Fed by the Holy Spirit, we nurture our faith through private prayer, sacraments and liturgy, through life-long learning and teaching of Gospel values, and through love and support of each other. Empowered by the same Spirit, we live our faith in action through ministries of service, social justice, evangelization and witness, because all people are called to one and the same goal: unity with God, now and forever. Amen. Reconciliation Available Saturdays at 4:00 PM or by appointment. During Advent and Lent Saturday Reconciliation will begin at 3:00 PM. Communal Services are also scheduled during Advent and Lent at the Deanery Church. Marriage Diocesan policy requires 6 months preparation time. Contact parish office for appointment. RCIA RCIA is a process for fully initiating adults into the Catholic faith. It is for those who have never been baptized, or were baptized and/or raised in another Christian denomination and are now interested in becoming Catholic. This process is also for Baptized Catholics who never completed their initiation through the sacraments of Eucharist and/or Confirmation. If interested, please contact the parish office at Eucharist for the Homebound If you or a member of your family cannot attend Mass because of illness or disability, a Minister of Care will bring Communion to you. Call the parish office to make arrangements. Page 2

3 Readings and Resources Sunday Reflection PROMISES Today s liturgy is full of promises. The reading from Genesis promises a final triumph over the power of sin and a return to a new creation. The reading from Second Corinthians promises that all who follow Christ will have to struggle. It also promises, however, that we can persevere if we but recognize that Christ is within us, renewing us daily, and giving us the courage and the strength we need to endure. The Gospel promises that doing God s will makes us family with Jesus, who forgives all sin and triumphs over evil. Today might be a good day for us to make some promises as well. We can promise to stop kidding ourselves about our own tendencies to selfishness and sin. We can promise ourselves to believe really believe that while we are not sinless, we are forgiven. We can promise ourselves to combat evil and sin by acting as sisters and brothers not only to the Lord, but to one another as well. Our Sanctuary Lamp Our sanctuary lamp is a 7-day candle that is always lit above the tabernacle. If you would like to contribute $20 to the cost of the weekly candle we will print a Thank You in the bulletin. You are also welcome to make the donation in memory of a loved one or loved ones. There are envelopes on the book racks for your donation. Just include a paper that states how you would like your name and/or the names for memorials printed. Names will be printed in the bulletin in the order in which they are received, either in the collection or at the office. Our Sanctuary Lamp this week is lit through the generosity of: Erminia Acevedo In memory of: Tomas, Bernando, and Sara Acevedo Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Treasures From Our Tradition The cathedral is a treasure in a diocese and in our tradition. It is not simply a big church, as some say; some parish churches are larger. What makes a cathedral is the presence of the chair, called a cathedra (Latin for seat) reserved for the bishop. There are many instances in our country of a local church (diocese) outgrowing a cathedral. In Baltimore and St. Louis, the former cathedrals are historic treasures in the heart of the old city, but new and larger structures now function as the seat of the bishop. When a bishop dies or retires, it is said that the seat is vacant, and when the new bishop is installed, the central ritual is the moment when the decree of the Holy Father is read and the new bishop is escorted to the cathedra. No one but the bishop sits in the cathedra during a ritual, but in Los Angeles the cathedra in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels is accessible, and no one seems to mind when a visitor tries the cathedra out for the bishop s point of view. 7 Knights of Columbus Men: Are You Ready to Accept the Challenge? Our communities need strong Catholic men to answer the call to lead with faith, protect our families, serve others and defend our values. For over 135 years, Knights of Columbus have done exactly that, standing up for Church, serving the least among us, and strengthening our parishes and families. Eligible Catholic men can now join the Knights of Columbus online in a simple, streamlined process. As a member, you join a worldwide community of nearly 2,000,000 men, including 70,000 here in Illinois, who stand together. Men have a duty to lead, protect, serve and defend. The world needs more committed, unified Catholic men to answer the call. Will you answer? Visit kofc.org/joinus to learn more about the many benefits of membership in the Knights of Columbus. Father John Hornicak has experienced some medical problems. To allow him time to recover, Bishop Conlon has appointed Fr. Bob Hoffenkamp as temporary administrator of Holy Ghost Parish. Thank you for your continued prayers for Fr. John. Page 7

8 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal Pledge Report Our parish s goal for the 2018 CMAA is $ 53,300. Our hope is that every parishioner will contribute as Partners in Caring, as every gift-large and small makes a difference. If we raise more than our goal, 70% of the amount paid over goal will be returned to us for our use. This is an amazing opportunity for our parish! Please prayerfully reflect on your pledge to this year s CMAA. In-pew envelopes are still available in the church, or you can make a gift online at jolietdioceseappeal.org. Here are the results as of May 20, 2018 PARISH GOAL: $53,300 AMOUNT PLEDGED: $56,450 AMOUNT PAID: $32,210 REMAINING BALANCE: $23,240 DONOR COUNT: 265 If you have not had a chance to participate in the Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA) this year, there is still time. A mailing will be arriving in homes shortly. As your pastor, I encourage you to prayerfully reflect on God s gifts to you and to give a gift to the CMAA. Participation is the key to a successful appeal and a chance for our parish to receive a parish rebate, too. Every gift helps! If you do not receive this mailing and would like to make a gift to the CMAA, please call the Diocese of Joliet Development Office at Or, if you wish to make your gift online, please visit Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, This year, Father s Day is celebrated on June 17. There will be a special collection taken at Masses on June to care for our infirmed and senior priests. The Fund for Diocesan Infirmed and Elderly Priests is a special way for the people of the Diocese of Joliet to express their concern for the welfare of those who have dedicated their lives in service to our pastoral care. The money in this fund goes toward priests who need help with extraordinary medical expenses or suffer a catastrophic illness. It also provides for the care of the St. John Vianney Villa, home to several senior priests in the Diocese of Joliet. Prayerfully consider making a donation to help our aged and sick priests as an expression of appreciation for all they have done in exemplifying Christ s mercy, through their spiritual guidance and celebration of the sacraments. On behalf of all the active and senior priests of the diocese, I am grateful for your prayers and for your generous support of the Father s Day Collection for our aged and infirm diocesan priests. Please be assured of my prayers for you. Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon Bishop of Joliet Page 8

(Return to parish office by June 15. ) Couple (with first names, please) Address City Zip Phone News from February and March vigils in Wood Dale: During the months of February and March, we estimate that 120 babies were killed while in their mother's wombs at Advantage Health Care in Wood Dale, 203 E. Irving Park Rd. One of the fathers sat in his car and wept while his child was being killed inside. He told a sidewalk counselor that they have 3 kids at home. The counselor even offered to adopt his child. He would not listen to any of our pleas or offers of help. Pray for his healing and the healing of this whole family. Abortion greatly affects men as well as women. If you know a man or woman hurt form abortion, let them know that they are not alone and there is hope and healing. Suggest they see is specifically for men. hopeafterabortion.com/?gclid=eaiaiqobchmiyyvfhntt2giveirpch3anahmeaayasaaegkkevd_bwe is specifically for women. However, 4 women chose LIFE in those two very cold months! One couple pulled into the lot and sat arguing in the car for a while. Then they just left! Three others left before the abortionist showed up. We continue to reach out with compassion and God's love to all of the employees at the clinic. Dr. Vinod K. Goyal, the owner and operator of the Wood Dale and 2 other suburban and 1 Chicago abortion mill. NorthWest Families for Life - Giving women a real choice and babies a realchance. Our mission is to call to action pro-life individuals for prayer and peaceful vigils to end abortion. The nurses often come out to have a smoke just after the abortions are done, while the women are in recovery. Recently, I called out to two of them with information about Abby Johnson's group The older woman, whom I've interacted with before, responded, "Mind your own business." I informed her that this IS my business. Then I let her know that caring about her is part of my business. After brushing me off, she herded the younger employee inside, but not before I told them they were both beautiful daughters of God. Please pray their hearts will be touched. Page 9
