Amen. Sacramental Information Baptism Takes place on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. Before scheduling your child s Baptism, you must attend a preparation class. Call the parish office to make arrangements. First Eucharist Celebrated each spring, available to youth who have completed required preparation. First Reconciliation Celebrated each fall, available to youth who have completed required preparation. Confirmation Celebrated each year and available to youth who have completed required preparation. Reconciliation Available Saturdays at 4:00 PM or by appointment. During Advent and Lent Saturday Reconciliation will begin at 3:00 PM. Communal Services are also scheduled during Advent and Lent. Marriage Diocesan policy requires 6 months preparation time. Contact parish office for appointment. RCIA RCIA is a process for fully initiating adults into the Catholic faith. It is for those who have never been baptized, or were baptized and/or raised in another Christian denomination and are now interested in becoming Catholic. This process is also for Baptized Catholics who never completed their initiation through the sacraments of Eucharist and/or Confirmation. If interested, please contact the parish office at Eucharist for the Homebound If you or a member of your family cannot attend Mass because of illness or disability, a Minister of Care will bring Communion to you. 3 Readings and Resources Our Sanctuary Lamp Sunday Reflection TIRELESS DISCIPLESHIP The stories we ve been hearing these weeks come from the very first chapter of Mark, and they show us the public ministry of Jesus in its infancy. Today s account shows some of the strain or adjustment of his new life of preaching the reign of God, healing the sick, and casting out demons. Notice that after sunset, when darkness ended the workday, people brought the sick and possessed to Jesus. The following day he rose before dawn to get away by himself to pray, but to no avail. Simon Peter and the others don t just look for him, they pursue him, filled with the fervor that his ministry has incited. With the self-sacrificing example he gave until the end of his earthly life, he tells his followers that this is his whole purpose. Through Mark, he is also telling the early church, and he is telling us, that this is our purpose, our vocation: to be tireless in our pursuit of proclaiming the Good News, and in bringing the healing, reconciling touch of Christ to the world. Our sanctuary lamp is a 7-day candle that is always lit above the tabernacle. If you would like to contribute $20 to the cost of the weekly candle we will print a Thank You in the bulletin. You are also welcome to make the donation in memory of a loved one or loved ones. There are envelopes on the book racks for your donation. Just include a paper that states how you would like your name and/or the names for memorials printed. Names will be printed in the bulletin in the order in which they are received, either in the collection or at the office. Treasures From Our Tradition We re reading St. Paul s letter to the Corinthians these days. What was Corinth like? It had a beautiful setting on an isthmus, about fifty miles from Athens. The location makes for very easy exchange by sea routes between Greece and Italy, a factor in its economic success even today. In Paul s day it was a cosmopolitan and wealthy city with inhabitants drawn from all over the world, including a sizeable Jewish community. When Paul arrived about the year 50, the city was only about a century old, but already five times the size of Athens. Paul lived in Corinth for a year and a half, and a few years later came back for three months. The community of Christians there struggled against the influence of a very secular and self-indulgent society that was blind to the plight of the poor. Pagan attitudes afflicted the community, which had a way of breaking Paul s heart; he wrote to them sometimes with many tears (2 Corinthians 2:4). Today, Corinth is a small industrial city. Its historic core has been destroyed by a series of earthquakes over the centuries, and what little remained was totally obliterated in a war with Turkey in the 1820s. There s a core city with glamorous shops to catch the tourists, but it is mainly a cargo port, with piles of marble, tiles, and minerals everywhere, a huge oil refinery nearby, a busy canal, a modern fast rail line to Athens, and a meeting point of major highways. Today, the remains of the Temple of Apollo and the marketplace are more ruined than most such sites. Mass will be offered for all Parishioners in the Parish on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Holy Thursday, Easter Vigil, Easter Sunday, and Holy Days of Obligation. No other intentions will be taken for the Masses on these days. We hope for our new app to be a tool for fostering stronger parish life at Holy Ghost Parish and better engaging the New Evangelization. 7 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal Final Report 2017 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal Pledge Report The 2017 Ministries Appeal has concluded. This is the final report. Thank you to all who have paid their pledge. Our parish has reached its goal, even though there is a remaining balance. Next week we will announce the rebate that the parish has received. Thank you for your generosity. The Diocese of Joliet has mailed information about the 2018 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA) this month to all CMAA donors at Holy Ghost Parish. The CMAA supports thirty ministries that benefit every parish in the Diocese, including ours, as well as our friends and neighbors most in need. If we raise more than our goal, $53,300, 70% of the amount paid over the goal will be returned to us for our use. This is a great benefit for our parish! Please review the information you receive and prayerfully reflect on your gift to this year s CMAA. Commitment weekend is February 10 & 11. If you have your envelope that looks like the one below, bring it to Mass next weekend with your signed pledge commitment card to drop into the collection basket. We will mail it for you. Call for Nominations for Woman of the Year The Holy Ghost Council of Catholic Women will be electing their Woman of the Year for 2018 on February 13th at their General Membership Meeting. Please write a short nomination note about your candidate and the reasons why she should be elected Woman of the Year. This woman should have shown outstanding service to Holy Ghost Parish. Of these families, 59 were families with children. Those of you who were able to participate in the Giving Tree program, provided 173 children with gifts. You are truly awe-inspiring. You donated, you bought gifts, you sorted gifts, you packed, you helped with distribution. God s blessings on each and every one of you. February 23, 1942-January 18, 2018 Eileen Gulley, who touched countless lives of the people of Holy Ghost, has passed away. Eileen joined the staff at Holy Ghost in 1974 as a teacher. She became principal of the school in 1976 and retired in September of 1999 due to illness. Eileen was a warm, caring teacher and administrator creating a close knit family here at Holy Ghost School. Her dedication to her students and their families resonated throughout the building as she always had their best interest in mind. Anyone fortunate enough to work with Eileen admired her ability to inspire you and create a team spirit. Her spirit and influence still fills the school. We will miss Eileen and her dedication to Holy Ghost School. Eileen M. Gulley Beloved daughter of the late James and Mari (nee Haungs) Gulley. Loving sister of Ginger Goomis and the late Nancy (the late J. David) Smith. She received her M.A. from DePaul University and earned her Doctorate in Ministry from the University of St. Mary of The Lake. She also has been running the Biblical Institute of The Diocese of Joliet since 2013 and teaching in it since Most Christians believe that the Bible holds the answers to their questions about daily living and that reading the Scriptures will show them good examples to follow for their own lives. Think for a moment and try to list a few examples of healthy families in the Bible who are ideals worth emulating. Please join us and take a brief trip through the book of Tobit with Dr. Joan Gorski and discover some of the wisdom that is in our lives. 13 Seniors Invited to Defer Property Taxes Qualified senior citizens, aged 65 years and older are invited to apply for the Senior Citizen Real Estate Tax Deferral Program. The program allows participants to defer up to $5,000 of their current property tax payment until the property is sold. The deferral is treated as a loan and accrues 6 % simple interest until paid. To qualify, the applicant s household income cannot exceed $50,000. Additionally, the property must be used exclusively for residential purposes.
