MICHAEL CASE Priest-in-Charge Dear People of Holy Nativity, Summer is upon us once again. It seems not long ago people were complaining about the amount of snow. Now people are complaining about the heat. And already the days are getting shorter. But for now school is out, camps are in full swing at Paradise Point, and everyone is trying to find ways to keep cool. It is also that time of year when people are traveling. Some people have already returned from trips, some are currently on the road, and others are still in the planning stages of their summer adventures. As always, our prayers are with those who are away as we await their safe return. Meanwhile, here at Holy Nativity we keep moving forward. The annual yard sale has come and gone. A big thank you to everyone who worked to make the event such a huge success. The Be Our Guest meals continue the first two Wednesdays of every month (a huge thank you to this ministry as well). And of course, services continue each Sunday at 9:30 a.m. Given the turn-out and reception of the Lenten study on the Book of Common Prayer, I would like to start planning a new formation/ study group. We would handle this the same way divide the topic up over a 5-6 week span. One thought had been to work from a text, and to possibly meet every other week rather than weekly. I will be seeking input on Sundays to see who is interested in exploring prayer as a topic. Be on the lookout for additional information. As we continue through the season of Pentecost, how is the Spirit calling us to live deeper into the call and mission of the church? What opportunities for fellowship, for reflection, or for personal study is God calling us to take advantage of? I m sure if we open ourselves, the Spirit will guide us into new adventures and experiences. In Christ s love, Michael+

2 Senior Warden s Report The eleven Myers made it safely back to Meridian. We celebrated the marriage of my Granddaughter. What a beautiful wedding with beautiful weather. I have been going to the BOG meals. I wish that more from the Parish would attend, to see what a wonderful ministry is happening every first and second Wednesday of the month. I had a person that attends the meals tell me that they have found a church and a family that loves them. You never know when you are going to touch someone and give them hope. I know that when this person was telling me this it touched my heart. The Highlander Bagpipers and Dancers, came and entertained us at the Raise the Roof Fundraiser. If you missed it they told us that they would come again to entertain us. It was a fun night. Thank you, Mary, for organizing our Raise the Roof Fundraiser. I want to give a big thank you to Lorraine and her family plus all the others that worked on the Yard Sale. I am so glad that we have people in our Parish that are willing to do the Yard Sale. All I can say is, it is hard work. We have 4 of our young girls that are attending Paradise Church camp with the help from the Parish putting their money in the blessing bank each Sunday. Hopefully they will give us a report when they return. I think, just maybe, we are finally getting our summer. Enjoy your summer and if you are in town be sure to come because we miss you. Blessings, JoAnn May Vestry Highlights By JoAnn Myers, Senior Warden Treasurer s Report Mike Magette Mike went over the budget and explained a few things. He asked if we needed all of these reports printed out every month for the meeting? We like the Treasurer s report and the Year to date for the meetings. The others can be printed out quarterly for the meetings. Vestry Reports: Buildings and Grounds Phil Street: Phil is trying to get the Rectory roof repair scheduled at this point it is supposed to be next week. We actually had some leaking in the rectory this last week, so this is urgent. The BOG storage room had water damage that occurred in one of the cabinets over the winter. The lawnmower has been fixed. Fellowship Mary Buchanan: The Raise the Roof fundraiser is moving forward for June 10 th. There may be Scottish dancers. Mary mentioned that Rick Peterson s Birthday is this week so she was going to get him a cake. Office Cindy Wolfenbarger: Cindy said she had changed the listing of the church for the telephone directory.but needs to change it to the proper name Episcopal Church of the Holy Nativity. She asked Phil if he could get the parts out of the reader board that we need to change.they are really tight. She also asked if we could sell that large hutch at the yard sale (the one in the rectory meeting room). It was decided to sell it. Summer Vestry Meetings Vestry will meet June 28 th, July 19 th, and August 16 th. Mike Magette offered to have one of them at his house with a meal or BBQ if we would like.and bring spouses? Meeting adjourned at 8:20 pm. 2

3 Raise the Roof Event By Mary Buchanan The Raise The Roof event held on June 3rd was attended by a number of individuals from our parish, all contributing to the wonderful potluck which was greatly enjoyed by all in attendance. Everyone loosened their pursestrings that evening as we were able to collect $1,367 from the silent auction and dinner fee paid at the door. I wish to thank everyone who donated the terrific items for our silent auction. We had some truly wonderful things to bid upon. Those items that were not collected and taken home that evening were available for bids the following Sunday morning, resulting in even more donations. As part of our entertainment for the evening we were treated to a delightful performance by the Pipes and Drums of the Boise Highlanders: along with 4 Scottish Dancers. The wonderful bagpipe music filled the Parish Hall and watching the young girls dancing their jigs in their colorful tartans was such fun. We hope to have them back again for other events in the future. Special thanks to Mike, Nick and Kellen Magette for serving as our cashiers for the evening. 6 What is the Be Our Guest Ministry All About? About 8 Years ago (no one can really put a date on it), Deacon Paula Egbert saw a need to provide a nutritious meal for the less fortunate. She organized a small band of parishioners (probably 8 or 10 of us) and we put together the Be Our Guest outreach program. Each of the original volunteers contributed from our home kitchens and personal funds to make a meal on the 1 st and 2 nd Wednesday of each month. The Church furnished the facility. At the first meal, we only fed 8 people and the volunteers, but it was a wonderful experience. People were asked to pick a place at a table, and the volunteers served a good nutritious meal. The idea was to provide a meal and service to those present, rather than having them go through a line with a tray. As the ministry grew, a need to provide items not obtainable with food stamps was identified (such as toilet tissue, laundry soap and toiletries). Bags of needed items were prepared and distributed once a month, providing another service to those in need. The ministry continued to grow, and donations of gently used clothing from the congregation developed into a clothing bank, providing one more much needed service. As our congregation continued to grow, a monthly budget allotment was provided to buy food and needed items for this ministry. Because of the generosity of this congregation, and the hard work and dedication of the volunteers in this ministry, we are feeding anywhere from people twice a month. This ministry, which started as a form of service, has grown into one of fellowship as well. Through the dedication of this volunteer group (which is still around 10 people, including 4 from the original group), Holy Nativity was awarded the Heart and Hands award at the 2016 Diocesan Convention. However, we need your help and support to continue this wonderful outreach program offered here at Holy Nativity. We need your help to ensure we move beyond service only, and continue to grow the idea of fellowship. We need your help to make this move beyond feeding those in need to truly being a gathering of the community of God. Here is what you can do to help: Attend the meals on the 1 st and 2 nd Wednesdays of each month to join in the fellowship. This is a chance to meet others, to sit with someone from outside the church and get to know them. Volunteer to help serve, cook or help clean-up after. This is an open ministry, and many hands make light work. Donate gently used items to the clothing bank. Or donate toiletries, laundry and dish soap, or money earmarked for the Be Our Guest Ministry. Bring someone new to the meal. We want this to be a community event. Friends, family and neighbors are always welcome. With your help and support, the Be Our Guest Ministry can continue to grow, and Holy Nativity can continue to demonstrate our presence as the Heart and Hands of Christ in the community. 7 Remembering Ruth Jacobs By Robert Burnz Ruth Jean Jacobs was born May 11, 1922, and grew up in Euclid, Ohio. After high school, she became a Registered Nurse and at the age of 21 enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a nurse at two field hospitals in France. After two years there she returned to the States due to her mother s serious illness and subsequent death. Ruth headed to California and was working as a nurse when she attended a dance at the Officers Club in Long Beach. There she met a Marine Pilot named Kerwin W. Jake Jacobs and four months later they were married at the El Toro Marine Corps Air Base chapel. They raised four children in southern California where she continued her nursing career. In 1972, she joined the Orange County Public Health Department, working in immunization clinics. Ruth and Jake purchased a second home in La Grande, Oregon in 1982, near their oldest daughter s family, and spent their summers there for the next ten years, enjoying the rural atmosphere, their grandchildren s activities and square dancing. In 1994 they moved to Meridian, Idaho, near their youngest daughter s family. They continued square dancing and Ruth joined the Church of the Holy Nativity. She loved to cook and is especially remembered for her jams and canned fruit and vegetables. Ruth was also quite the card player and enjoyed a good game of bridge or pinochle. In her quieter moments, she enjoyed stitchery and crocheting. In 2014, after 65 years of marriage, Jake passed away and was buried in the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery. Ruth died at home in Boise on May 4, 2017 and is also buried at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery. Ruth is survived by all four of their children: Roger Jacobs, Linda Hill, Bruce Jacobs and Janice Avera, ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
