Amen. Sacramental Information Baptism Takes place on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. Before scheduling your child s Baptism, you must attend a preparation class. Call the parish office to make arrangements. First Eucharist Celebrated each spring, available to youth who have completed required preparation. First Reconciliation Celebrated each spring, available to youth who have completed required preparation. Confirmation Celebrated each year and available to youth who have completed required preparation. Reconciliation Available Saturdays at 4:00 PM or by appointment. During Advent and Lent Saturday Reconciliation will begin at 3:00 PM. Communal Services are also scheduled during Advent and Lent. Marriage Diocesan policy requires 6 months preparation time. Contact parish office for appointment. RCIA RCIA is a process for fully initiating adults into the Catholic faith. It is for those who have never been baptized, or were baptized and/or raised in another Christian denomination and are now interested in becoming Catholic. This process is also for Baptized Catholics who never completed their initiation through the sacraments of Eucharist and/or Confirmation. If interested, please contact the parish office at Eucharist for the Homebound If you or a member of your family cannot attend Mass because of illness or disability, a Minister of Care will bring Communion to you. 3 Readings and Resources Sunday Reflection COMMUNAL RESPONSIBILITY The people of God forgot the covenant and flouted God s laws. They did not listen to the prophets among them, who spoke for God in warning them. Prophets are sent from God to remind us why we are here, but they are often, even in our own time, mocked, disregarded, and mistreated rather than thanked and listened to. The book of Chronicles tells the results of these sins: the destruction of the temple and all of Jerusalem, murder, mayhem, and finally exile to a foreign land. Why are these stories in the Bible? Just to inform us of what happened to our ancient forebears? What good would that be unless there were a message and a warning for us as well? Are we people who follow the teachings of God, who obey the words of Christ in the second covenant in his blood? Or do we continue to wreak works of darkness and violence? We are reminded by these readings that we will be judged as a people, not just as individuals Our Sanctuary Lamp Our sanctuary lamp is a 7-day candle that is always lit above the tabernacle. If you would like to contribute $20 to the cost of the weekly candle we will print a Thank You in the bulletin. You are also welcome to make the donation in memory of a loved one or loved ones. There are envelopes on the book racks for your donation. Just include a paper that states how you would like your name and/or the names for memorials printed. Names will be printed in the bulletin in the order in which they are received, either in the collection or at the office. Treasures From Our Tradition Year B of the Lectionary has the Letter to the Ephesians today. Ephesus, today in Turkey, was in the first century a great Greek city, the center for the worship of Diana, the goddess of the hunt. It was a vast city even by modern standards, having nearly half a million people in the time of Paul. Yet that was a time of economic recession and moral decay. No wonder Saint Paul stayed here the longest. It gave him an enormous and religiously curious audience. His preaching stirred up the artisans who depended on the pilgrims who came to honor (and buy mementos of) seventeen gods and goddesses enshrined in the city s temples. You can still see the open-air theater where Paul s homily triggered a riot. Paul did have success here, and many conversions among Jews and Gentiles. They seem to have struggled with hope, perhaps because of their suffering from economic woes and isolation. Some old traditions say that the Apostle John lived out his days here, and that the Blessed Mother was cared for by him. There s no biblical basis for this, but it is certain that a small house just outside the city has been treasured by Christians and Muslims for centuries as the last dwelling of Mary. Long ago, the harbor silted up and the city was nearly abandoned, becoming a small village. As is so often the case, that accident of history preserved the ancient city, so that archeologists have been very successful in revealing ancient Christian sites. One such site is the Church of Mary, probably the first church to be dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, and the site of the Council of Ephesus in 431. Today, a visit to Ephesus is one of the most rewarding journeys for any pilgrim. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR OUR MINISTRY Caring Cooks, a sub unit of C.O.R.E., is a Holy Ghost Ministry whose goal is to provide meals to Holy Ghost parishioners/families whom are unable to do meal prep due to a family illness, accident or crisis situation and need short-term assistance with meals. We are looking for volunteers willing to provide, prepare, and deliver meals to parishioners on an as needed basis. The goal is to have enough volunteers so that each cook only needs to provide a meal every month or two. Volunteer sheets are available at the Welcome Desk in the Narthex. Please fill it out and return to any of the Parish offices. If you have any questions about the program, feel free to contact me, Penny Kadlec, or Kad188@aol.com. We truly can make a difference in people s lives with such a simple gesture as a home cooked meal! 7 Visitation Parish Hosts Thursday Evening Masses in Lent Each year during Lent, Visitation Parish in Elmhurst offers a series of Thursday evening Masses, at 7 PM, as an extra opportunity to grow closer to the Lord during this annual season of conversion. The Masses are offered by various priests from the diocese, and this year they focus on a variety of timely themes. Afterwards, everyone is invited into the Parish Center for some refreshments and a 30-minute presentation by Matt Pozen that will explore the evening's theme in more depth. At the end there will be time for discussion and questions. Each Thursday Evening Mass will focus on a different theme: March 1st --- Christian Unity (Fr. Bob Coleman) March 8th --- Persecuted Christians (Fr. Larry Dreffein, OFM) March 15th --- Refugees and Exiles (Fr. Michael Kearney) March 22nd --- The Holy Eucharist (Fr. 8 March Spiritual Reading In the Footsteps of Jesus: A Chronicle of His Life and the Origins of Christianity by Jean-Pierre Isbouts This compelling and beautiful book traces Jesus's path from Bethlehem to Nazareth; throughout his "mission triangle" of Lower Galilee and into the Decapolis; and ultimately on his journey to Jerusalem, the Garden of Gethsemane and Golgotha. The location photography, artwork, ancient artifacts, and maps help anyone visualize and comprehend the period when Jesus was on earth 2000 years ago. A copy of this book is available at the Wood Dale Public Library. FROM THE CHANCELLOR LENTEN REGULATIONS 1. Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. 2. Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 years of age is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. 3. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. 4. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful. 5. Lent is the principal season of penance in the Christian year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of voluntary self-denial (in addition to following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and a performance of works of charity and mercy. 9 COMMUNICATION from the Bishop CRS: Jesus in disguise. How will you help? Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, At this time of year we have the opportunity to reflect on how we have responded to the gospel call to serve Jesus through the poor and vulnerable. This weekend ( March 10 & 11) we will take up The Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Collection, which helps children, women, and families around the world. Funds from this special Collection helped make it possible for a delegation from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Migration and Refugee Services (MRS) to visit India to see the extent of the fight against human trafficking. It is estimated that over 6.5 million women and girls are being sexually exploited in India alone. The Collection allowed the delegation to meet with advocates such as Fr. P. Maria Susai of the Diocese of Kottar in southern India. Through these missions, MRS and people like Fr. Susai can continue to provide an on-the-ground response to help put an end to this modern form of slavery In Eastern Europe, young women are persuaded by friends or relatives to find employment abroad, but many times they are kidnapped and forced to work as prostitutes instead. Maja Brenjo, who coordinates antitrafficking programs for Catholic Relief Services Bosnia, says that their owners may even lock the girls up in brothels while the sellers make $3,000 per girl. Funds from The CRS Collection provide job skills and education, offering a defense to thousands of young women who now may never have to suffer the horror of being sold for other people s use. 10 Respect Life NorthWest Families for Life: Year in Review During 2017 at our 3 times-a-week prayer vigils on the sidewalk outside Advantage Healthcare in Wood Dale, Illinois, God granted us front-row seats to marvel at the work of His mighty hand in SAVING 34 CHILDREN FROM ABORTION. - Most recently, in December there was a couple who parked in the lot and argued for 30 minutes. The woman finally got out and walked to the door of the clinic but the man refused to follow. She returned to the car yelling at him, but he would not budge. They left together, never entering the clinic. Praise God for this strong man who saved his child's life simply by refusing to get out of the car! I can't help but believe that it was the prayer of those of us gathered on the sidewalk that strengthened him in his resolve as he saw us in the cold for love of him and his family. - In November, a couple came for an abortion but during a conversation with one of our sidewalk counselors, the woman began to cry and told him that she "knew it (abortion) was evil." They decided to keep the baby! Praise God for this young couple from Africa. - Another cold day in November, a young couple came out long before Dr. Goyal arrived. Terry was able to talk to them and gave them a handful of helpful literature. They confirmed that they would give their child life and the husband made the sign of the cross. The abortion clinic escort saw this and tried relentlessly to stop Terry, but he persevered and was blessed to witness this save. ** The Tragic News** - During this same year, a staggering 849 babies lost their lives to abortion at Advantage Healthcare in Wood Dale. And this is only at one abortion clinic in one state. Each one of these babies who died at Wood Dale was a unique, unrepeatable instance of God's creative love. They could have been someone's best friend, spouse, or sibling, but were not allowed the chance. They were a child of God. These were our brothers and sisters in Christ. Yes, each life matters to you and me. This is why we continue to remember them. They have no families to mourn them. We will be their families. Please consider joining us this month at one of the events below to come together as a family to mourn the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. If you feel called, join us at a prayer vigil at an abortion clinic to prevent more lives from being lost this new year. 14 Holy Ghost Youth Ministry The Holy Ghost Youth Ministry took a field trip to the organization Feed My Starving Children where they packaged nutritious food packets that will be sent to third world countries to feed the poorest of the poor.
