2 In the Pulpit: Assisting: * Please stand as you are able Rev. Laura Ferguson Rev. Sam Massengill Lynn Domasinsky NEWTOWN PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Newtown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania Music for April 22 Prelude: Kyrie Eleison, Charles Callahan Organist and composer, Dr. Charles Callahan is a graduate of The Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. He has over a hundred published works and a dozen recordings to his credit. This simple arrangement of the Kyrie is from a setting titled Three Gregorian Reflections. Anthem: Lord, Thou Hast Searched Me (Psalm 139) - Howard Helvey Howard Helvey combines John Milton s paraphrase of Psalm 139 with the early American tune, Tender Thought. The tune first appeared in print in Kentucky Harmony in 1816; a shape note tune book compiled by Ananias Davisson. This collection is considered to be the first Southern shape-note tune book. Offertory: Lead, Kindly Light, arr. Dale Wood The hymn tune Lux Benigna by English Clergyman and musician, John Dykes, was composed in 1883 to accompany the hymn text, Lead, Kindly Light. The text is from the poem The Pillar and the Cloud by John Henry Newman which begins, Lead, Kindly Light, amid the encircling gloom, Lead Thou me on! The night is dark, and I am far from home - Lead Thou me on! Keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to see the distant scene, - one step enough for me. Postlude: All Glory, Laud, and Honor, arr. Dan Miller Dan Miller s triumphant setting of the beloved hymn, All Glory, Laud, and Honor is a beautiful way to end an Eastertide service. Based on the familiar tune, the text known by our congregation is actually based on a Latin hymn titled Gloria, laud et honor, written around the 820 by Theodulph of Orléans. The tune we know was not composed until the midsixteenth century and is called St. Theodulph. I WAS GLAD WHEN THEY SAID TO ME, LET US GO INTO THE HOUSE OF THE LORD Psalm 122:1
