Amen. Sacramental Information Baptism Takes place on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. Before scheduling your child s Baptism, you must attend a preparation class. Call the parish office to make arrangements. First Eucharist Celebrated each spring, available to youth who have completed required preparation. First Reconciliation Celebrated each spring, available to youth who have completed required preparation. Confirmation Celebrated each year and available to youth who have completed required preparation. Reconciliation Available Saturdays at 4:00 PM or by appointment. During Advent and Lent Saturday Reconciliation will begin at 3:00 PM. Communal Services are also scheduled during Advent and Lent. Marriage Diocesan policy requires 6 months preparation time. Contact parish office for appointment. RCIA RCIA is a process for fully initiating adults into the Catholic faith. It is for those who have never been baptized, or were baptized and/or raised in another Christian denomination and are now interested in becoming Catholic. This process is also for Baptized Catholics who never completed their initiation through the sacraments of Eucharist and/or Confirmation. If interested, please contact the parish office at Eucharist for the Homebound If you or a member of your family cannot attend Mass because of illness or disability, a Minister of Care will bring Communion to you. 3 Readings and Resources Our Sanctuary Lamp Sunday Reflection SAVED BY GOD S LOVE Because the people broke the old covenant, God promised a new covenant, not in the blood of oxen and other animals, but in the blood of the Son, Jesus Christ. This new covenant, foreseen from afar by Jeremiah and the prophets, was not to be engraved on stone, or written on paper, but carved on our hearts, so that we might know God intimately. Not by keeping many laws are we to be saved, but by the love of God, living and real in our hearts through the sacrifice of Christ. Our Eucharist is the pledge of that indwelling of Christ, and of our response of praise and thanksgiving to God for the mercy, love, and kindness shown to us in forgiving our sins and cleansing our hearts of everything evil. God issues this invitation to intimacy by offering us the chance to have our sufferings transformed into the perfect love of the Savior, who first loved us. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Our Sanctuary Lamp this week is lit through the generosity of: Heidi Ehrke In memory of: Helmar Butch Ehrke Treasures From Our Tradition Over the next two weeks, as we hear of the interior anguish of Jesus, we are led to the Garden of Gethsemane, the scene of a night of suffering, failure, and loss. In Hebrew, the word means olive press, and it was an olive grove, although only a few trees remain. Olives can t be eaten off the trees, they need to be cured knocked from the trees at harvest time, scooped into a stone basin, and cracked open by a heavy millstone. The crushing stone weight was itself called a gethsemane, and once it was lowered onto the olives, oil from the fruit and the inner stone would drip into a groove and flow into jars. The night before his death, Jesus experienced such anguish that scripture says his own blood perspired from him, an image no one who understands olive oil production could miss. Today, the Mount of Olives is within the city of Jerusalem and the site of the Church of All Nations, also known as the Basilica of the Agony. It was built in 1924, funded by Catholics in twelve different countries. An open-air altar on the grounds is used by Anglicans on Holy Thursday every year. Nearby is the Russian Church of Mary Magdalene, built by the czar in 1888, its magnificent golden domes a distinctive landmark. There is also another tiny Catholic Church, called Dominus Flevit, or The Cry of the Lord, built in a teardrop shape in the mid -1950s. For centuries, the Franciscan order has had the care of the shrines of the Holy Land, and our Good Friday collection helps sustain these precious sites. 6 FROM THE CHANCELLOR LENTEN REGULATIONS 1. Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. 2. Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 years of age is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. 3. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. 4. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful. 5. Lent is the principal season of penance in the Christian year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of voluntary self-denial (in addition to following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and a performance of works of charity and mercy. Special Prayers Are Needed for our Catechumens and Candidates Who Have Been Studying in the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults During our season of Lent we want to especially pray for our Catechumens and Candidates as we all prepare to renew our Baptismal vows on Easter. The Masses are offered by various priests from the diocese, and this year they focus on a variety of timely themes. Afterwards, everyone is invited into the Parish Center for some refreshments and a 30-minute presentation by Matt Pozen that will explore the evening's theme in more depth. At the end there will be time for discussion and questions. Each Thursday Evening Mass will focus on a different theme: March 22nd --- The Holy Eucharist (Fr. Greg Skowron) All are welcome. 8 Respect Life NorthWest Families for Life: Year in Review During 2017 at our 3 times-a-week prayer vigils on the sidewalk outside Advantage Healthcare in Wood Dale, Illinois, God granted us front-row seats to marvel at the work of His mighty hand in SAVING 34 CHILDREN FROM ABORTION. - Most recently, in December there was a couple who parked in the lot and argued for 30 minutes. The woman finally got out and walked to the door of the clinic but the man refused to follow. She returned to the car yelling at him, but he would not budge. They left together, never entering the clinic. Praise God for this strong man who saved his child's life simply by refusing to get out of the car! I can't help but believe that it was the prayer of those of us gathered on the sidewalk that strengthened him in his resolve as he saw us in the cold for love of him and his family. - In November, a couple came for an abortion but during a conversation with one of our sidewalk counselors, the woman began to cry and told him that she "knew it (abortion) was evil." They decided to keep the baby! Praise God for this young couple from Africa. - Another cold day in November, a young couple came out long before Dr. Goyal arrived. Terry was able to talk to them and gave them a handful of helpful literature. They confirmed that they would give their child life and the husband made the sign of the cross. The abortion clinic escort saw this and tried relentlessly to stop Terry, but he persevered and was blessed to witness this save. ** The Tragic News** - During this same year, a staggering 849 babies lost their lives to abortion at Advantage Healthcare in Wood Dale. And this is only at one abortion clinic in one state. Each one of these babies who died at Wood Dale was a unique, unrepeatable instance of God's creative love. They could have been someone's best friend, spouse, or sibling, but were not allowed the chance. They were a child of God. These were our brothers and sisters in Christ. Yes, each life matters to you and me. This is why we continue to remember them. They have no families to mourn them. We will be their families. If you feel called, join us at a prayer vigil at an abortion clinic to prevent more lives from being lost this new year. 9 myparish App Feature of the Week Thank you to so many of our Holy Ghost parishioners who have downloaded Holy Ghost s myparish App on the First Sunday of Lent. We continue exploring the features in the App with the Feature of the week.. Now that you have had some time with the App, it is time to join a group ministry at Holy Ghost. Groups Parishioner communication just got more relevant and easier. The group moderator can push targeted notifications directly to specific groups of people, whether it s for ministry, administration, or evangelization. Parishioners can contribute to parish life by starting discussions, commenting, or replying in the app, in effect engaging other parishioners and non-parishioners alike. The group moderator respects the privacy of the group and is allowed to start discussions and manage the membership of the group. If you plan to join any of the wonderful ministry groups we have here at Holy Ghost, you will need to create an account. Touch the menu button on the top left of the home screen ( 3 parallel lines). Tap Create an account. Input your address, password of 8 characters ( don t forget that password), and date of birth. A tip for the date of birth is to scroll the year first, then do the month and day. On an android phone, tap 2018 to scroll your year. If you ever forget your password, touch My Account. On that page touch, Tap to Edit. There you can change your password. Sign in. A Welcome screen appears listing all the groups of the parish. Find the group you wish to join and tap the plus sign to the right of the group. An alert will tell you your request was sent to the group moderator. A discussion for your group won t start right away because all the moderators have not yet been set up in the App. So be patient, and eventually you will get a message welcoming you to the group from your group moderator. After the moderator approves you, this group will be at the top of your group list. The user gets messages and can invite others into the group. Information is never shared, the Administrator and moderator are the only people who see it. Open the group you joined to view discussions. If it is an open group, you can reply or comment on the discussion. If it is a closed group, it will be a one way communication from your moderator. Your message will appear as a push notification on your phone. If you are a key member in your group, you may be asked to be a moderator. So please download the app, and Kelly Scardina will get back to the moderators about an instructional meeting on the how to s of managing your group. -Invite a Friend -Inviting others to a parish group just got a whole lot easier. Know someone you d like to invite to a group in your parish? Just tap Invite a friend from the Group in the app and send the invite via text message, , social media, or any way your device allows. -Start a Discussion-- Initiate a good discussion or simply ask a question. All the group members are immediately notified of a new discussion and can quickly comment or reply. Only your group sees the discussion. The Diocese of Joliet Victim Assistance Coordinator is available to help victims/ survivors of child sexual abuse by a cleric, employee or volunteer of the Catholic Church. The Victim Assistance Coordinator will report to Bishop Conlon and coordinate efforts of pastoral support and outreach to assist in the healing process. 11 Around the Diocese Good Friday Donation for Holy Land As we continue in the season of Lent, this special penitential season of the liturgical year is an excellent time to turn our thoughts even more toward our mission of growing in a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and supporting our brothers and sisters in the Holy Land. Lent offers another special opportunity to support the Christians and the institutions in the land of His birth, death and Resurrection. This is the third year that the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre are helping promote the Good Friday Collection. None of the monies collected on Good Friday go to the Equestrian Order. Rather 100% of these funds go to maintain the holy sites that are visited by our pilgrims and support numerous Franciscan apostolates that directly help the Christians in the Holy Land. After his marriage was annulled by the Church, Father Hans entered the Conventual Franciscans as a Postulant in 2004 and, on May 26, 2012, at the age of 50, was ordained a priest. After a pastoral assignment, he was named Vocation Director for the Conventual Franciscans in an area covering Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Iowa. She has also consulted in Religious education programs in the Chicagoland area since Aging thru Tobit with Dr. Joan Gorski Most Christians believe that the Bible holds the answers to their questions about daily living and that reading the Scriptures will show them good examples to follow for their own lives. Think for a moment and try to list a few examples of healthy families in the Bible who are ideals worth emulating. 13 Help Wanted Cemetery Seasonal Workers Needed The Diocese of Joliet Cemetery Office is seeking to hire multiple Seasonal Cemetery workers. These positions consist of the performance of seasonal work in the cemetery for the maximum period as outlined in the union contract (mid-march to October 31 st ). 14 Holy Ghost School Holy Ghost staff takes a break to pose for a picture during the Holy Ghost McTeacher s Night. ( Posted by Julie Travers, Community Contributor for the Chicago Tribune.) Holy Ghost School held its Annual McTeacher s Night on Tuesday, January 30th at the Itasca McDonald s on Irving Park Rd. The night was organized as a fund raiser for the school. Several teachers and staff members worked serving freshly prepared meals to students and their families. Principal Tony Jimenez volunteered most of the night serving ice cream, shakes, and sundaes. Sara Lasica also worked hard at the drive-thru window. The McTeacher s jobs included greeting guests, working the front counter, making ice cream cones, selling apple pies an even dressing up as an apple pie. A special thank you goes to Linda Diaz who volunteered to dress up as an apple pie. Also, thank you to Pie Helpers Julie Messina and Kelly Collins. A special shout out to PTA representative Nicole Smith who organized the event. Holy Ghost teachers and staff worked hard and with excitement, while the families enjoyed a spectacular evening.
