Amen. Sacramental Information Baptism Takes place on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. Before scheduling your child s Baptism, you must attend a preparation class. Call the parish office to make arrangements. First Eucharist Celebrated each spring, available to youth who have completed required preparation. First Reconciliation Celebrated each fall, available to youth who have completed required preparation. Confirmation Celebrated each year and available to youth who have completed required preparation. Reconciliation Available Saturdays at 4:00 PM or by appointment. During Advent and Lent Saturday Reconciliation will begin at 3:00 PM. Communal Services are also scheduled during Advent and Lent. Marriage Diocesan policy requires 6 months preparation time. Contact parish office for appointment. RCIA RCIA is a process for fully initiating adults into the Catholic faith. It is for those who have never been baptized, or were baptized and/or raised in another Christian denomination and are now interested in becoming Catholic. This process is also for Baptized Catholics who never completed their initiation through the sacraments of Eucharist and/or Confirmation. If interested, please contact the parish office at Eucharist for the Homebound If you or a member of your family cannot attend Mass because of illness or disability, a Minister of Care will bring Communion to you. 3 Readings and Resources Sunday Reflection GOD S PROMISE TO ALL PEOPLE Today Isaiah reminds the people of God that the land shall be restored to their possession, they shall rejoice to see their people return from the bondage of exile, and that they shall be a light to the nations. In other words, through the people of Israel, the Savior shall come to all people who seek God with a sincere heart. This brings joy and the radiance of God s glory to all the world and to all people everywhere. Through the fidelity of the people of God, and through God s fidelity to them, all people shall become God s children and rejoice in the fulfillment of God s promise to Israel. Our Sanctuary Lamp Our sanctuary lamp is a 7-day candle that is always lit above the tabernacle. If you would like to contribute $20 to the cost of the weekly candle we will print a Thank You in the bulletin. You are also welcome to make the donation in memory of a loved one or loved ones. There are envelopes on the book racks for your donation. Just include a paper that states how you would like your name and/or the names for memorials printed. Names will be printed in the bulletin in the order in which they are received, either in the collection or at the office. Treasures From Our Tradition Where on earth would you go to honor the magi? Iran or Saudi Arabia, Tarshish or the Isles come to mind, but Cologne, Germany would be a good choice. There the Shrine of the Three Kings has been the centerpiece of the city s cathedral since the fourth century. Today it is the largest reliquary in the world: a gilded and ornamented triple casket gleaming high above the altar. In the fourth century, the supposed relics of the wise men were taken from Constantinople to Milan, where they remained until the German Emperor with the unlikely name Frederick Barbarossa (Red Beard) gave them to the Archbishop of Cologne. Ever since, pilgrims have streamed into the city to honor the magi, the first of all pilgrims, and thus the heavenly patrons of all who have some holy wanderlust. This largest Gothic cathedral in Europe today was begun in the mid-1200s to house the relics. In medieval times, the relics in a city s possession were often the key to a sound international economy. The reliquary was last opened in 1864, and the remains of three men were indeed discovered. The cathedral is well worth a visit, with enormous twin spires forming the largest façade of any church in the world (it is the model for St. Patrick s in New York). Construction began in 1248 and ended in 1880, a six-hundred-year project. Today, it is a World Heritage Site, described by the U.N. as an exceptional work of human creative genius. This great treasure of our tradition suffered fourteen direct bomb hits in World War II but did not collapse. It survived while the city burned around it, preserved, the townspeople say, by three heavenly patrons. 6 2017 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal 2017 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal Pledge Report The 2017 Ministries Appeal is underway. It is very important that your pledge be paid so that our parish will reach its goal. Once we have reached the goal in paid pledges, 70% of the additional funds received will be returned to the parish for our use. Thank you for your generosity. As always, thank you so much for your generosity Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal The 2018 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal is now underway! The Diocese of Joliet is mailing information about the 2018 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA) this month to all CMAA donors at Holy Ghost Parish. The CMAA supports thirty ministries that benefit every parish in the Diocese, including ours, as well as our friends and neighbors most in need. If we raise more than our goal, $53,300, 70% of the amount paid over the goal will be returned to us for our use. This is a great benefit for our parish! January Spiritual Reading Angels Among Us: Extraordinary Encounters with Heavenly Beings by Wanda Rosseland This book is a collection of stories of everyday people little children, old women, young men, and more who had their lives stopped for a moment and redirected with a little help from Heaven. Call for Nominations for Woman of the Year The Holy Ghost Council of Catholic Women will be electing their Woman of the Year for 2018 on February 13th at their General Membership Meeting. Please write a short nomination note about your candidate and the reasons why she should be elected Woman of the Year. This woman should have shown outstanding service to Holy Ghost Parish. 9 Holy Ghost Youth Ministry The Holy Ghost YOUTH GROUP is having a FUND RAISER to help cover costs of activities. Purchase a MEAL THAT HEALS meal bundle for $15 for a family of 4. Bundles include one of 4 kinds of Communio Pasta Gravy Sauce and a box of Barilla pasta. All Proceeds of the sauces go to Charity and to our youth group. Bundles can be purchased after Masses, or in the Parish Office. Scholarships offered through this program have the potential to cover up to 100 percent of tuition and eligible charges for next school year. The Empower Illinois Scholarship Granting Organization will be operational and will have application information around December 15, 2017 and anticipates accepting applications January 2, Visit for up-to-date details. 10 Holy Ghost Says Farewell to Father Bill Mayer Father William Mayer, who ministered at Holy Ghost from the mid 90 s until 2005, has passed away. Father Mayer died on Saturday, December 9th at Addolorata Villa in Wheeling, Illinois. He is preceded in death by his parents Albert and Ruth and by his two sisters Patricia Haarer and Kathleen McEvilly. He is survived by his dear friend Sister Clare Fitzgerald, of Boston, MA. Fr. Mayer professed his first vows on August 19, 1947 at the Viatorian Novitiate in Chicago, IL and his final vows on August 19, 1950 at St. Joseph Church in Springfield, IL. He was ordained to the priesthood on February 2, 1956 at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C. Father Bill was educated by Viatorians, both at St. Patrick High School in Kankakee, where he graduated in 1945, and at St. Ambrose College in Davenport, IA where he earned his undergraduate degree in philosophy. He earned a master s degree in sociology from Catholic University of America in Washington in 1956 and an additional master s degree in Religious Formation from Manhattan College in New York City in Father Mayer s years of ministry began with 20 years of teaching social studies and religion at the high school level. His assignments took him to Spalding Institute in Peoria and St. Philip High School in Chicago, as well as his alma mater St. Patrick High School in Kankakee, from From he served at Bishop McNamara High School in Kankakee where he served as both a teacher and administrator, then went on to Griffin High School in Springfield, IL until He then turned to teaching adult religious education, first at St. Bede Priory in Eau Claire, WI then at the Franciscan Spiritual Center in LaCrosse. He also taught adults at the churches of St. Mary and St. Eulalia in Winchester, MA before returning to the Midwest, where he found new life serving the people at Holy Ghost Parish and where he remained until he retired in He lived his retirement years at the Viatorian Province Center Retirement Residence. Visitation was held on Wednesday, December 13th followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in the Province Center Chapel. Interment was at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside, IL. Holy Ghost remembers Father Mayer fondly. Please remember Father Mayer in your prayers. God bless you, Father Bill! Page 10

14 Epiphany Blessing of the Home Liturgically speaking, Epiphany is the high point of the Christmas season, so important that the Church gives it the rank of a solemnity. The word epiphany means a manifestation revealing or showing something we might otherwise miss. This feast celebrates the revelation of Jesus as the Messiah, and it tells us that he is the Savior of people from every corner of the world. For this reason artists through the centuries have portrayed the magi from different races, continents, and age groups. Matthew s Gospel (the only one with the magi s story), does not tell us their number, but because three gifts are mentioned, tradition has put the number at three. Tradition has supplied names: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar. It has also given them crowns-the Gospel does not call them kings, but wise men. The Blessing Before the main meal on Epiphany or when everyone is together during the following week, affix the attached sign above a central door in your home. The numbers at the beginning and end are for the New Year. The letters stand for the names of the wise men, and also for Chistus mansionem benedict, which means May Christ bless our home. After the sign is posted, the whole family says the following: LEADER: Peace be with this house and with all who enter! Let us all say: Blessed be God for ever! ALL: Blessed be God for ever. LEADER: May all who come to visit here, find open hearts and ready cheer, And find the face of Christ as well in every one who here does dwell; And may we all be doubly blessed to see his face in every guest.
