2 Music for November 13 Prelude: Concert Variations on Slane (Be Thou My Vision) arr. Catherine McMichael A very challenging theme and set of variations on the traditional hymn tune Slane, composer Catherine McMichael writes of Be Thou My Vision one of the most well-loved hymns in the world, often this tune is sweet. This arrangement is all about POWER, with fabulous harmonies underneath the familiar tune. Opening deceptively calm, each verse gets progressively more dramatic. NEWTOWN PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Newtown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania Anthem: Built on the Rock arr. Todd Kendall Todd Kendall s arrangement of the hymn, Built on the Rock uses the traditional tune associated with hymn. The hymn tune, titled Kirken (Danish for Church), is a traditional Danish hymn from the mid 1800 s. Despite the dark feeling of the C Minor arrangement, the hymn s message is one of joyful praise, singing Now may we gather with our King, even in the lowliest dwelling. Built on the rock the church does stand, even when steeples are falling; Crumbled have spires in every land, bells still are chiming and calling; Calling the young and old to rest, but above all the soul distressed, Longing for life everlasting. We are God s house of living stones, built for his own habitation; He through baptismal grace us owns, heirs of His wondrous salvation; Where two or three his name to tell, yet He would deign with them to dwell With all His grace and His favor. Now may we gather with our King, even in the lowliest dwelling; Praises to Him we there may bring, His wondrous mercy foretelling; Jesus to us His grace accords, spirit and life are all His words, His truth does hallow the temple. Amen! Offertory: Sarabande from French Suite No. 5, J.S. Bach The six French Suites of J.S. Bach are settings of dance music for Harpsichord or Clavichord. The title French Suites is not of Bach s own choosing and the title was not used until well after the composer s death. It is said that this set of Suites shows off a style of writing becoming popular in the late Baroque called Style Galant. The style is noted for a rejection of the contrapuntal complexity of the Baroque, styles for which Bach is best known. Rather, the Galant Style displays a more simple texture and a focus on song-like melodic lines. I WAS GLAD WHEN THEY SAID TO ME, LET US GO INTO THE HOUSE OF THE LORD Psalm 122:1

Blockages in these arteries are a leading cause of stroke. We are pleased to host this Life Line Screening event on Monday, November 28 at Newtown Presbyterian Church. Register for a Wellness Package which includes four vascular tests and osteoporosis screening from $149 ($139 with our member discount). All five screenings take minutes to complete.
