Let us worship God. * Hymn No. 182 I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say * Call to Confession * Prayer of Confession (Unison) God our Redeemer, we confess that we are people of ashes and dust. We join the parade and shout hosanna, then deny our Lord in his hour of need. We wave the palms and sing praise, then hand our Savior over to die. Forgive us, God of grace, Our lives are in your hand. Deliver us from evil. Save us, by your steadfast love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Silent Prayer) Let the whole church say Amen! * Kyrie

Hear my prayer, for unto thee all flesh shall come. II. Kyrie Lord, have mercy, Christ, have mercy, Lord, have mercy. III. Domine Jesu Christe Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory, liberate the souls of all the faithful departed from the pains of hell and from the deep pit; deliver them from the lion s mouth; let not hell swallow them up, let them not fall into darkness: but let Michael, the holy standard-bearer, bring them into the holy light, which once thou promised to Abraham and to his seed. Maurice Duruflé

7 Music Notes for March 25 Prelude: Chorale and Fugue from Organ Sonata No. 6 (1844) Felix Mendelssohn ( ) The sixth organ sonata of Felix Mendelssohn is essentially a theme and variations on the chorale Vater unser im Himmelreich (Our Father in Heaven), the German choral setting of the Lord s Prayer. The fugue is built on the melodic outline of the first phrase of the chorale. Cantata: Requiem (1948) Maurice Duruflé ( ) This Requiem completed in 1947, is composed entirely on the Gregorian themes of the Mass for the Dead. Sometimes the musical text has been respected in full, the [Organ] intervening only to sustain or to comment on it; sometimes I was simply inspired by it or sometimes removed myself from it altogether; for example, in certain developments suggested by the Latin text, namely in the Domine Jesu Christe, the Sanctus, and the Libera. Generally speaking, I tried to get the particular style of the Gregorian themes firmly set in my mind. I also endeavored to reconcile as much as possible the Gregorian rhythm, as has been established by the Benedictines of Solennes, with the demands of modern metrical notation. The rigidness of the latter, with its strong beats and weak beats recurring at regular intervals, is hardly compatible with the variety and fluidity of the Gregorian line, which is only a succession of rises and falls. The strong beats had to lose their dominant character in order to take on the same intensity as the weak beats in such a way that the rhythmic Gregorian accent of the tonic Latin accent could be placed freely on any beat of our modern tempo. This Requiem is not an ethereal work which sings the detachment from earthly worries. It reflects, in the immutable form of the Christian prayer, the agony of man faced with the mystery of his ultimate end. It is often dramatic, or filled with resignation, or hope or terror, just as the words of the Scripture themselves which are used in the liturgy. It tends to translate human feelings before their terrifying, unexplainable or consoling destiny. The Mass includes the nine parts of the Mass of the Dead: the Introit, Kyrie, Domine Jesu Christe, Sanctus, Pie Jesu, Agnus Dei, Lux aeterna, Libera me, and finally In Paradisum, the ultimate answer of Faith to all the questions, by the flight of the soul to Paradise. Maurice Duruflé Offertory: Prière (1919) Camille Saint-Saëns ( ) Prayer for Cello and Organ is described as having a catchy tune. The ABA form begins with a lyric beginning, leading to a more expressive central section and concluding with the softer opening material. The piece is written for a two manual instrument like the Keats here at NPC. Postlude: Toccata in F Major, BWV 540 (1714) J.S. Bach ( ) We end this morning s worship with a Toccata by J.S. Bach. The work begins with a lengthy pedal solo leading to a canonic theme passed between the hands and feet. The work s upbeat 3/8 time signature lends the feel of a dance movement but extended length of the work would seem to discount its intent for such a piece.

8 Music Notes Newtown Presbyterian Church - Keats Organ Today, we feature our Keats Organ as a central component of worship. The organ has a history reaching back to the 1930 s, when an Estey pipe organ was purchased for the chapel which was located on the site of our current sanctuary. When the chapel was demolished for construction of our current sanctuary, the Estey organ was enlarged, adding two ranks of pipes and the Deagan Chimes, bringing the total to 9 stops, 580 pipes and 20 bells. By 1970 the old Estey organ s condition had deteriorated to the point that a new organ was needed. The Keates Organ Company of Acton, Canada was hired to build a new instrument for this sanctuary. Three ranks of pipes and the chimes from the Estey organ were incorporated into the new instrument to perpetuate the original memorial. The two manual Keates which you are hearing and seeing this morning was dedicated on May 21, 1972 and was dedicated in recital by Joan Lippincott, head of the Organ Department at Westminster Choir College. In 1995 the organ again underwent minor renovation, and in 2011, 32 levels of digital memory were added to the instrument. The instrument you see this morning is a two manual instrument with electronic action and more than 30 ranks of pipes. The instrument usually resides in a recessed portion of the chancel to the rear of the Lectern. The console has been moved this week with support of Crossan Savage Organ Company to a front and center position as a feature of our worship today. You are invited to take advantage of this rare opportunity to see the instrument after worship today. Hehsun and Jason will be happy to show you how our Keats Organ works. We do ask that you not touch the instrument without supervision of the organist as accidental changes to registration would create significant challenges during worship.

Ushers: 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., Team I: Doug Witschen, Captain, Lynn Domasinsky, Tom Domasinsky, Dennis Gracey, Jeanine Gracey, Gary Thau, Jeanne Witschen 11:00 a.m., Team H: Alan Thress, Captain, Pam Allen, Allen Frakes, Tom Nyquist, Marilyn Ream, Ron Thorburn, Elaine Thress Welcome Desk: If you are visiting Newtown Presbyterian Church, please stop by our Welcome Desk, which is located in the parlor next to the pulpit. You will find information about our church and Membership Committee representative, Linda Edmiston, to answer any questions. We look forward to meeting you. Coffee Hour: All are welcome for light refreshments in Ettenger Hall each Sunday after the 9:00 a.m. service. Come meet and greet your fellow NPC members and guests. Worship Bags: Worship bags are available for children in Kindergarten to Third grade. Please return the bags at the conclusion of the service so they can be replenished for reuse. See Janet Eshleman or an usher to get a bag. Easter Meals: The Deacons are once again preparing for their Easter Meals baskets and during coffee hour will be in Ettenger Hall for the next two Sundays accepting donations. Thank you in advance for your thoughtful consideration of this meaningful and important mission! First Sunday Meals/Aiding Our Children: Thank you for all you do for the families living in motels in Lower Bucks County who are considered homeless. Right now we have 28 families (80 adults and children) living in motels in Bristol, Bensalem, and Fairless Hills. They are truly the working poor; they often have to make a decision between housing and meals. By contributing food, you are helping to feed these families. Because of Easter falling on the first Sunday (our families will be recipients of the Easter Meals), our next food delivery is April 8. Since cooking is minimal, they can use tuna, canned pasta, soup, canned fruits and vegetables. You may drop off food that Sunday or in the Reception Room in the First Sunday Meals bins anytime. Thank you very much for your continued support and generosity. Any questions, please contact Elaine Warren at or prettybird50@yahoo.com.

11 Clothing Donations: Broad Street Ministry is in dire need of clothes! The clothing closet inventory is critically low of basically everything, in particular men s pants and jeans, hoodies, coats and shoes. If you know of anyone who is getting a jump start on spring cleaning, and has clothes to donate, please send them our way! Leave them in the Outreach clothing closet, and we will transport donations to Broad Street. Check out the flyer on the Outreach bulletin board for more information. Mindfulness, Meditation and More: With all the snow, it might be helpful to re-focus and refresh with our group. We will be meeting the 2 nd and 4 th Mondays of the month in Room 211 as we learn how to bring Mindfulness into every moment. Contact Deb Cyb if you have any questions. Yoga: The current session of yoga began on Wednesday, March 14 and goes through April 18, 6:30 7:30 p.m., Ettenger Hall. Session fee is $65 for a 6 week session. Drop-ins are always welcome for $15. Students $10. Please bring a yoga mat, beach towel and water. Proceeds benefit the ongoing restoration of the Historic Church cemetery. Contact Shelda Thorburn with any questions at Greeting Card Basket: A basket holding all kinds of greeting cards for anyone to take is in Ettenger Hall. They are organized by type. Feel free to look through the cards and help yourself whenever you wish! The McCaffrey 1% Receipt Program continues to move forward with your wonderful support. It has recently come to our attention, however, that in order for the receipts to be counted they cannot be older than three months. So we would appreciate your promptness in submitting your receipts and do know of our gratitude for your continued support of our Historic Church through this program. Thank you. What Can You Do? Have any new items you don t need, any gifts you were given that don t work for you, or are you able to contribute items or services from your own business or from friends or family? If you answered yes to any of those questions, please consider donating items or monetary contributions as raffle prizes for this year s Strawberry Festival. Please let us hear from you soon by contacting: Wanda Kuchinsky at , wjkuchinsky@verizon.net or Judy Kauffman at , judy_kauffman@yahoo.com.
