militarization of police that separates police from the community and from protesters, undercuts legitimate protect and serve orientation, turns loose maverick officers, and often makes confrontations more lethal; Racism such as discriminatory policies in education jobs, police behavior, and record incarceration rates; thus the protests in Ferguson and elsewhere build on decades of marginalization of people of color youth in particular and other forms of structural racism; Skewed budget priorities that squander resources on militarized police and the highest incarceration rates in the world, instead of addressing the roots of racism; Stereotypes about nonviolence and inadequate preparation and training in effective protest, especially in a context predisposed to dismiss or misreport serious protest and merge it with random acts like looting. The result has been little media attention on important issues like these. Attention that might help move public discussion and civic action in productive directions. Let us pray for God s wisdom to transform our frustration and sense of powerlessness into efforts to make this moment one of awareness and constructive action. Lutheran Peace Fellowship Churches, Christian leaders, and ordinary people of faith have played an important role in modelling and lifting up positive ways to respond. We can: Share helpful information in a thoughtful manner with friends, co-workers, and in comments on social media discussions, letters to the editor, etc. (LPF blogs on Ferguson offer live links to a wide range of helpful resources.) You may be surprised at how ordinary, sensible comments can stand out amidst the din! Participate in and encourage others to support meaningful action: protest, vigils, dialogue, moments of silence, civil disobedience, and prayer. Numerous groups are offering leadership, from the Hands Up Coalition, Code Pink, and Why We Can't Wait, to the Fellowship of Reconciliation and more than a dozen Religious Peace Fellowships including LPF. Look for opportunities to encourage addressing underlying issues like racism, police militarization, skewed priorities, etc. in congregation and community discussions, upcoming deliberations on government budgets and priorities, and many other avenues; Ferguson should serve as an inspiration for us to suggest workshops and forums on nonviolence. LPF has several effective, highly-regarded leaders guides and other materials on nonviolence. Connect with the inspiration and resources of Campaign Nonviolence, an inspiring movement of which LPF is part. (See our website for LPF nonviolence resources including our Shalom discussion essay, an AV-rich Nonviolence Forum, and our highly regarded Budget Priorities computer-based activity, as well as notice of upcoming nonviolence workshops.) In all of this, it makes sense to connect with other people who share your views in order to support one another in processing these tragedies and their implications, and in taking useful next steps. See LPF s blog for links to a variety of useful material. Blessings and Peace in this worthy effort!
