Amen. Sacramental Information Baptism Takes place on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. Before scheduling your child s Baptism, you must attend a preparation class. Call the parish office to make arrangements. First Eucharist Celebrated each spring, available to youth who have completed required preparation. First Reconciliation Celebrated each spring, available to youth who have completed required preparation. Confirmation Celebrated each year and available to youth who have completed required preparation. Reconciliation Available Saturdays at 4:00 PM or by appointment. During Advent and Lent Saturday Reconciliation will begin at 3:00 PM. Communal Services are also scheduled during Advent and Lent. Marriage Diocesan policy requires 6 months preparation time. Contact parish office for appointment. RCIA RCIA is a process for fully initiating adults into the Catholic faith. It is for those who have never been baptized, or were baptized and/or raised in another Christian denomination and are now interested in becoming Catholic. This process is also for Baptized Catholics who never completed their initiation through the sacraments of Eucharist and/or Confirmation. If interested, please contact the parish office at Eucharist for the Homebound If you or a member of your family cannot attend Mass because of illness or disability, a Minister of Care will bring Communion to you. 3 Readings and Resources Sunday Reflection KEEP HOLY THE SABBATH There s no better way to deepen our Lenten practice than to review the Ten Commandments. The first three, having to do with our right relationship to God, get the most ink. The one we busy people probably have the most problem with is keeping holy the Sabbath. If we take this commandment literally, babies will go undiapered and dishes will stay on the table, or perhaps meals will not be served. The sick will go unattended and nothing that has anything to do with physical labor will be done. Is mental labor really work? How about changing that dirty diaper (poor baby!)? We need to depend on God to discern how to observe real Sabbath time in our lives. The point of this commandment is that God has given us a great gift: one whole day per week when we are free to rest, worship God, sing, feast, love, and rejoice. As Psalm 19 proclaims: The law of the Lord is perfect, / refreshing the soul (19:8). Our Sabbath rest is a great gift, to be received from God with joy, not with nitpicking. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Our Sanctuary Lamp Our sanctuary lamp is a 7-day candle that is always lit above the tabernacle. If you would like to contribute $20 to the cost of the weekly candle we will print a Thank You in the bulletin. You are also welcome to make the donation in memory of a loved one or loved ones. There are envelopes on the book racks for your donation. Just include a paper that states how you would like your name and/or the names for memorials printed. Names will be printed in the bulletin in the order in which they are received, either in the collection or at the office. Our Sanctuary Lamp this week is lit through the generosity of: Fred & Sandi Sobieski In memory of: Rose Sobieski Treasures From Our Tradition If your parish is reading from Year B of the Lectionary today, and not Year A, as is normally done when there are elect present for the scrutinies and preparing for Easter baptism, you hear about Jesus driving the money-changers from the temple. If you wished to get as close as possible to this site today, you would in fact be at a Muslim shrine, the Dome of the Rock, built on the ruins of Herod s temple. Archeologists believe that this striking, gold-domed crown of a shrine is set precisely where the Holy of Holies once was. Jews believe that the rock is the exact spot where Abraham was prepared to sacrifice Isaac. It is not a mosque, as some think, but a shrine, the oldest one in the Muslim world. For them, the rock is the place from which the Prophet Mohammed ascended on a visit to heaven. The Crusaders mistook the shrine for the actual Temple of Solomon, and the infamous Knights Templar used it as their headquarters and model for their churches elsewhere. The geometric perfection of the shrine is a mathematician s dream. The inscriptions are not exactly hospitable though, since they encourage Christians to depart from error and declare that Jesus son of Mary was only a messenger of God. In ancient times, those who prayed here after walking around the rock were given a certificate entitling the bearer to admission to paradise. The ticket had to be buried with them. Rev. 7 Lenten Reconciliation at the Pilgrimage Church ( See above) March 9 and Hours of Reconciliation will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church, 132 Arthur St. The priests from our Deanery will be available from noon until 10:00 pm on March 9 When was the last time you went to confession? and from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm on March 10. There will be some times available for confession in both Polish and Spanish. Even if it has been recently, why not take advantage of the opportunity to do so now? Page 7

8 March Spiritual Reading In the Footsteps of Jesus: A Chronicle of His Life and the Origins of Christianity by Jean-Pierre Isbouts This compelling and beautiful book traces Jesus's path from Bethlehem to Nazareth; throughout his "mission triangle" of Lower Galilee and into the Decapolis; and ultimately on his journey to Jerusalem, the Garden of Gethsemane and Golgotha. The location photography, artwork, ancient artifacts, and maps help anyone visualize and comprehend the period when Jesus was on earth 2000 years ago. 9 COMMUNICATION from the Bishop CRS: Jesus in disguise. How will you help? Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, At this time of year we have the opportunity to reflect on how we have responded to the gospel call to serve Jesus through the poor and vulnerable. Next weekend ( March 10 & 11) we will take up The Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Collection, which helps children, women, and families around the world. Funds from this special Collection helped make it possible for a delegation from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Migration and Refugee Services (MRS) to visit India to see the extent of the fight against human trafficking. It is estimated that over 6.5 million women and girls are being sexually exploited in India alone. The Collection allowed the delegation to meet with advocates such as Fr. P. Maria Susai of the Diocese of Kottar in southern India. Through these missions, MRS and people like Fr. Susai can continue to provide an on-the-ground response to help put an end to this modern form of slavery In Eastern Europe, young women are persuaded by friends or relatives to find employment abroad, but many times they are kidnapped and forced to work as prostitutes instead. Maja Brenjo, who coordinates antitrafficking programs for Catholic Relief Services Bosnia, says that their owners may even lock the girls up in brothels while the sellers make $3,000 per girl. Funds from The CRS Collection provide job skills and education, offering a defense to thousands of young women who now may never have to suffer the horror of being sold for other people s use. 10 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal 2018 Thank you to everyone who has already made a pledge to the 2018 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA). Your gifts will benefit so many through the thirty ministries our annual appeal supports. Our parish s goal for the 2018 CMAA is $ 53,300. Our hope is that every parishioner will contribute as Partners in Caring, as every gift-large and small makes a difference. If we raise more than our goal, 70% of the amount paid over goal will be returned to us for our use. This is an amazing opportunity for our parish! FROM THE CHANCELLOR LENTEN REGULATIONS 1. Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. 2. Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 years of age is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. 3. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. 4. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful. 5. Lent is the principal season of penance in the Christian year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of voluntary self-denial (in addition to following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and a performance of works of charity and mercy.
