1 The Tidings December 2018 & January & February 2019 A newsletter of Central Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity Sometimes the Giving Surprises Us.. Well, here we are in that season of giving. I ve just waded through all the Giving Tuesday s and made my seasonal gifts. I lumbered out of bed the day after Thanksgiving to do my annual sociological study of the shoppers who venture out that day (no judgement) in search of the perfect gift. And when Advent comes, I ponder. I ponder the gifts I ve been given (this most often comes in the form of family and friends for me). I ponder what gifts (as in talents and abilities) God has given me in which to serve my world most faithfully. Is what I m doing making a difference? I was at a meeting this morning in which giving became the topic of discussion for a while. The woman sitting next to me, my age, is someone I don t know well, but I appreciate her bounce, her positive attitude, her creativity, her joie de vivre. As I said, we don t know each other well, but she is aware of what I do for a living. When the meeting was over, she shared a story with me about giving that I d like to share with you here. She told me that since she has no children, she loves to do giving tree gifts this time of year. She then went on to tell me a story about the year she got a tag for a young boy who asked for blanket pajamas. She said she didn t know blanket pajamas were a thing, so she guessed and bought pajamas and made a quilt with the young man s name written in bold letters on it. She seemed a bit worried that this may not have been just what the boy was expecting, but she crossed her fingers. She found out later that the young boy had two older brothers. All three brothers had been promised homemade quilts from their grandmother. The two older brothers had already received theirs, but the youngest grandchild was still waiting. After Christmas had come and gone, and my friend gave her handmade quilt with the boys name, she heard some unsettling news. The young boy s grandmother had died (actually quite violently, by murder). When she told me this, both of our eyes welled in tears. I said something like, Whoa, look at the impact of that gift! Look at the power of the universe (I say universe when I m not sure someone shares a belief in God). And then we just sat there in silence for a moment, taking in the power of that story. continued on page 3...

Of course, I then piped up with, You know that story s going to end up in a sermon somewhere, right? She laughed and gave me permission to tell it. It taught me to not ever, ever underestimate the power in giving. In giving of one s self, one s time, one s trust, one s heart. Enjoy this season of giving, dear Centralites. I hope you too get some amazing surprises. Peace and Blessings, Pastor Cindy Welcome New Members New Members! On Sunday, November 11th we welcomed three new members to our congregation. This year the Sunday School will be performing Carriers of the Light celebrating the passing of God's Light from Mary to Joseph to the animals in the manger, from the shepherds in the countryside to wise sages in the east and on to all of us! Lessons & Carols Sunday December 30 The 1 st Sunday of Christmas is a great time to RE-CONNECT with our young adults who have been off exploring the world. This of course can mean they re off at college, recently entered the workforce, or just haven t been able to make it to church lately. Whatever the reason, we invite them to come and help lead worship and then go to brunch and hear each other s stories. Please Brian Anderson at cim@loveiscentral.org if you have questions or would like to participate. Epiphany Celebration on Sunday, January 6 Three things to Know! 1. Costumes! Epiphany, the 12 th day after Christmas, celebrates the visit of the three wise men to the Christ Child. We invite the children to dress up as a king or queen for a procession into worship. 2. Cake! Following worship we ll have a King s cake with a small baby Jesus hidden inside. The lucky person who gets the slice of cake containing the baby gets to make the King s cake for next year s Epiphany event. 3. Wack the Star! During coffee hour there will be star piñata for kids 12 and under to strike and enjoy.

These issues, which are wrapped up in America s unexamined history, are rarely talked about with this level of candor, insight and persuasiveness. January 27 ~ Café Central ~ Coffee and Conversation February 3 ~ Living the Questions 2.0 A Kingdom without Walls ~ This video discussion series brings together over thirty highly acclaimed scholars, theologians and other experts in a video exploration of an open, inclusive, broad-minded Christianity. February 10 ~ Living the Questions 2.0 Social Justice: Realizing God s Vision ~ FOCUS: Being a person of faith demands balancing spiritual pursuits with action. In a society which is often unjust, inequitable, and whose very structures are responsible for generating untold suffering and poverty, we are compelled to pursue social justice as an expression of hope in realizing a better world. continued on the following page...

10 December 2018, January and February 2019/ Page 10 Vis ioning Tas k ForceNew s Visioning Task Force 2.0 What s next for Central? It is exciting to see the enthusiasm, questions and dialogue generated with the first wave of our Visioning Task Force (VTF 1.0). We heard from many of you at the home gatherings and learned about inspiring things happening elsewhere during visits to other churches. Through a series of five open conversations, we have gained a better understanding of how our congregation views our situation today and what it sees as top priorities for our collective efforts going forward. In response to what the Task Force heard over the summer, the next steps planned and listed below are positive, constructive opportunities that we hope will draw you in and help us begin to work toward a new calling and a revitalized sense of mission. Getting to know our Capitol Hill neighbors (churches, businesses, and other organizations) to build connections, learn what they view as our neighborhood s greatest needs, and explore potential ministry partnerships, including our partnership with Immanuel Lutheran. Reaching out to Centralites that we haven t seen for a while, to let them know we are thinking about them, hear their life updates, and encourage them back to worship. Reviewing our current staffing model with the aim to support our faith community and strengthen our ability to carry out our call, mission, and strategic direction. Developing a financial plan to outline anticipated expenses to renovate and maintain our buildings. The approach to each task will be determined by the group working on it. At the Stewardship Potluck on October 28 th, participants were invited to indicate which of these work groups they wanted to join on blue sheets listing ways to weigh in, plug in, and pray in. If you missed the potluck discussions, watch for your blue sheet in the mail or ask a VTF member how to get one. And please let us know if you want to be on the Task Force. In addition to convening the working groups, VTF 2.0 will solicit multiple bids for expert assistance in two areas. First, we will look for an external facilitator to help us establish a strategic direction for the future and determine what barriers exist to executing our collective vision for our congregation. Second, we will get bids from firms that can do a structural assessment of the church, help us develop cost estimates for long-term maintenance of both buildings, and do a basic site feasibility study to examine the redevelopment potential of some or all of our site. continued on the following page...

11 December 2018, January and February 2019/ Page 11 Visioning Task Force News Requests for funding to hire a facilitator and an architectural/engineering firm will be presented to the congregation at the annual meeting in January If approved, we expect to engage the facilitator in February. VTF 2.0 will continue to host forums, be available at Café Central Sundays, and host regular congregational touch points. We ask you to pray for this effort. Indeed, the future is in OUR hands! We take this process very seriously and prayerfully request your support and input to achieve the greatest possible outcome for Central. In loving appreciation, Your VTF Leadership Team, Cori Myka, Julia Maywald, Tom Donlea, and Karen Sy For Your Consideration Spirit Living ~ January 6 & February 3 at 7 pm ~ Oasis Room (upstairs in the Parish You are invited to join in Central s grass-roots, daily spirituality movement. We intend to enter into individual daily meditation and meet periodically to reflect with others about how this way of living in the spirit affects our journey with Christ. We will start with this book: I ve Been Thinking: Reflections, Prayers, and Meditations for a Meaningful Life by Maria Shriver. It s a book of reflections for those seeking wisdom, guidance, encouragement, and inspiration on the road to a meaningful life. As a prominent woman juggling many roles, Maria Shriver knows just how surprising, unpredictable, and stressful everyday life can be. Join us for prayerful reflection and help us shape this new means of connection. Other resources that you may find helpful: Sacred Space an interactive, on-line beautiful and profound daily prayer and scripture practice provided by Irish Jesuits ( The site or app guides one to move through several screens to meditative music. 16 December 2018, January and February 2019/ Page 16 Faith and Everyday Life by Lutheran Counseling Network December Somewhere in the din of it all Beneath the rubble of our discontent There lies in the heart of the world In the soul of each of us A tender village How shall we remember? Author unknown I think about the village that lies in the soul of each of us as I read 1 John 4: I am heartened. John reminds us: God lives in us and his love is perfected in us. I m also enlivened by the idea of lying still as the village sometimes must. For so many of us this season, we struggle to love as God would have us love and to operate out of the village within that can act as manger for our God. This is the central message of Advent, isn t it? We prepare ourselves to greet God and to remember that He came into the world to baptize it. God confirms for us the grace of creation - so good, He chose to live in it with us. And let s face it; it takes a village to love as we think God would have us. Love often looks strong and challenging; sometimes, tender and soft. It calls upon all parts of the created good - all parts of the village within - to see, know, name and serve our sisters and brothers. When we struggle in this season, it is good to take heart in the promise of Bethlehem. Lying still, awaiting God. Written by a staff member of Lutheran Counseling Network
