1 October 1, 2017 Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. Gathering (Leader, People) The Lord be with you. And also with you. Our help comes in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth. All praise, honor, and glory be unto God, now and forevermore. This is the day which the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it. Prelude My Lord, What a Mornin Arr. H.T. Burleigh Clayton Mathews, Baritone Call to Worship (Leader, People) Praise the Lord who is our provider. God brought us out of bondage and has made us free. Glorious are the deeds of our God, and mighty are his acts. Let us worship God. * Hymn No. 378 We Wait the Peaceful Kingdom * Call to Confession * Prayer of Confession (Unison) Righteous God, we confess that we have not lived as your obedient children. We have honored you with our words, but we have denied you with our actions. We have not pursued the mind of Christ, who took the form of a servant, for we have acted with selfish ambition. We have put our interests before the interests of others and have not regarded them in humility. Forgive us our arrogance, awaken our hearts to sincere repentance and enable us to will and to work for your good pleasure, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. (Silent Prayer) Let the whole church say Amen! * Kyrie * Assurance of Pardon (Leader, People) Friends, believe in the good news In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Rest in the assurance of God s grace, and be at peace. Amen * Gloria Patri Hymn No. 581 Prayer for Illumination THE WORD First Reading Matthew 21: NT Page 23 Psalm 78:1-4, (refrain) (refrain) 1 Hear my teaching, O my people; incline your ears to the words of my mouth 2 I will open my mouth in a parable; I will declare the mysteries of ancient times- 3 that which we have heard and known, and what our forebears have told us, we will not hide from their children. 4 We will recount to the generations to come the praiseworthy deeds and the power of the Lord, and the wonderful works God has done. 12 God worked marvels in the sight of their ancestors, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan, 13 splitting open the sea and letting them pass through; making the waters stand up like walls; 14 leading them with a cloud by day, and all the night with a glow of fire; 15 splitting the rocks in the wilderness and giving them drink as from the deep; 16 bringing streams out of a rock, making them flow down like a river. (refrain)

3 Music for October 1 Prelude: My Lord, What a Mornin, Arr. H.T. Burleigh Born in Erie, PA, Harry T. Burleigh was a multi-talented composer, singer and instrumentalist. The son of freed slaves, Burleigh was accepted to the National Conservatory of Music in New York at the age of 26. From there, he had a rich career, not only arranging and composing but also coaching and inspiring his contemporaries. In his career, he touched the lives and music of such notable musicians as Anton Dvorak, Marian Anderson, Paul Robeson, Eubie Blake and numerous others. Anthem: Grant Unto Us Thy Peace, O Lord, Felix Mendelssohn The revival of J.S. Bach s St. Matthew Passion led Felix Mendelssohn to considerable fame by the age of 20. This newfound fame led to a period of international travel and of considerable productivity. His anthem, Verleih uns Frieden (Grant Unto Us Thy Peace) was written during this period after a visit to the Vatican. November 4 of this year marks the 170th anniversary of Mendelssohn s death. Translation: Grant unto us Thy peace, O Lord, grant us Thy peace enduring! For there is none with the strength, who could so firmly defend us. For thou art our hope and safety. Offertory / Postlude - from Sonata No. 4, Felix Mendelssohn The Six Organ Sonatas of Felix Mendelssohn were published in 1845 as a result of a commission from the Coventry and Hollier publishers. The commission was for a set of three Voluntaries for Organ. Mendelssohn asked to expand the commission to 12 Studies for Organ and ultimately settled on six Sonatas. The Sonatas are said to be the composers attempt to embody [his] way of conceiving and treating the organ. The term Sonata as applied to these pieces should not invoke the classical style, as to indicate form. Rather, it is an older use of the term as to indicate a collection of instrumental pieces. Sonata No. 4 from which todays Offertory and Postlude are taken, is said to have been written last. This morning we will hear the third movement as our Offertory and the first movement as our Postlude. McCaffrey Receipts: BECAUSE OF YOU, McCaffrey receipts continue to support the maintenance and the beautification of our Historic Church. Please keep the receipts coming and thank you for supporting our Historic Church. Friendship Pads: You have seen the reminder in the bulletin and heard the announcement from the pulpit, but why sign the Friendship Pad? After the ushers gather them up each week, they are dropped off at the office. From there, first time visitors are contacted, names of people who wish to join are given to the Membership Committee, address changes are noted, and those who desire a call are called. After that, they are given to the Membership Cares Committee, who keeps track of all members' attendance. When it is noticed that someone hasn't been here for a length of time, they are contacted either by letter or by phone. Recently it has been noted that around a third of those attending have not been signing in, based on the number of names versus the ushers' count.
