The rich man in the parable found in this Sunday s Gospel is a somewhat intriguing character. He is a successful landowner and businessman who has a year with great earnings. As an ingenious entrepreneur, he decides to build larger storage bins for his overflow harvest. On the face of it, he might appear to be a biblical example of sound financial planning. Perhaps he should be featured among the Bible s Fortune 500. But, as with most of his stories, Jesus overturns our standard perceptions of things. He presents this successful businessman in a negative light. For one thing, he evidently ignored the demands of the Jewish Law to leave the gleanings of the harvest for the poor, the widow, the orphan and the immigrant. He takes it all for himself. He seems to have little concern for others. He has located the security of his life in the abundance of his carefully storedaway possessions. Thus he has missed out on what is really important, and he is actually quite poor in the sight of God. Continued on page 8

2 Many many thanks to all our Perogy Volunteers! It was most heartening to see so many dedicated volunteers come out to help with the many tasks in making our perogy project a success. Thank-you to all those who peeled potatoes. We were done in record time (before noon). It was also great to have the volunteers stay to clean-up on Wednesday. We had over 300 attend the perogy supper on Friday, November 28. Our gross revenue was $ and our expenses were under $ Because we had great help, we were finished with all the clean-up by 7:20 p.m. Many hands make light work especially for those who commit their time five 6-8 hour days each month to fulfill the work required to hold the perogy fundraiser. Our December orders are filled. Our next perogy supper will be on Friday, February 27. Please do not wait till the last minute to place your order. Orders received after the deadline (February 20) can not be filled. Home of Hope Fundraising Breakfast, Saturday, January 24, 10:00 a.m. This fundraising breakfast is sponsored by the UCWLC, Archeparchy of Winnipeg to help the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate (SSMI) in Lviv, Ukraine meet the needs of running the safe house for orphan girls who must leave the orphanage at age 16. Without this shelter these girls would have no where to go except the streets where they would fall prey to traffickers. Presently there are 20 girls residing at the safe house and all are enrolled in continuing education. Funds are needed to cover cost of food, clothing, educational resources (computers), sewing machines, large appliances (freezers, refrigerators, washing machines, dishwashers) and general house maintenance. (Please see the letter and poster in your last bulletin). Last year the tickets to the breakfast were sold out early and we were unable to accommodate people who waited till the last minute to purchase their tickets. Tickets are $25.00 each and are available every Sunday from Vicky Adams. Donation forms are in the narthex for those who wish to make a donation. The month of January is our turn to escort the residents of Holy Family Nursing Home to Divine Liturgy every Sunday. Volunteers are needed. A sign-up form is available in the narthex. The angels cost $5.00 to purchase. $1.50 will go towards the Marian Hour on CKJS which is heard daily at 10:30 p.m. and the remaining profit of $1.50 will be donated to help support the day to day upkeep of the orphan teenage girls at the Home of Hope in Lviv, Ukraine. 8 Continued from page 1 As Jesus says at the end of this story, you and I are called to become people who grow rich in what matters to God. We do that by consciously orienting our lives to God and to the justice and compassion revealed by Christ in the Gospel. This invitation to become wealthy in the eyes of God means recognizing our real treasures in life. Sometimes that only becomes clear to us at specific moments, as in my visit to that very poor family in Jamaica. Receiving their hospitality and watching them interact made me feel that they were wealthier than I was. This insight into what is really important for us comes at other moments too, like times of sickness or loss, and in moments of celebration like a wedding, a baptism or an anniversary. At moments like these the things that have enduring value are illumined: our relationship with God in Christ and the priceless gift of our faith; our commitments to our vocation, to spouses, children, family members and important friendships; the exercise of justice and compassion toward others, particularly those in need around us. Open to offers, contact the Parish office Dimensions: 144 in. long x 55.2 in. wide x 28 in. high Seminary Special Collection Appeal The seminary collection is based on the number of households in regular attendance on an average Sunday. For 2015 our parish has been assessed at $2,970. To date our seminary collection is $1,301, a shortfall of $1,669. We are appealing to our parishioners for a special donation to cover this shortfall. This is a parish responsibility to support our Ukrainian Catholic Seminary. Please make cheques payable to Holy Family Parish.

9 State of our Parish Dear Parishioners: Glory be to Jesus Christ! As you might know, our expenses have been increasing while our donations are decreasing. We also offer our thanks to everyone who volunteers and helps out with our main fundraiser. The revenue that we receive from our Perogy Suppers is what is helping meet our shortfalls in paying our day to day operation expenses. We have our monthly operating and utility bills. We also have maintenance and upkeep bills too. If we continue on this current path, perhaps in five years we will not have a parish. I am appealing for all our members to make Holy Family Parish part of your monthly commitment. We have never set donation amounts. We only ask that you give what you can. As the cost of living keeps rising, we also need your help. One of the benefits of donating to your Church family is that you will receive the benefit of a tax receipt at year end. Manitoba Hydro doesn t offer that! Many Protestant churches require their members to tithe 10% of their total income (i.e. $50,000 salary equals $5,000 to their church). We understand that expenses keep going up and our income doesn t always reflect this, however, in order to keep our Parish open, we need to increase our donations to keep up with our expenses. This is where Direct Deposit is a great option. It keeps Church donations consistent whether you are attending Sundays or away for a few weeks on a well deserved vacation. We have included the form (see next page) should you be interested. Just fill it out and place it in next week s collection basket or call our Parish Office for more details. Holy Family is our Church home. It is also our second family and source of support in times of need.
