A Samaritan woman came to draw water from the well and Jesus asked her for a drink. The woman, taken aback, questioned Jesus as to why He, a Jew, was asking her, a Samaritan, for a drink. Jesus does not directly answer the question, but continues to explain that if she knew who He was, she would be the one asking Him for a drink. He would give her fresh and "living" water. Misunderstanding His message, the woman again questions Him. Jesus explains that all who drink from the earthly water of the well will be thirsty again, but all who drink His water will never be thirsty. This is the most prominent moment in the story. 2 Icon of the Sunday of the Samaritan Woman (see icon on cover page) The icon of the Sunday of the Samaritan Woman depicts the biblical story of the Christ conversing with the woman at the well. Our Lord is shown sitting beside the well, speaking with and blessing the Samaritan woman. She is shown with her right hand outstretched toward Christ, indicating both her interest in what He is saying, and also as a sign of her faith and her efforts to bring others to hear what Christ has to say. In the background of the icon, the city is visible together with the Mount Gerazim. (cont d from cover page) Chasing earthly dreams and searching for happiness is essentially like a wild goose chase; there will always be that "something more" you need to have or that one thing that would make your life complete. Jesus says nothing in this world can satisfy you. Without Him, your life will never be complete. At this point, the woman is still taking His figurative speech literally. She asks for His water so she does not have to keep coming back to draw it. When Jesus tells her to go call her husband and come back she replies that she has none. Jesus reveals His prophesying abilities when He says she is right because she has had 5 husbands and the man she is currently with is not her husband. The woman acknowledges Him as a prophet and asks Him to confirm that according to the Jews, Jerusalem is the only place fit for worship. Jesus describes that this is a minor detail compared to what is to come or rather, what has come (speaking of Himself). He explains that there will be a time when her status in society and place of worship is insignificant. You should worship honestly as yourself, not influenced by the world around you. The woman says she believes in the coming of the Messiah, and when that happens, all will be explained to her. Jesus then declares that He is the Messiah and she does not have to wait any longer. The disciples returned to Jesus and the woman went back to town proclaiming what she had seen. This passage is about having faith in the Lord. If you look to Him for guidance and knowledge, He will give it to you. Putting your hope in the world will never satisfy you as it does when you put your faith in God. Jesus came to teach people about God and turn their faith from the world around them to Him. Instead of seeking comfort in earthly desires, true comfort may be found in God's gift of eternal life. Whatever pleasures you might find in the world, they amount to nothing when compared to the glory of the Lord.

5 UCWLC NEWS It is Holy Family's turn to provide a meal for the drop-ins at Welcome Home. As requested, we will be serving stew, dessert and buns for approximately 60 persons. The Holy Family UCWLC is co-ordinating this event and are inviting volunteers to donate a pail of stew (pails are provided) to be brought to the church anytime between 10:00 a.m to 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 20 & 21. We need 12 pails of stew. To date, 8 volunteers have signed up but we need 4 more. Please call Vicky Adams for information. A reminder that on Sunday, May 25 the Holy Family UCWLC will be holding a Tag Day after each Divine Liturgy. The monies collected from all the Tag Days from the various UCWLC Branches in our Archeparchy is used to support the many charities sponsored by the Womens' League. Thank-you for your contribution towards this Tag Day. Music award established to honour parishioner St.Lukes RC Parish in Maple Ridge B.C. is pleased to announce the Helen Nykoluk Memorial Music Award. This award has been established as a tribute to the memory of Helen s stewardship, her contribution to the parish music ministry and to the countless hours spent in making perogies for the parish fundraisers. The $ award will be given to a high school graduate for post graduate studies in music. The candidate must exemplify musical ability and an interest in choir direction at the parish level. John and Helen Nykoluk were active members of Holy Family Parish before they moved to B.C. Helen was a member of Holy Family choir and the UCWLC, John was on the Parish Council and their children Mark and Leslie were members of the Holy Family Youth and Sopilka Dance School. Helen passed away in St. Luke s parishioners through their donations have established this memorial award as a tribute to Helen s exemplary contribution to the parish.

6 The proper role of our diaspora: not to live for Ukraine, but to live by Fr. Michael Winn (excerpt of a Speech of His Beatitude Sviatoslav at the Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Institute Fundraiser, Toronto, May 2, 2014 ) Sometimes diasporas can become closed in on themselves. The diaspora of the Church of Kyiv must not be that kind of phenomenon. Sometimes diasporas look backwards so much at their ancestral homeland, that they forget about taking care of their own life and vibrancy. The diaspora of the Church of Kyiv, must not be like that. I can tell you that your brothers and sisters in Ukraine are deeply grateful to the Ukrainian diaspora in the West for all the support you have shown for decades, but especially in the last few months. We are even more grateful for the fact that you have become such a vital element of the leadership of various democracies like Canada and the United States, because you have helped these countries become the allies of the people of Ukraine in their struggle for freedom and human dignity. That is the proper role of our diaspora: not to live for Ukraine, but to live: to be a strong and lively link between the country that is your home and the country of your ancestry, whether that ancestry is ethnic or spiritual, because, as I have emphasized, there are many non-ukrainians who are members of the Church of Kyiv and that spiritual ancestry is even more important than ethnic ancestry. For us, the ancestry of Baptism is deeper than the ancestry of blood. You want to help Ukraine? You want to help the Church of Kyiv? Be strong. Be alive, right where you are. Make sure our Church your Church is dynamic, forward looking, life-giving. No one needs dead traditionalism. What we all need is a living Tradition. The theologian Martin Marty once famously remarked that tradition is the living faith that has come to us from those who have died, and traditionalism is the dead faith of those who are living. Perhaps we should say: of those who think they are alive. Cont d on next page

7 Cont d from previous page The Sheptytsky Institute has a motto: Serving for the Future, Leading with Tradition. I endorse that motto. Pope Francis reminds us that the Church needs servant leaders, not just liturgical functionaries. He asks us to leave the sacristy and go into the streets. At the maidan the Church went into the streets. Not to politicize the Church, but to engage society and to stand in solidarity and to serve, where servants were desperately needed. At the same time, the Sheptytsky Institute has been going into the streets of the media and the academy, helping the world to understand what was going on and what continues to happen in Ukraine, through the sometimes wearying work of continually studying in order to understand, and understanding in order to enlighten. The Church needs leaders: clergy and lay. Who will give us those leaders, equipped with a deep understanding of the living Tradition, in order to be able to faithfully and creatively adapt to ever-new situations? In Ukraine we have the Ukrainian Catholic University. In the diaspora you have the Sheptytsky Institute of Eastern Christian Studies. They are absolutely necessary for each other, and we you and I cannot do without them. Support this Institute. Ukraine needs to stand up and take care of itself. We are grateful for your help, every single instance of it, and we thank God for you. But for heaven s sake, please take care of yourself. Make sure that you thrive, rooted in a glorious past, yes, but also striving for a glorious future! You must not only survive, you need to thrive. We in Ukraine need you to do that. Your home country and the western world need you to do that. The Kingdom of God needs you to do that.

10 It s Funny How... Funny how we set our clocks to arise at 4:00am or 5:00am to be at the job by 7:30, yet when Sunday comes we can't get to church for 11:00am to praise the one who gave us the jobs! Funny how we call God our Father and Jesus our brother, but find it hard to introduce them to our family. Funny how small our sins seem, but how big their sins are. Funny how much difficulty some have learning the gospel well enough to tell others, but how simple it is to understand and explain the latest gossip about someone else. Funny how we can't think of anything to say when we pray, but don't have any difficulty thinking of things to talk about to a friend Funny how we are so quick to take directions from a total stranger when we are lost, but find it nearly impossible to take God's direction for our lives. Funny how people want God to answer their prayers, but refuse to listen to His counsel. Funny how people think they are going to Heaven but don't think there is a hell. Funny how it is okay to blame God for evil and suffering in the world, but it is not necessary to thank Him for what is good and pleasant. Funny how when something goes wrong, we cry, "Lord, why me?" but when something goes right, we think, "Hey, it must be me!" The priest was interrupted by a heckler as he spoke about Jonah. Do you really believe that Jonah was swallowed by a whale, the heckler shouted. I don t know, the priest replied. When I get to heaven, I ll ask him. What if he s not there? the heckler asked. In that case, said the priest, you ll have to ask him.

12 If you do not feel that you are in need of God s mercy then it is better not to go to Divine Liturgy Speaking at his general audience today, (2/12/14) Pope Francis said: Sometimes someone asks: Why bother going to church, the people who always go to Mass are sinners like the others. If you do not feel in need of God s mercy, if you do not feel you are a sinner, then it s better not go to Mass, because we go to Mass because we are sinners and we want to receive the forgiveness of Jesus, to participate in His redemption, His forgiveness. That I confess we say at the beginning is not a pro forma, is a true act of penance, I am a sinner and I confess. We have to go to Mass humbly, as sinners, and the Lord reconciles us. Pope Francis went on to say: We celebrate the Eucharist not because we are worthy, but because we recognise our need for God s mercy, incarnate in Jesus Christ I wish to reflect on how we live the Eucharist in our daily lives. The Pope said that the Eucharist affects the way we see others. So too the Eucharist brings us together with others young and old, poor and affluent, neighbours and visitors. The Eucharist calls us to see all of them as our brothers and sisters.
