1 * Kyrie October 29, 2017 Reformation and Stewardship Sunday 9:00 a.m. Gathering (Leader, People) The Lord be with you. And also with you. Our help comes in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth. All praise, honor, and glory be unto God, now and forevermore. This is the day which the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it. Moment for Mission Deacons Thanksgiving Baskets Grief Share Surviving the Holidays Prelude I Am His Child Moses Hogan Haydon Massengill, Soloist Time with Children Call to Worship (Leader, People) Leader: Blessed be the name of the Lord! People: From the rising of the sun to its setting, the name of the Lord is to be praised. Leader: The Lord is high above all nations; God s glory is above the heavens. People: Yet God lifts up the lowly and humble in heart. Leader: Then let us look to the Lord and be glad! People: We will rejoice and give thanks for God s mighty works. Leader: Let us worship God! * Hymn No. 716 God, Whose Giving Knows No Ending * Call to Confession * Prayer of Confession (Unison) Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed--by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not always loved you with our whole heart; we have not always loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. (Silent Prayer) Let the whole church say Amen * Assurance of Pardon (Leader, People) Friends, believe in the good news In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Rest in the assurance of God s grace, and be at peace. Amen * Gloria Patri Hymn No. 581 Prayer for Illumination First Reading Romans 12: 3-8 NT page 162 Psalm 90: Lord, you have been our refuge from one generation to another 2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or the land and the earth were born, from age to age you are God. 3 You turn us back to the dust and say, Turn back, O children of earth 4 For a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when it is past and like a watch in the night; 5 you sweep them away like a dream, they fade away suddenly like the grass: 6 in the morning it is green and flourishes; in the evening it is dried up and withered. 7 For we are consumed by your justice; we are afraid because of your indignation; 8 Our iniquities you have set before you, and our secret sins in the light of your countenance. 9 When you are angry, all our days are gone; we bring our years to an end like a sigh.

2 10 The span of our life is seventy years, perhaps in strength even eighty; yet the sum of them is but labor and sorrow, for they pass away quickly and we are gone. 11 Who regards the power of your wrath? Who rightly fears your indignation? 12So teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts to wisdom. 13 Return O Lord; how long will you tarry? Be gracious to your servants. 14 Satisfy us by your steadfast love in the morning; so shall we rejoice and be glad all our days. 15 Make us glad as many days as you afflicted us and as many years as we suffered adversity. 16 Show your servants your works, and your splendor to their children. 17 May the graciousness of the Lord our God be upon us; prosper the works of our hands; prosper our handiwork. 3 Music Notes for October 29 Prelude: I am His Child by Moses Hogan - Haydon Massengill, Soloist Moses Hogan is primarily regarded as an arranger of Spirituals and is credited with advancing the American choral spiritual tradition to a professional level. I Am His Child is however, a completely original work with both words and music written by Hogan. He writes a lovely melodic line supported by rich harmonic writing in the piano. The work offers the moving and relevant sentiment that we are all children of God and should respect one another as such. Anthem: O How Amiable This Vaughan Williams setting of the 84th and 90th Psalms was originally written for The Abinger Pageant which took place in July of The Pageant was to benefit the Abinger Church Preservation Fund and included this anthem as well as a number of other folk song and dance arrangements by the composer written for the event. The works title page specifies the Anthem for the Dedication of a Church and is offered today as we rededicate our own gifts and talents to the continued good work of Newtown Presbyterian Church. Offertory: God, Whose Giving Knows No Ending arr. Charles Callahan A contemporary of Vaughan Williams, composer C.H.H. Parry s hymn tune Rustington was first published in the Westminster Abbey Hymn Book of 1897 with the text Praise the Rock of Our Salvation. In our Glory to God Hymnal, the tune is used on page 484 as a Baptismal Hymn while the stewardship text God, Whose Giving Knows No Ending is set with the Sacred Harp tune Beach Spring on page 716. Postlude: Pièce d Orgue BWV 572 J.S. Bach Wishing to master the French style, Bach turns to the works of French Organist Nicholas de Grigny. De Grigny s organ composition, along with the works of Couperin, are considered to be the pinnacle of the French Baroque tradition of Organ Playing. This morning, we will hear the central chorale-like portion of this work as we conclude our service of worship. A special thank you to the volunteers who staffed the reception table and canteen; I couldn t run the drive without you. The next drive is in February. Peg Mitchell A Special Invitation from Griefshare - SURVIVING THE HOLIDAYS: Wondering how you will survive the weeks surrounding Thanksgiving and Christmas without your loved one? Are you dreading the holidays, knowing that everything has changed and that happy memories from the past cannot be recreated? Griefshare s SURVIVING THE HOLIDAYS seminar is especially for people who are grieving a loved one s death. We ll offer ideas to help you deal with the emotions you ll face during the holidays, consider what to do about traditions and other coming changes, provide tips for surviving social events, and help you discover hope for your future. All are welcome to join us on TODAY at 11:00 a.m. in Room 211. Outreach Sunday, November 5: The Outreach Committee has designated Sunday, November 5 th, as Outreach Sunday, and we hope you will be able to help out. Sign-up sheets and lists of items to be donated are posted on the Outreach take it-bring-it board in the reception room. Items are to be returned to the Outreach closet in the reception room by Saturday, November 4 th. Several projects are planned: Aid for Friends make breakfast bags; Broad Street Ministries collect and pack supplies; Bucks Villa rake leaves; First Family Cookies collect and pack cookies; Pickering Manor cooking and visitation; Race Track Chaplaincy/Backstretch collect and pack supplies. If you are able to work that Sunday, please gather in Ettenger Hall at 12:00 pm for most activities (lunch provided). The Pickering Manor project will probably start around 2:00 pm. Thank you for your support. First Sunday Meals/Aiding Our Children: Thank you for all you do for the families living in motels in Lower Bucks County who are considered homeless. Right now we have approximately 24 families (75 adults and children) living in motels in Bristol, Bensalem, and Fairless Hills. They are truly the working poor; they often have to make a decision between housing and meals. By contributing food, you are helping to feed these families. Our next food delivery is November 5. Since cooking is minimal, they can use cereal, canned pasta, soup, peanut butter and jelly, canned fruits and vegetables, and tuna. You may drop off food that Sunday or in the Reception Room in the First Sunday Meals bins anytime. Thank you very much for your continued support and generosity. Any questions, please contact Elaine Warren at or (prettybird50@yahoo.com). SAVE THE DATE!! A Christmas Carol is less than a month away! Mark your calendars for November 17, 18 and 19. Tickets will go on sale between services starting next Sunday. We need long evening gloves, fans and wigs. We need help with simple alterations hemming pants and skirts and adding Velcro; and making "buckles" from a cardboard pattern (supplied), and spray painting them. Thank you in advance. Call Sandy at Help Wanted: FOR CHILI LUNCHEON on December 2 nd - NO PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY. The Historic Church Committee needs your help for the Chili Luncheon, Dec. 2. Sign-up sheets are posted on the Historic Church bulletin board in the hallway by the reception room. Various jobs are available, please sign-up today to help us guarantee another successful Chili Luncheon. Yoga: The next session of Yoga will begin on Wednesday, November 1 and go through December 13, 6:30 7:30 p.m., in Ettenger Hall. Session fee is $70 for a 6 week session. Drop-ins are always welcome for $15. Students $10. No session on 11/22. Please bring a yoga mat, beach towel and water (exercise blocks and a strap are helpful). Proceeds benefit the ongoing restoration of the Historic Church cemetery. Contact Shelda Thorburn with any questions at McCaffrey Receipts: THOSE LITTLE PIECES OF PAPER, called McCaffrey's receipts, really do add up. Averaging 360 to 390 receipts per month, we are already ahead of all of last year in dollar support of our Historic Church. Thank you - and keep on eating and sharing. Greeting Card Basket: A basket holding all kinds of greeting cards for anyone to take is in Ettenger Hall. They are organized by type. Feel free to look through the cards and help yourself whenever you wish! REMINDER: Please call the church office ( ) if you would like to set-up a table in Ettenger Hall for sales or the Reception room for sign-ups before/after worship on Sundays.

5 Youth News Mission Trip Info Meeting Today: Ettenger Hall, 4pm. Parents and youth will be meeting at 4pm this afternoon to talk about our upcoming Mission Trips for both Jr. High and High School. We ll be reviewing the process as well as some upcoming fundraisers to help support our costs. Please let Pastor Laura if you are unable to attend, but still interested in participating. Registration forms and deposits have been coming in, so be sure to attend and bring your forms to make sure you re added to the list! Youth Group Movie Night, Part 2! Ettenger Hall, 5pm to 7pm. Since our movie night at the Historic Church was cut short by some technical difficulties, we will be watching a spooky Halloween movie tonight as well as talking about some of those things that spook us out the most! Popcorn will be provided, but please bring a favorite Halloween treat to share and $5.00 for dinner. Next Sunday: Outreach Sunday Event. Ettenger Hall, 12pm - 3pm. Instead of our evening gathering, we will be participating in the church s Outreach Sunday event where there will be a variety of mission projects for us to help with. This is a great opportunity for service hours as well as a time to connect with others in the church and community to bring some much-needed help to those who are most in need. We ll have lunch first and then split off into various projects including a visit to Pickering Manor down the street to help bake with and visit the residents.
