1 Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Parish IS GAMBING A SIN? Українська Католицька Церква Пресвятої Родини QUESTION: How then can you Catholics justify playing bingo? and in church yet! Answer: First of all, the stereotype of bingoplaying Catholics is really overblown. The vast majority of parishes don t even have a bingo night. Second, gambling is not in and of itself wrong. Read your Bible and you will not find gambling condemned anywhere in it. The average gambler loses money, unfortunately not everyone can be a winner, but the process is entertaining. So what gambling amounts to is paying money to be entertained, and there is nothing wrong with that as long as it is done within reason. And this is where maintaining this delicate balancing act can be difficult. Gambling becomes sinful only when one pays too much money for the entertainment. A person in a casino spending thousands of dollars that his family needs is definitely committing a sin, and the Church is very firm about this (see: Catechism of the Catholic Church #2413). It would likewise be sinful for a person to spend thousands of dollars his family needed on other forms of entertainment, too, like limited edition books, movies, collector s items, or whatever. However, if you can afford it, there is nothing wrong with spending a few dollars for an evening of entertainment, whether it is bingo, the movies, or something else. In fact, spending a few dollars on an evening playing bingo in a church basement with a bunch of fellow Christians is probably a more wholesome activity than spending the same amount of money going to see a typical Hollywood movie (so much smut and violence) or for that matter staying home and watching TV for free. It marks the beginning of a t i m e o f preparation for the spiritual journey of Lent, a time for us to draw closer to God through worship, prayer, fasting and acts of charity. Our preparation for Lent begins with a prayer for humility, the beginning of true repentance. Through repentance, we can find and return to the true order of things, a restoration of our spiritual vision that will guide us in a very difficult and challenging world. By entering Great Lent in humility and repentance, we can attain deeper communion with God as we receive His forgiveness and He blesses by guiding us to greater spiritual heights.

2 Publican an the Pharisee - Cont d from page1 The name for this Sunday is taken from the parable of our Lord Jesus Christ found in Luke 18: This is the story of two men, one a Pharisee, a member of a Jewish sect known for its diligent observance of the Law, and the other a Publican, a government official charged with the responsibility of collecting taxes. Both men enter the temple, and the Pharisee stands openly and prays, thanking God that he is not like other men, specifically extortioners, the unjust, adulterers, or even this tax collector. He then begins to list his religious accomplishments by stating, I fast twice a week, and I give tithes of all that I possess. In direct contrast to the pride of the Pharisee, the Publican goes to a place where he will not be noticed by others and beats his breast saying, God, be merciful to me a sinner!. Having told this story, Jesus affirms that it was the Publican who returned home justified and forgiven rather than the Pharisee. He states, Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted. The theme of this parable is repentance. Repentance is the door through which we enter Lent, the starting-point of the journey to Pascha. To repent signifies far more than self-pity or futile regret over things done in the past. The Greek term metanoia means change of mind. To repent is to be renewed, to be transformed in our inward viewpoint, to attain a fresh way of looking at our relationship with God and with others. The fault of the Pharisee is that he has no desire to change his outlook; he is complacent, self-satisfied, and so he allows no place for God to act within him. The Gospel depicts him as a man that is pleased only with himself who thinks that he has complied with all of the requirements of religion. But in his pride, he has falsified the meaning of true religion and faith. He has reduced these to external observations, measuring his piety by the amount of money he gives. The Publican, on the other hand, truly longs for a change of mind. He humbles himself, and his humility justifies him before God. He becomes, in the words of the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:3), poor in spirit. He acknowledges that he is a sinner, and he knows that salvation is only found in the mercy of God. Here we find an example of true humility, an essential aspect of repentance. A change of mind and the transformation of our lives can only happen when we humble ourselves before God, acknowledge our willingness to turn from sin, and receive His grace into our lives. The Pharisee goes to a very prominent place where others will see him. The positions of his hands indicate that he is addressing God by speaking of his stature and accomplishments. In contrast, the Publican enters and remains in a low place, far from the holiest parts of the temple. Following the words of Christ in Luke 18:14, the Publican has now been exalted in the kingdom of God because of his humility. He leaves the temple forgiven, and he shows that he remains open to the will of God. In contrast, the Pharisee leaves the temple unjustified, still in need of forgiveness. 5 The Bible clearly teaches the rightness of prayers for the dead in 2 Maccabees (12:40, 42, 44-45): Then under the tunic of every one of the dead they found sacred tokens of the idols of Jamnia, which the law forbids Jews to wear. And it became clear to all that this was why these men had fallen. [A]nd they turned to prayer, beseeching that the sin which had been committed might be wholly blotted out For if he were not expecting that those who had fallen would rise again, it would have been superfluous and foolish to pry for the dead [H]e made attonment for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin. St. Paul teaches this in a similar way: Otherwise, what do people mean by being baptized on behalf of the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized on their behalf? (1 Cor 15:29). This indicates prayer and fasting for the dead. The word baptism often symbolically refers to penances (Markl 10:38-39; Luke 3:16, 12:50). The apostle Paul also appears to be praying for the dead person, Onesiphorus, in 2 Timothy (1:16-18). The dead must be prayed for since they are still part of our family. Darren JOURNEY OF LENT The journey of Lent, is not just about giving up food, sweets, desserts, forms of entertainment, etc. The real work of Lent is an interior one. We are to look at our lives and see which areas, what attitudes, what actions, decisions, are preventing us from truly following Christ. We then begin to fast from those actions. This is the fast that Christ wants to purify our lives, to refocus upon Him, to establish new patterns, new habits in our lives which promote charity love of neighbour.
