Cherry Lane Meridian, Idaho (208) SUNDAY WORSHIP 9:30 AM Monthly Message from The Rev. Michael Case, Priest-in-Charge Dear People of Holy Nativity, It is hard to believe July has come and gone. We are full-on into Summer, although I was reminded by a schoolaged youth recently that summer is almost over. For him, of course, that is because school will begin at the end of August. For him, change is coming. For him the end of summer is marked by the beginning of school. Our lives are marked by continual changes continual endings and beginnings. I spent the last weekend of July at Paradise Point as Chaplin for the teen camp. For me this was a time of rest and reflection a time to be still while providing spiritual support, and teaching kids about Eucharist. It was also a chance to watch youth from our Diocese and across our State experience beginnings and endings of their own. Camp is one of those places where relationships develop quickly some last only the week, some last a lifetime. During this time, these youth go through a lot of growth. They begin letting go of their childhood as they have new experiences, and learn new things about themselves and the world around them. At the end of camp there are joyful reunitings with family, and tearful goodbyes with newfound friends. When they leave camp, these youth are not the same people that arrived at the beginning of the week. Upon returning home, I attended services at All Saints in Boise where the end of a ministry was celebrated. A change is taking place as one Rector retires and the congregation searches for the next. During this process both the Rector who is retiring and the congregation that is searching, will go through a process of change. Determining what old Continued on page 2

2 AUGUST 2018 Page 2 Monthly Message from The Rev. Michael Case Continued from page 1 things must end, what things must carry through, and what new things must begin. As I was watching the events at camp, and contemplating the events that would be taking place at All Saints, I began thinking of this continual cycle of change. Seasons change. Children grow up. People retire and move on. Ministries end and new ones begin. We are in a constant process of change determining what old things we must lay down, what things we must maintain, and what new things we must take up. Through all this change through all these endings, all these beginnings, all this growth the Spirit is present to guide and direct. To help us make the choices we face through the inevitable change that will come. We just have to take the time to be still to be present and to listen. What changes are you facing? What things are you in need of letting go? Of keeping? Of taking up? And where are those places where you can find the stillness you need to hear how the Spirit is guiding you? Mark Your Calendar and Plan to Attend Our SUMMER PICNIC Sunday, Sept. 9th Storey Park (Blue Picnic Shelter) 5:00 to 7:00 pm Holy Nativity will provide: Fried chicken Utensils, plates & napkins Water, iced tea, & lemonade If you have questions or are willing to help out contact: Carrie Magette (208) Eucharistic Minister Training Training will be held at 11:30 a.m. in the Rectory on the following dates: Eucharistic Ministers Sunday August 5 Eucharistic Visitors Sunday August 26 In Christ s love, Michael +

3 AUGUST 2018 Page 3 JULY VESTRY HIGHLIGHTS The meeting started at 6:33 PM with Cindy Wolfenbarger reading the Prayer for Vestries. June Vestry Minutes Cindy Wolfenbarger The corrected June minutes were approved by on June 24, Treasurer s Report Mike Magette Mike reviewed June Treasurer s reports with the vestry. Income was down slightly due to summer and people being on vacation, but we are still doing well. VESTRY REPORTS: Building and Grounds Garry Mattson Garry asked what the re-lamping project is that was mentioned in an from Clay Lisle. Clay has been working on this for a couple years. He is mapping all of the light fixtures and bulbs so that Idaho Power can replace and up-date them at no cost to us since we are a non-profit. When this is completed it should save on our electric bill. Garry was asked if he remembered what the repair of our parking lot would cost. He will check on that. Capital Campaign Mike Magette Mike said that not a lot has been done yet. He saw a computer program called What if? that we could use to help present the plan. It would have photos of what the church looks like now and what it could look like. This would include new landscaping, new parking lot and improvements to the church grounds. This may also include building a bell tower for our bell. JoAnn mentioned that the next time the sprinkler people work on the yard, they can install a drip line into the rock area between the church buildings so that area can be watered when we make landscape changes. It was suggested that Becky Rowell and Peter Haskins be asked to help plan some landscaping. Stewardship Shawna Myers Shawna had questions from the Stewardship Committee (Brian Grassley, Barbara Samperisi and Gladys Clymens). There was some concern about the Stewardship Campaign and the Capital Campaign happening at the same time. Fr Michael explained that Stewardship is an on-going, way of life. The Capital Campaign will be a 3-5 year plan that will address the church property and hiring a full-time priest. When should the Stewardship campaign begin? The first part of October, with the Consecration Sunday being Nov. 18th. Father Michael will include stewardship themes in his sermons and will have a person each Sunday share a personal story about stewardship in their life. ACTION ITEMS: Painting of the Parish Hall Jo Ann Myers Jo Ann found out that the $1200 estimate would paint the 6 areas of the parish hall from the ceiling to the benches or floor. The paint would match what is on the walls now. This will probably be at least half of the room. If it doesn t match or doesn t look good.we can paint the rest. We all agreed to proceed with the paint job. Paradise Point Campaign Jo Ann Myers The committee for the Paradise Point Campaign wants us to give them an amount that we will pledge to the 3 year project. There was some discussion. There are concerns that we have our own Capital Campaign and the Stewardship drive going on as well. We finally decided to pledge $10,000 over the 3 years. Babysitter for the Nursery Maddie Wheeler will not be able to take care of the nursery during the coming school year. Cindy will advertise that we need a babysitter.at least 13 years old. He/She needs to take a babysitting course at the YMCA or Red Cross and will also need the Safeguarding God s Children training. The pay is $100/month. The meeting closed at 8:00 PM with all praying the Lord s prayer. Respectfully submitted, Cindy Wolfenbarger, Vestry CLerk Stay Cool!

5 AUGUST 2018 Page 5 COOL CLEAR WATER From Ada County Emergency Management Provided by Bob Burnz Idaho is fortunate to have many rivers, streams, and lakes, but is this water safe to drink? Health agencies and survival experts agree that all surface water should be treated before it is considered safe for consumption. Even though the water may look clear, it could be contaminated with a variety of microorganisms or chemicals that will make a person sick. The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Water Quality Division provides information about the state s surface, ground, and drinking water resources. You can view this information at WHAT S WRONG WITH THE WATER? The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) states that the following pathogens could be hiding in any untreated or poorly treated water. PATHOGEN CAUSE HEALTH EFFECTS Protozoa - Cryptosporidium Giardia intestinalis Human and animal fecal waste Gastrointestinal illness (diarrhea, vomiting, cramps) Bacteria - Slamonella, E. coli, Campylobacter, Chigella Human and animal fecal waste Gastrointestinal illness (diarrhea, vomiting, cramps) Viruses - enterovirus, hepatitis A, norovirus, rotavirus Human and animal fecal waste Gastrointestinal illness (diarrhea, vomiting, cramps) hepatitis, meningitis Water near developed areas runs the risk of even more contaminants. The EPA points out that these potential additional sources include: chemical fertilizers, pesticides, improperly disposed of household chemicals, automobile fluids, road deicing/anti-icing agents, sediments, metals, and vehicle emissions. It is vital that water is treated before it is consumed. Whether a person is trying to survive in the backcountry or replenish supplies after a disaster, learning proper water treatment techniques can be a life saving skill. TREAT IT BEFORE YOU DRINK IT The first step in water treatment should be to strain the water through a screen or cloth to remove any large particles. After that is done, the CDC suggests using one or more of the following methods. BOILING - Keeping water at a rolling boil for one minute is highly effective against protozoa, bacteria, and viruses. At elevations above 6500 ft., boil for three minutes. Let the water cool before drinking. FILTRATION - Use a NSF Standard 53 or 58 rated cyst reduction removal filter with an absolute pore size of 0.3 microns or less. These filters will be highly effective against protozoa, moderately effective against bacteria and not effective against viruses. DISINFECTION - This may be accomplished by using chlorine or iodine. Iodine tablets should be used according to the manufacturers instructions. Chlorine disinfection can be done with two drops of household bleach per quart of water. Stir the mixture well and let stand for 30 minutes before drinking. Disinfection is highly effective against viruses and bacteria. It is moderately effective against Giardia and not effective against Cryptosporidium. PLEASE NOTE: When boiling water is not an option, a combination of filtration and disinfection is recommended. For more information on the emergency treatment of drinking water visit the EPA website.
