Amen. Sacramental Information Baptism Takes place on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. Before scheduling your child s Baptism, you must attend a preparation class. Call the parish office to make arrangements. First Eucharist Celebrated each spring, available to youth who have completed required preparation. First Reconciliation Celebrated each spring, available to youth who have completed required preparation. Confirmation Celebrated each year and available to youth who have completed required preparation. Reconciliation Available Saturdays at 4:00 PM or by appointment. During Advent and Lent Saturday Reconciliation will begin at 3:00 PM. Communal Services are also scheduled during Advent and Lent. Marriage Diocesan policy requires 6 months preparation time. Contact parish office for appointment. RCIA RCIA is a process for fully initiating adults into the Catholic faith. It is for those who have never been baptized, or were baptized and/or raised in another Christian denomination and are now interested in becoming Catholic. This process is also for Baptized Catholics who never completed their initiation through the sacraments of Eucharist and/or Confirmation. If interested, please contact the parish office at Eucharist for the Homebound If you or a member of your family cannot attend Mass because of illness or disability, a Minister of Care will bring Communion to you. 3 Readings and Resources Sunday Reflection Our Sanctuary Lamp MISSION STATEMENT Today we celebrate Christ s ascension into heaven and his commissioning of the disciples to carry on his mission in the world. First we hear Luke s description of those events in the opening verses of the Acts of the Apostles. Next we hear words of encouragement and guidance from the Letter to the Ephesians. Finally we hear Mark s account of the Ascension, foretelling the mighty words and acts the Christian community would do in Jesus name. Together these scriptures give us a vision of the mission of the church of Jesus Christ a mission statement of sorts. Like mission statements in our parishes and corporations, this mission statement can help us set priorities and focus our activities. It can guide and support us as we strive to continue Christ s messianic mission on earth. Our sanctuary lamp is a 7-day candle that is always lit above the tabernacle. If you would like to contribute $20 to the cost of the weekly candle we will print a Thank You in the bulletin. You are also welcome to make the donation in memory of a loved one or loved ones. There are envelopes on the book racks for your donation. Just include a paper that states how you would like your name and/or the names for memorials printed. Names will be printed in the bulletin in the order in which they are received, either in the collection or at the office. Paluch Co., Treasures From Our Tradition In Ireland and the United Kingdom, Mother s Day is over. Mothering Sunday was on the Fourth Sunday of Lent. Long ago, people were freed from work to travel on this day to the parish where they were baptized, their Mother Church. Often, people were reunited with their mothers on this day. Employers would release their workers and servants for this visit. The American celebration, while based on this custom, really has to do with an antiwar movement of mothers in Civil War times. They crusaded for better sanitary conditions for their sons. When President Wilson instituted the first Mother s Day in 1912, it was a day to fly the flag in honor of mothers whose children had died in battle. Knowing the tradition is a good balance to our celebration today. We can enfold in prayer the mothers who have suffered the loss of their children in war. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. He is a certified catechist at Mission San Luis Obispo, California, and has a master s degree in Pastoral Studies from Loyola University New Orleans. 6 Goodbye to a Parish That I Love Friends, It is with a very excited and yet heavy heart that I find myself writing this letter. My family and I (Judy, Bryanne, Tara, and Michaella) came wandering through the doors of this Church some fifteen or so years ago, somewhat lost and broken I may add. Although we were apprehensive, we were greeted warmly, and we were welcomed. It didn t take long before Holy Ghost became our home and we became entrenched in Her beauty. Little did we know that when we crossed that threshold, the word family would have a whole new meaning. People ask me often, how did you know you were being called to the Diaconate? For a long time, I did not have a good answer. I would say, it was just a feeling. As my formation continued and my Spiritual awareness grew I discovered Heaven here on Earth. I was awe struck in my discovery that I walked side by side with God each and every day of my life. Friends, not only were we made in His likeness and image, but He resides in each and every one of us. This discovery radically changed my life. Something else you should know about me is I don t believe in coincidence. I don t believe it was by chance that my family and I came wandering into Holy Ghost. I m constantly aware and know it wasn t chance that pulled at my heart and called me to help Judy (my wife) teach her Faith Formation classes, and eventually take on my own. Chance wasn t the name of the woman who approached me, said she saw something in me and asked if I would consider participating in a leadership role in our teen ministry program, nor was chance the name of the woman who sat next to me on a Teen Spirit retreat and told me it wasn t good enough, to simply just be a good person. No, she insisted that one needed to be the best version of one s self and that one could not be the best version of themselves without fully coming to know one s self through God. A good person is definitely a part of God s plan but it surely does not encompass the big picture. In order to fulfill God s plan we need to discover who we are and what individual and miraculous gifts God has given us. Together with the Spirt of God, His Grace, and the help of those around us, we must develop ourselves into this best version of ourselves and we must commit ourselves to a lifetime devotion to serve God, and serve each other. I know I may have rambled on, but it was very important for me, to let all of you know how important you have been in my life and in my Spiritual development. As I said in the very beginning, you don t always have an answer to the question, how do you know if you are being called? But you know there is something, because it tugs hard. Recently there have been some dynamic changes in my life, my job being one of them. Although I am working for the same company, they are expanding and growing (all good things), but with that comes change and the need for me to expand the areas and divisions I will oversee. On the other end of the dynamic changes I speak of is the Diaconate. God willing, I will be Ordained on August 25 th of this year, and ever since this journey began some four and a half years ago it has always been you, the people and community that make up the Church of Holy Ghost, that I thought and dreamt of serving. 7 When I said it was with a very excited and heavy heart that I was writing this letter it is the heavy heart that foretells of our moving. The decision was heartfelt and did not come easy. At this parish we are family. Over the past fifteen years we have molded each other into who we are. We have been with one another through good times and bad, sickness and health, and I know you will continue to do so because your faith is strong. As for Judy and I, we will be moving to Kankakee, IL. When this journey began we were unsure of a lot of things, but a few weeks ago I was asked by the Deaconate office to visit St. John Paul II in Kankakee, not too far from where we will be living. I wish my words could express for you the emotions and feeling that came over Judy and I as we participated in mass that Saturday evening. At the end of the mass, although I knew in my heart this is where I belonged, I didn t want to sway Judy s decision in choosing a parish, so I just prayed silently for a short moment. I nearly broke down in tears when she reached for my hand and asked me if I wanted to go to the back and introduce ourselves to the pastor. After thirty-two years together, she just smiled and said me too, I think this is where we belong. I know we will continue to see each other, my friends, as we are family and my family of origin is here as well. If you find yourselves down near Kankakee please look us up. You ll find us at St. John Paul II. Please continue to pray for my family and me as we will always be praying for all of you. One of my best friends, a guy who grew up only a few blocks from here once told me, The safest place to be is in someone s prayers, and the very best place to be is in the hands of God. 8 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal Pledge Report The 2018 Ministries Appeal is underway. This is the first report. Thank you to all who have pledged. Thank you for your generosity. Your gifts will benefit so many through the thirty ministries our annual appeal supports. Our parish s goal for the 2018 CMAA is $ 53,300. Our hope is that every parishioner will contribute as Partners in Caring, as every gift-large and small makes a difference. If we raise more than our goal, 70% of the amount paid over goal will be returned to us for our use. This is an amazing opportunity for our parish! Therefore, Holy Ghost will be staffing the second week (6/8-9/18) as we have been doing during the winter months. You will see volunteer sign-up sheets for those dates starting May 19/20 through June 1/2. Because of changes PADS is making to the summer sites, Holy Ghost will not be needed as a host site on Friday nights during July and August. CORE will keep you informed if other changes and needs occur for this summer. CORE thanks all of the volunteers who have staffed the winter PADS site. 11 Father John Hornicak has experienced some medical problems requiring hospitalization. To allow him time to recover, Bishop Conlon has appointed Fr. Bob Hoffenkamp as temporary administrator of Holy Ghost Parish. Please remember Fr. John in your prayers. Reflections from the Saints Let everyone be struck with fear, let the whole world tremble, and let the heavens exult when Christ, the Son of the living God, is present on the altar in the hands of a priest... God and the Son of God, so humbled Himself that for our salvation He hides Himself under an ordinary piece of bread! Saint Francis of Assisi A letter to the entire Order Respect Life On Holy Saturday we received a call at 8 am from Holly, sidewalk counselor outside Planned Parenthood in Aurora. She said she was sending a couple over in a white van. When they arrived at Waterleaf, one of our patient advocates met with the couple. The father said they had scheduled a 7:15 am appointment at PP and they intended to abort. When they arrived for their appointment, he stated it appeared PP was "closed." He thought it was a sign and they couldn't do "this", especially on "this day." He said the sidewalk counselors outside PP directed them to Waterleaf. Our medical team performed a pregnancy test and an ultrasound, confirming they were indeed pregnant. After further conversation with our team, they stated they intend to parent. Miracle happen at Waterleaf everyday through the intercession of the Holy Spirit and the support of parishioners like you. Your prayers and support of Waterleaf are greatly appreciated. It will be held on the grounds of St. Mary s church in Plano (901 N Center St). This retreat satisfies the retreat requirement needed for many of the Religious Recognitions. This year a special Ad Altare Dei Orientation class will be held at the Ros-a-Ree for those who pre-register for it and the class itself. The event is open to ALL Scouts (male or female) who are entering the 6 th grade or higher in the Fall. Registration beforehand is required.
