Fed by the Holy Spirit, we nurture our faith through private prayer, sacraments and liturgy, through life-long learning and teaching of Gospel values, and through love and support of each other. Empowered by the same Spirit, we live our faith in action through ministries of service, social justice, evangelization and witness, because all people are called to one and the same goal: unity with God, now and forever. Amen. First Reconciliation Celebrated each spring, available to youth who have completed required preparation. Confirmation Celebrated each year and available to youth who have completed required preparation. Reconciliation Available Saturdays at 4:00 PM or by appointment. During Advent and Lent Saturday Reconciliation will begin at 3:00 PM. Communal Services are also scheduled during Advent and Lent at the Deanery Church. Marriage Diocesan policy requires 6 months preparation time. Contact parish office for appointment. RCIA RCIA is a process for fully initiating adults into the Catholic faith. It is for those who have never been baptized, or were baptized and/or raised in another Christian denomination and are now interested in becoming Catholic. This process is also for Baptized Catholics who never completed their initiation through the sacraments of Eucharist and/or Confirmation. If interested, please contact the parish office at Eucharist for the Homebound If you or a member of your family cannot attend Mass because of illness or disability, a Minister of Care will bring Communion to you. Call the parish office to make arrangements. Page 2

3 Readings and Resources Sunday Reflection Our Sanctuary Lamp HOW DO WE TREAT THE MESSENGER? Let s not be too hasty in defining who is the wicked one and who (namely us) is just! We are very quick to label others as evil, because we tend to label ourselves as good guys. We don t like it when we are brought up short by a prophetic voice that brings us some bad news about our own behavior. We don t like to be reproached for transgressions of the law or charged with violations of our training. We may condemn and abuse those who bring us up against these truths about ourselves when, if we were really good, we would thank them for helping to keep us on the right path. This is the way they treated the prophets and the way they treated Jesus. Is this also the way we treat those whose message we don t like? Our sanctuary lamp is a 7-day candle that is always lit above the tabernacle. If you would like to contribute $20 to the cost of the weekly candle we will print a Thank You in the bulletin. You are also welcome to make the donation in memory of a loved one or loved ones. There are envelopes on the book racks for your donation. Just include a paper that states how you would like your name and/or the names for memorials printed. Names will be printed in the bulletin in the order in which they are received, either in the collection or at the office. Our Sanctuary Lamp this week is lit through the generosity of: Amatore Laporta In memory of: Angelica Laporta Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Treasures From Our Tradition How long have there been parochial schools in the United States? Longer than you may imagine. The Jesuit fathers opened Saint Mary School in Philadelphia in 1782 in the first light of independence. Catholic and Protestant squabbles about the nature of education forced the Fathers to make this risky and innovative venture in the heart of the city. The school was closed by a devastating fire in 1902, but reopened in 1968 as St. Mary Interparochial School, the first example of a shared parochial school. It is also the only Catholic school within the confines of a national park. This is the Mother School of this uniquely American institution. Many parochial schools, especially in national parishes, were established to preserve the culture and language of the old country, and also to protect young people from prejudice. In other countries, Ireland for one, the Church is authorized to run national schools, sometimes under the sponsorship of a parish. In still other places, such as Quebec, publicly-funded separate schools were administered by the Church. Wherever the state funds Catholic schools, normally enrollment is guaranteed to all applicants. The Quebec system was dismantled in 1998 when the state decided to reorganize schools along linguistic lines rather than religious affiliation. Parochial schools require considerable sacrifice, but they endure as a distinctive treasure of the Church in the United States. 6 Eucharistic Exposition of Blessed Sacrament We have just started a Seven Sisters Apostolate here at Holy Ghost and each one of us spends an hour each week in Eucharistic Adoration. Eucharistic Adoration is the act of worshipping our Lord Jesus as He is truly present in the consecrated host. St. Teresa of Calcutta said, If I can give you any advice I beg you to get closer to the Eucharist and to Jesus. We must pray to Jesus to give us that tenderness of the Eucharist. We all like to spend time with our friends and family. Our very best friend and brother is Jesus, so we should make time to be with Him and allow Him to speak to us. St. Bernard of Clairvaux said, When God loves, He doesn't want anything else but to be loved; for He loves in order to be loved, know that with this love, those who will have loved Him will be happy. St. Paschal Baylon also said, Happy is the soul that know how to find Jesus in the Eucharist, and the Eucharist in all things. Here at Holy Ghost from Monday through Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m., we have the opportunity to come and adore our Lord. We can take this time to ask for assistance and guidance, to just talk to Him, to pray, or just sit quietly and be in the presence of our Lord. Consider stopping by Holy Ghost sometime between 7 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. on your way to work, to the train station, to school to drop off your children, or to run your errands. Our Lord is waiting to see YOU! An excellent website to learn more about the Eucharist Adoration is: savior.org Savior.org s mission is that of increasing awareness and devotion to our Lord in the Most Blessed Sacrament. We also seek to bring the live image of His living Presence to the homebound, the workplace, and to remote areas around the world. Savior.org's Online Devotions Enjoy a variety of prayer aids intended to enrich your time with our Lord in adoration. With the exception of a few brief periods each day, Our Lord in the Most Blessed Sacrament is presented live via webcam from the Chapel of Divine Love in Philadelphia, PA - a source of perpetual Eucharistic adoration by the Holy Spirit Adoration Sisters since Page 6

September Spiritual Reading Rethink Happiness: Dare to Embrace God and Experience True Joy by Paul George The book starts with the idea that we are all searching for happiness but looking in the wrong places. We re hungry for God's love, but we're stuffing ourselves with shallow relationships and unchecked materialism. Life coach Paul George invites Catholics to pursue authentic happiness by surrendering life to God and focusing on simple joys: daily prayer, a minimalist lifestyle, meaningful relationships, and an ongoing pursuit of God s will. A copy of this book is available at the Wood Dale Public Library. Page 7
