1 May 28, 2017 Ascension of the Lord 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. Gathering Music Welcome and Announcements Moment for Mission Prelude GATHERING Call to Worship (Leader, People) The Lord is risen! Alleluia! Alleluia! The Lord is risen indeed! Why do you look up toward the heaven? Christ has risen; Christ will come again. Let us worship God. Hymn Sing * Hymn No. 265 Jesus Shall Reign Blood Drive * Call to Confession * Prayer of Confession (Unison) Living God, we confess that we look for the living among the dead. You have offered us your Word; still we trust in worldly truths. You have offered us eternal life; still we cling to temporary things. Forgive us; give us new life! Show us the glory of your presence and the gift of your promise: the life that death cannot destroy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Silent Prayer) Let the whole church say Amen! * Assurance of Pardon (Leader, People) Friends, believe in the good news In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Rest in the assurance of God s grace, and be at peace. Amen. * Gloria Patri Hymn No. 581 THE WORD First Reading Psalm 27:1-8 OT Page 503 Anthem Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing Leo Nestor Second Reading John 17:1-11 NT Page 111 Prayer for Illumination Sermon... that we may be one Rev. 2 * Charge and Benediction SENDING Postlude We Thank Thee, O God, from Cantata no 29 J. S. Bach In the Pulpit: Assisting: We invite you to remain seated for the final act of worship, the postlude. The pastors look forward to greeting you following worship. * Please stand as you are able ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Rev. Sam Massengill Rev. Laura Ferguson Dwight Davis Music for Sunday, May 28 Anthem: Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing, Leo Nestor The choir s program season comes to a close next week as we open our Historic Church for the summer. We conclude our year in the Chancellor Street sanctuary with a glorious setting of the hymn Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing. This arrangement features a beautiful harmonization of the hymn sung by the choir and is supported by a virtuosic accompaniment that makes full use of our Keats Organ. Arranged by American Composer Leo Nestor, this setting is the finale of a larger work titled American Triptych. Offertory: Hymn to Joy, arr. McChesney The finale of Beethoven s Symphony No. 9 sets the 1785 poem An die Freude in one of the most beloved works in the history of western music. Schiller s poem, of course, is not the same text we use in our hymn of adoration Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee (Glory to God Hymnal no. 611). This text was written in 1907 by a Presbyterian Minister, Henry van Dyke with the Beethoven tune in mind. The original Schiller poem ends with the text: You millions, I embrace you. This kiss is for the whole world! Brothers, above the starry canopy There must a loving father abide. Do you fall in worship, you millions? World, do you know your creator? Seek him in the heavens; Above the stars must he dwell. Postlude: We Thank Thee, O God, from Cantata no 29, J. S. Bach The Cantata Wir danken dir, Gott, wir danken dir (We thank thee, God, we thank thee) was composed in 1731 for the inauguration of the new town council and was premiered on August 27 of that year. The virtuosic Sinfonia from this cantata concludes our worship this morning.
