Cherry Lane Meridian, Idaho (208) SUNDAY WORSHIP 9:30 AM Dear People of, As we enter the month of February, I find myself thinking about things put off. Our Annual Meeting, for example. Typically we would have held the Annual Meeting the last Sunday in January. And, indeed, the meeting was scheduled for January 27th. But, due to the painting of the floor in the gym (I mean Parish Hall), we needed to wait just a bit more to allow the floor to properly cure something we had not planned on when we started. The wait will be worth it, however, as the old gym is truly no more. It truly is the Parish Hall, with no more basketball hoops, score board or free-throw and boundary lines visible on the floor. The postponement of the Annual meeting was difficult for some, because some like to really keep the familiar schedule. And for the most part, I can t say that I blame them. I tend to be a bit of a stickler for schedules and traditions. And all you have to do is ask Peter to know I have a difficult time being late for things 15 minutes before it s schedule is not early, it s just on time. However, there are certain things for which I procrastinate. And here you can ask Mary Buchanan. When it comes to the newsletter, I am always late. Certain things I review for the church have to come at certain times simply because of my limited time as a part-time Priest-in- Charge. Things like review of the service bulletin have to be completed in a certain way so as not to over-reach my time commitments. But the newsletter happens every month, and the deadline is always the same, and yet I find myself telling Mary, I ll have it to you soon. I m so grateful she is patient. Continued on page 2
2 FEBRUARY 2019 Page 2 Rev. Michael Case Message Continued from page 1 So what does all this rambling have to do with the message I m supposed to provide here? Each month I try to provide something that is somewhat educational or uplifting, and sometimes that s a challenge. So when I began to think about my procrastination of the newsletter, it made me think about all the other things we procrastinate and put off for another day. Things like calling a friend (who has been on our mind, and might be in need, but there will be time later). Or like starting that scripture study routine we resolved to do on New Year s (we ve already missed it, so one more day won t hurt). Or developing new prayer or devotional practices (there are so many things to get done in a day, but if I just focus on getting all these other things done first I ll eventually find time for prayer and devotional). Or telling a loved one how much they truly mean to us (they ll be there later, and I m sure they already know). Some things are worth putting off for example, an Annual Meeting to allow people to see our beautified Parish Hall as a visual reminder of just how far this parish has really come through hard work and dedication. Some things well, not so much. My goal for February is to provide Mary with a newsletter article (that hopefully has something uplifting or educational) on time. But also, to look at other things I might be putting off that I really shouldn t be. What in your life might you be procrastinating that you really shouldn t? As we move into February, and finally hold our Annual Meeting to dream God s dreams for Holy Nativity, may the Spirit guide us all in knowing what might wait, and what should not. Your servant in Christ always, Michael + 2:7 Secret Sister Reveal Saturday, Feb. 16 Noon Join us for our annual Secret Sister Reveal luncheon where you learn who your Secret Sister was this past year and have the opportunity to draw a new name for the coming year. Bring a salad or soup to share. Bread, beverages and dessert will be provided If you haven t participated in this fun activity in the past, please consider being a part. It s a fun way to remember someone and do small acts of kindness that can mean so much. Questions? Contact Sue Pahlas at (208)
3 FEBRUARY 2019 Page 3 JANUARY VESTRY HIGHLIGHTS The meeting opened at 6:33 PM with Shawna Myers reading the Prayer for Vestries. Vestry Minutes Cindy Wolfenbarger The corrected minutes were approved by the vestry on Dec. 23rd by . Treasurers Report Mike Magette Mike handed out and reviewed the reports. There was discussion regarding the 2019 budget. We continue to do very well financially. Vestry Reports: Mary Buchanan Fellowship: Mary obtained 3 bids to have the cupboards in the kitchen sanded, primed and painted. The lowest bid was from Idaho Professional Painting who will do the job for $1,165. Before we have this done, the dishwasher needs to be moved. Phil Street talked to the man who originally installed the new appliances. He said he could fix the wiring and move the dishwasher for $50/hour and he predicted it would take about 4-5 hours. Mary needs to talk to Phil about these projects.. Action Items 1. Priest In Charge: Fr. Michael, Jo Ann M. and Canon Lucinda Ashby met last week and prepared a new annual contract for Fr. Michael. It has been sent to the Bishop for his signature. 2. Budget: Mike handed out copies of the proposed 2019 budget. At this point we have $151,000 in pledges. He reviewed specific items and they were discussed. There will need to be some adjustments but the Vestry approved what he presented. 3. Annual Meeting: Due to the Parish Hall floor being refinished, we will not be able to have the annual meeting on Jan. 27th as planned. It was decided to postpone the meeting until Feb. 10th. In the meantime, coffee hour and the people who walk in the Parish Hall on Fridays will use the large classroom. Choir will practice will be shifted to Tuesday evenings and the bagpipers will be in the large classroom on Thursday evenings. JoAnn has notified the Slavic church and New Hope. 4. Women s Group Fund: The Women s Group fund totals $ Kay Grooms took a poll of the women in the church to see what should be done with the money. The majority wanted it to go to the Kitchen Improvement fund. So the money will be transferred. 5. Tables in the Parish Hall: There were some suggestions that the old round tables be put back in the Parish Hall when the floor is done. Table cloths would have to be purchased and washed after each use. The round tables are very heavy and there is concern that they would scratch the floor. It was decided that we continue to use the newer rectangle tables like we have been. We have new folding chairs that we will be using. We have about 200 of the old chairs and the round tables to get rid of. It was suggested that they be put on Craig s list and give them away to anyone who wants them. 6. Locking mailbox: There is a concern that mail has been missing. Would it be possible to get a locking mailbox for the front of the rectory? The members thought this would be a very good idea so we will do some pricing. 7. Bishop Brian Thom: The Bishop was at our meeting tonight to congratulate our success and encourage us in our growth. He mentioned several markers that indicate we are a growing and thriving church. We had an informal discussion and shared some questions. The meeting ended at 8:00PM with all praying the Lord s Prayer. Respectfully submitted, Cindy Wolfenbarger, Vestry Clerk

6 FEBRUARY 2019 Page 6 Revisit Your First Aid Kit By: Ada County Emergency Management Provided by Bob Burnz First aid kits are a crucial part of your 72-hour kits, but often get used at different times other than disasters. They can be used hiking, camping, and boating. As you use items in your first aid kits, it s important to remember to replace them. You should also go through your first aid kits regularly to replace old or expired supplies. Be sure to include personal items if you buy a kit from a store. These items can include medications, emergency phone numbers or other items that have been recommended by your health-care provider. It s also important to include a flashlight or headlamp and extra batteries for those dark times. The American Red Cross has provided a checklist of all the items needed in your first aid kit. First Aid Checklist 2 absorbent compress dressings (5x9 inches) 2 hydrocortisone ointment packets 25 adhesive bandages (assorted sizes) Scissors 1 adhesive cloth tape (10 yards x 1 inch) 1 roller bandage (3 inches wide) 5 antibiotic ointment packets 1 roller bandage (4 inches wide) 5 antiseptic wipe packets 5 sterile gauze pads (3x3 inches) 2 packets of aspirin ( 81 mg each) 5 sterile gauze pads (4x4 inches) 1 space blanket Oral thermometer (non-mercury/nonglass) 1 breathing barrier 2 triangular bandages 1 instant cold compress Tweezers 2 pair of nonlatex gloves Take a First Aid Class Knowing how to properly use your first aid kit is equally as important as having one. First aid training is a good idea for everyone and is available through the American Red Cross. Learning basic first aid can help preserve a life until first responders arrive. Having the skills and being equipped go hand in hand. It s also a good idea to take refresher first aid courses. To learn more about first aid classes offered by the American Red Cross, visit this link: First aid instruction booklet
