3 Readings and Resources Sunday Reflection Our Sanctuary Lamp BELIEVING IN JESUS CHRIST Throughout the Easter season, all three of the Sunday readings are taken from the New Testament the Christian scriptures. Together they explore what it means to believe in Jesus as the Christ, the One who fulfilled the prophecies of the Jewish scriptures. Today s selections refer to our human weakness, yet they emphasize the forgiveness and peace that are available to those who put their faith in Jesus Christ the righteous one (1 John 2:2). In the Acts of the Apostles Peter invites everyone to repent, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be wiped away (Acts 3:19). The First Letter of John calls Jesus Christ expiation for our sins (1 John 2:2). Finally, in the Gospel Jesus greets the disciples with Peace and urges them to preach repentance, for the forgiveness of sins (Luke 24:47). Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Treasures From Our Tradition There are many ways in which religious communities are organized. Some have a central authority in a congregation, and others have a rule that is shared by all the members, but are a kind of federation of independent houses. Sometimes, congregations with distinct histories and ministries decide to merge. Several years ago, one of the largest mergers on record took place. Seven independent congregations of Dominican women religious, most in the Midwest, are now one new congregation enfolding more than seven hundred members spanning thirty-six states. The oldest of the founding groups, the so-called Kentucky Dominicans, began as a frontier community in Other communities have European roots. To get to this historic moment, the sisters spent many years in conversation, and approved the new structure by a two-thirds majority vote. This was then ratified by the Holy See. The merger allows the sisters to pool their resources in order to be more effective in ministry. They are living the Paschal Mystery, experiencing Christ s dying and rising in an inspiring way. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Our sanctuary lamp is a 7-day candle that is always lit above the tabernacle. If you would like to contribute $20 to the cost of the weekly candle we will print a Thank You in the bulletin. You are also welcome to make the donation in memory of a loved one or loved ones. There are envelopes on the book racks for your donation. Just include a paper that states how you would like your name and/or the names for memorials printed. 6 Columbian Award Knights of Columbus headquarters in New Haven, Connecticut announced Holy Ghost Council of Wood Dale has earned the Columbian Award for the fraternal year The award recognizes excellence in programs that serve the Church, community, families, pro-life, and youth. KC charitable activities encompass an almost infinite variety of local, national and international projects. Our unique charities include the Christian Refugee Relief Fund, Disaster Relief, Ultrasound Initiative, and Coats for Kids. We also partner with international charities including Special Olympics, the Global Wheelchair Mission and Habitat for Humanity. Knights and their families have greater opportunities to participate in a variety of activities that deepen their faith, promote the New Evangelization, and strengthen our parishes. These activities include the Family Fully Alive Devotional Program, Father's Day Affirmation of Wedding Vows, Food for Families and the Keep Christ in Christmas Campaign. The Columbian Award is a great honor for us. We are extremely pleased, said Grand Knight Larry Bernett in accepting the engraved plaque from District Deputy Ron Metty. Knights of Columbus The Knights of Columbus is the world s largest Catholic lay organization. Families obtain economic security and stability through optional low-cost life and long-term care insurance programs and annuities. Knights enjoy belonging to an organization with others who share the same religious beliefs, who are joined together in a common cause, and who provide opportunity to develop lasting friendships. The organization has grown each year to nearly 2,000,000 Catholic men in 16 countries worldwide. In 2016, Knights gave more than 75,000,000 hours of volunteer service and donated over $175,100,000 to charitable needs and projects. Join the Knights of Columbus At their Anniversary Mass On Sunday, April 22nd At 10:30 AM Men of Holy Ghost Come join us! Call Tony Patricelli Page 6
7 KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS INSURANCE FOUNDED BY A PRIEST TO PROTECT CATHOLIC FAMILIES The Knights of Columbus insurance story begins in the winter of 1882 in the basement of St. Mary s Church in New Haven, Conn. It was there that Knights of Columbus Venerable founder, Father Michael J. McGivney, gathered the men of his parish together to create a solution to a recurring problem. Many Catholics most of whom were immigrants were working and living in unfavorable conditions. And many, tragically, were dying young, leaving behind widows and orphans with insufficient financial resources. It was a cold reality that had confronted Father McGivney all too often not only in the lives of his parishioners but in his own. As a seminarian, he was forced to leave school and return home to aid his family when his father died unexpectedly. Though this story of financial ruin for Catholic families was common, Father McGivney was convinced that there was a way to change the ending. He knew that if the Catholic men in his parish came together in mutual aid, widows and orphans could receive the support they needed. He also knew that if Catholic men banded together, united by charity and unity, they could strengthen their faith, their families, and their communities. So, he established the Knights of Columbus, and with it, a pass-thehat insurance system to protect the Catholic families in his parish. Over time, that system has evolved, and today we stay true to our founding mission through our multi-billion dollar, top-rated insurance program. Members in the United States and Canada have exclusive access to our insurance program and products, including life insurance, retirement annuities, long-term care insurance, and disability income insurance. Insurance in force is a calculation of the total amount of money owed to policy holders. Put differently, $105 billion of life insurance in force means that the Knights of Columbus has a $105 billion promise to members and their families. The Knights of Columbus manages $22 billion of assets from their international headquarters in New Haven, Conn. The Knights of Columbus manages its assets in an ethical and responsible way. The Knights does not invest in companies that deal in: abortions, contraception, human cloning, embryonic stem cell research, for-profit health care that pays for any of the aforementioned, and pornography. In 2015 alone, the Knights of Columbus distributed $875 million to members and their beneficiaries in benefits, claims, maturities, annuities and dividends. The Knights of Columbus has more than 2 million active contracts in force. That means that hundreds of thousands of brother Knights have elected to help protect their families and their futures with the Knights of Columbus. Save the Date! A mailing will soon be sent to all parishioners who have not yet made a gift to the CMAA. Despite the severe February snowstorm we encountered over Commitment (In-Pew) Weekend, we are confident we can still meet our goal if we all partner together. If you have not done so already, Bishop Conlon asks that you please reflect on God s gifts to you and prayerfully consider supporting the CMAA. A gift to the CMAA, no matter the amount, will make a difference! By partnering together, we can continue to spread the Gospel message in our Diocese through our ministries. Our Outreach Committee is hosting a discussion on "Trauma-Informed Care". Joy Newburn from Catholic Charities will be speaking about this very important topic. This free presentation is for leaders who interact directly with people in need. Becoming traumainformed means recognizing that people often have many different types of trauma in their lives. People who have been traumatized need support and understanding from those around them. Often, trauma survivors can be re-traumatized by well-meaning caregivers and community service providers. Understanding the impact of trauma is an important first step in becoming a compassionate and supportive community.
