1 March 4, 2018 Third Sunday in Lent 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. Gathering (Leader, People) The Lord be with you. And also with you. Our help comes in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth. All praise, honor, and glory be unto God, now and forevermore. This is the day which the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it. Moment for Mission Easter Meals Prelude O Savior of the World Arthur Somervell Call to Worship (Leader, People) The Lord is merciful and gracious, Slow to anger and abounding in love. The law of the Lord revives the soul; The word of God makes the simple wise. Let us worship God! * Hymn No. 165 The Glory of These Forty Days * Call to Confession * Prayer of Confession (Unison) God our Redeemer, we confess that we are people of ashes and dust. You gave us your law to guide us, but we seek the wisdom of the world. You made us a temple of living stones, but we dishonor the body of Christ. Forgive us, God of grace. Instruct us in our foolishness and strengthen us in our weakness so that we may be holy and whole; through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Silent Prayer) Let the whole church say Amen! * Kyrie * Assurance of Pardon (Leader, People) Friends, believe in the good news In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Rest in the assurance of God s grace, and be at peace. Amen. * Gloria Patri Hymn No. 581 Prayer for Illumination First Reading Hebrews 10:19-25 NT Page 224 Psalm 19 (Refrain) 1 The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims his handiwork. 2 Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night declares knowledge. 3 There is no speech, nor are there words; their voice is not heard; 4 yet their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens he has set a tent for the sun, 5 which comes out like a bridegroom from his wedding canopy, and like a strong man runs its course with joy. 6 Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them; and nothing is hid from its heat. 7 The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the decrees of the Lord are sure, making wise the simple; 8 the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is clear, enlightening the eyes; 9 the fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever; the ordinances of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. 10 More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey, and drippings of the honeycomb. 11 Moreover by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward. 12 But who can detect their errors? Clear me from hidden faults. 13 Keep back your servant also from the insolent; do not let them have dominion over me. Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression. 14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. (Refrain)

3 Music for March 4 Prelude: O Savior of the World - Arthur Somervell Settings of the Salvator Mundi are fairly common from the Renaissance through the 20th century. The most well-known being the five voice motet of Thomas Tallis. The Latin text translates as O Savior of the world, save us, who by thy cross and precious blood has redeemed us. Come to our rescue, we beseech thee, our God." Anthem: For I Know the Plans I Have for You - David Schwoebel David Schwoebel serves as the Minister of Music and Composer in Residence at Derbyshire Baptist Church in Richmond, VA. David administers a comprehensive music ministry of six choral organizations, four hand bell choirs and a 32-piece chamber orchestra. Offertory: Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ - J.S. Bach From the Orgelbüchlein (Little Organ Book) by J.S. Bach. Originally, Bach intended it the work to contain 164 chorale preludes, enough to span the entire liturgical year. Ultimately, the collection containing only 46 pieces but represent the height of the Chorale Prelude form. Postlude: Fugue in E minor - J.S. Bach From the collection known as Eight Short Preludes and Fugues. The works are noted both for their brevity and for their simplicity of style. Because of this uncharacteristic style, it has recently been recently suggested that the collection was actually written by one of Bach s students; possibly Johann Krebs. Our Staff Rev. If you are in a room in the church on the morning of March 11 that has a clock, please take a minute and change it! For the past 20+ years the Semmels, Jim and Marilyn, have been doing this task, and they have officially retired from this responsibility! Our thanks to them is immeasurable, and no one will be able to replace them in this task! Thank you, Jim and Marilyn, for all you have done to make time change a smooth operation! We can only hope that many of us can step up to help get this accomplished! Thank you!!! Progressive Dinner - March 10 th Looking for a fun evening with friends? Want to make new friends and to get to know your fellow church members better? Please join us as we share appetizers (5:30-7) and dinner (7:15-8:45) in small groups at individual homes, and then meet together at the church to enjoy dessert (9-10). We encourage all adults to join us - no need to host and you are welcome to participate even if you can only join in for part of the evening. Every year we have a great mix of young and old, couples and singles for a great time of food and drink and building friendships beyond rushing past each other on a Sunday morning. Sign up after the 9 a.m. service by this Sunday, March 4 th or contact Kristen Lynch (klync@mail.med.upenn.edu) with questions or to sign up. Aid for Friends Needs Help: We are meeting this Wednesday at 8:00 a.m. in the church kitchen to assemble meals for shut-ins. We are in need of people for our assembly line. Please join us if you are free. Red Cross Blood Drive: Thanks to all our faithful donors (and to the six first time donors) who donated at our February blood drive. We collected 66 pints of blood. A special thanks to our volunteers. The drive would not be possible without you. Our next drive is in June. Peg Mitchell McCaffrey's receipt program: A little support here, a little support over there, and still more support from somewhere else all adds up to a winner. Just as the McCaffrey's receipt program is a winner for our Historic Church because of you. Thank you for being a part of the team supporting our Historic Church. Yoga: The next session of yoga will begin on Wednesday, March 7 and go through April 11, 6:30 7:30 p.m., Ettenger Hall. Session fee is $65 for a 6 week session. Drop-ins are always welcome for $15.
