2 Christmas message from His Beatitude Sviatoslav Most Reverend Metropolitans, Archbishops and Bishops, Very Reverend and Reverend Fathers, Venerable Religious and Monastics, Beloved Brothers and Sisters, in Ukraine and throughout the world Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord. (Luke 2:10-11) Христос Раждається! Christ is Born! Славіти Його! Let us glorify Him! With these angelic words from heaven, Christ s Church announces news of salvation. Today for us a Saviour has been born: the Lord descended to earth, appearing in a human body in the city of Bethlehem. This day heaven and earth rejoices, the entire human race rejoices in the knowledge that our Creator has not abandoned His creation, but He came to accept its fate as His own. He became man in order to share our human life: our pains and joys, our fears and insecurities. The Lord became one of us, reveals Himself as our Saviour and Redeemer. On the feast of Christ s Nativity, we rejoice in knowing that never again will we feel alone or abandoned. We celebrate that God is with us, that He loves us, and we see God s love incarnate in the newborn Christ Child, who gently rests in a hay-filled manger. The Mystery of the Birth of our Saviour reveals to us how God s greatness opens up to us through human frailty, how the humanly small and insignificant can become great in God! The Holy Gospel tells us that the Lord of the Universe was born in a family of refugees. At first, by Caesar s decree, and then because of the blood-thirst of King Herod, the Most Holy Family was forced to abandon their home and seek refuge among strangers. Yes, our God chose to be born as a refugee without a home! In these strange circumstances of our Saviour s birth, in addition to the wise men from the East, only those who were not ashamed to be with the needy, with exiles and the persecuted were granted the privilege to approach the Divine Babe. By opening to Him the doors of their hearts, of their home, by recognizing the sign of salvation in the Lord, who was born in a cave, these people were filled with divine joy in the midst of the darkness of night Knights of Columbus News Flash!! Also, thank you for your continued financial support, without it the Parish would not be able to pay its bills. Have a prayerful, peace-filled Christmas season and New Year filled with hope! - Fr Darren Kawiuk. For the Christmas mystery is found in the ability to enter into God s presence and encounter the newborn Christ by being able to be close: to be close to those who are weak and without protection, who suffer from cold and the lack of bare necessities. Ukraine has undergone a strange year in which everything was bigger than life: hope and despair, assuredness and disappointment, gains and losses. But also great was the fear, that Darkness could sense, seeing that our breakthrough towards Light could emerge victorious. And Darkness sent upon us pain and bloodshed, injury and even death, so that the people might recoil in the face of such suffering and return to the same path of silent and uncontested submission. There is no Ukrainian who did not take part in this test of Divine Providence, which still continues. In some ways today all of us find ourselves in the zone of risk, the zone of the Anti-terrorist operation. Similar to the shepherds, who on the place where they led their flock to pasture heard the song of angels in heaven and received the news of the birth of a Saviour, so too, each one of us, has his or her place of spiritual vigil, his guard post, where we all must fulfill our Christian and civic mission. And even if some have become tired and would prefer to avoid this choice, they nonetheless find the strength for the task. Only passivity plays into the hands of evil. This year our journey to Christmas led us along the path of the wounded and exiled. Our Church literally became a field hospital, set up in order to give refuge to the persecuted and to heal the wounds of the injured. But even after the Maidan, the Church did not cease to function as a hospital, for that is her vocation. Pope Francis reminds us of this: I see the Church as a field hospital after battle. None of us were ready for war, and yet it continues, uninvited it breaks into virtually every Ukrainian home, especially in the Eastern territories of our Land. There is a danger that the boundary of human sensitivity to the pain and suffering of one s neighbour will diminish. Christians know that apathy kills no less than Hrad missile launchers. The task before the state is to wisely resolve the problem of aid to those citizens who have suffered, while the task before every Christian is to be close, to accompany those who are in dire need. This Christian unity with those in need, which we call solidarity, is what makes us strong. In it are revealed and through it we receive the power of the incarnate God, the action of the Saviour, who was born in order to make us free and undefeatable in God. In the time of Christmas each one of us looks at the sky in the hope of seeing the light of the star of Bethlehem. For the New Year promises not to be easier nor our choice to be simpler. Our greatest task for 2015 is to embark on the path of development of civilization and a life of dignity. For this we must clothe ourselves in a godly, not worldly manner, by renouncing all unworthy compromises with the evil one. This applies to each one of us even to the one who considers himself or herself as the least in this world. The task of directing one s life towards good also makes great civil sense, for when every Ukrainian man and woman will change, the country will also change.
4 Together we must adorn ourselves with effective government structures, which will finally cease to be structures of sin. For government can be a blessing, if it becomes service. Both tasks are impossible to fulfil if we don t experience doubt, don t make mistakes, don t step back. Let us not carry the pride of perfection, but rather let us admit before God our weaknesses and ask in humility: O God, help me in my weakness! A humble person does not lose faith in his strength, for, in the words of Ivan Franko, one feels on his shoulder the hand of the Lord. Therefore, let us remember that despair, disappointment, the impulsive desire to rid ourselves of those, who have not fulfilled our expectations these are the instruments, which allow Darkness to most effectively reacquire its lost positions. Let us not help it undermine our chances for success. Failing to always do everything is not the problem. Allowing our failures to make us lose heart is! We have before us one task, about which we should never have any doubt. That task is to pray. The Maidan was victorious because people prayed, fervently and sincerely. Today let us not allow for a certain being used to war to weaken the intensity of our prayers. Let us direct all the strength of our soul, so that in our families and communities prayers for Ukraine will continue to be raised unceasingly, so that our beloved land might be filled with the light of faith, as was the poor cave of Bethlehem, that our hearts might be purified, that a new life may be born. And then, having received God s blessings, we will be the happiest people on earth. In the dark night of insecurity and fear, let our ancient koliada dispel all sadness and every worry... With this Christmas greeting I seek to visit each home, filled with good people, who receive the newborn God and Saviour and rejoice with the feast of Christ s Nativity! Today we extend our Christmas greetings to our soldiers, who celebrate this great feast in cold frontline trenches and shelters, with their chests forward, ready to defend their nation. With festive wishes we greet all those who lost their home and miss the warmth of their families, that all may be good and well in their lives. With the song of angels announcing peace on earth and glory in the highest let us today visit those, who mourn the loss of family and friends, who suffer from their battle wounds, who are in captivity or imprisoned. As in this Christmas night joy overcomes sorrow and heavenly light darkness, so in his Nativity let our Saviour fill us with the strength of his victory, of good over evil, of truth over untruth, and may a heavenly peace overcome war. To all our faithful in Ukraine and throughout the world I send you my deepest heartfelt wishes for a merry Christmas, a tasty kutia, and a resounding koliada. Christ is born! Christ is Born! Славіти Його! Let us glorify Him! Jesus is born in a family with challenges Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, MT 1:18-23 It is interesting to reflect on the challenges faced by Joseph and Mary regarding their betrot hal and marriage. We are perhaps more familiar with the crisis the Holy Family faced regardi ng accommodations the night when Jesus was born. It is important to keep these circumsta nces in mind when we look at the challenges families face today. This is precisely where Ch rist is born. God is with us, in the midst of the challenges every family faces. The recent Papal Synod focused on this. The Holy Father gathered bishops and laity in October 2014 to prayerfully reflect on the challenges families face today as they evangelize one another. The details may differ somewhat, but the stress on relationships, expectations and the struggle to uphold the dignity of every human person remains paramount for every family. Patience in mixed marriages, healing addictive lifestyles, caring for elderly, finding meaningful employment for immigrants, providing pastoral care for the divorce, separated and abused are just some of these challenges. However, the joy of experiencing gospel values is found in the family where members address these needs with compassion, making visible Christ who is among us through one another. These expressions of compassion are in fact encounters with Christ for Christ is among us! Jesus is born in a parish with challenges This is true for the families that are the basis for our parishes today. This is true for our parish families that have reflected on being vibrant. Patriarch Sviatoslav, in his pastoral letter entitled The Vibrant Parish A place to encounter the living Christ, calls all of us to make this a reality in our Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. We will bring the fruit of our reflection and best practices in order to share them with others at the Patriarchal Sobor planned in Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine, this coming August in In particular, we prayerfully keep in mind the challenges families and parishes face with the ongoing war in Ukraine. Efforts to defend human dignity have had devastating consequences, yet in sharp contrast, people continue to discover the deeper joy of doing God s will.
6 In some cases ecclesiastical property has been taken over by pro-russian forces. However, prayerful expressions of hope abound. Providing basic needs of water, food and shelter become concrete actions of evangelization and parishes have never been more vibrant. Faithful from around the globe give material, financial and spiritual support to those in Ukraine who are at the center of our people defending human dignity. Pope Francis says this clearly in his Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium The parish is the presence of the Church in a given territory, an environment for hearing God s word, for growth in the Christian life, for dialogue, proclamation, charitable outreach, worship and celebration. So then, who are today s shepherds and kings that come to encounter Christ at your parish? Let us look to the Mother of God, the Theotokos, for inspiration and guidance since every parishioner and each parish is called to give birth to Christ. May our parishes be mangers that provide a place for all people to encounter the living Christ. This Christmas, Pope Francis, together with all your bishops and pastors, pray for you, your families and your parishes, that they be places to encounter the living Christ, for the wise, the poor and all those who face challenges in life. We resolve to work harder, to shoot for higher goals and standards and the oldie but a goodie, we resolve to lose weight and get into better shape. It s good to set goals for ourselves through resolutions, but we should keep in mind to set realistic ones. Secondly, we should take little steps as opposed to big ones. If we set our sights for a goal that is too high, chances are we eventually become discouraged and give up all together. There definitely is some truth to the old saying slow and steady wins the race. As Ukrainian Catholics we need to set practical goals. We need to make resolutions to turn away from the old ways that pull us from or compete with worshipping our God. Like anything else, the old saying of slow and steady is applicable here. Permit me to share with you a prayer on how we can all make the New Year better: Help me, O Lord, to use this new year wisely; To bear with race burdens I must beat; To be a little kinder to my neighbour; To take time out each day in silent prayer. To move a bit more slowly on my journey; To look up now and then to see Your sky; To share my worldly goods among the needy; To do my part for peace - at least try. I ll do the best I can, but stay beside me. Correct me when I m wrong; allay my fear. I know that if You re there to help and guide me, I m bound to have a good and happy year. As we conclude the old year of 2014 and look with hopeful optimism towards 2015, I wish you all a peaceful, healthy and happy New Year and God s blessings in keeping your New Christian resolutions. Promises for the New Year PROMISE to be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. PROMISE to make all your friends feel that there is something special about them. PROMISE to look at the sunny side of everything, and make your optimism come true. PROMISE to think only of the best, work only for the best and to make the best come true. PROMISE to be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. PROMISE to forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. PROMISE to wear cheerful expressions at all times and give every person you meet a smile. PROMISE to give so much effort to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. PROMISE to be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble in our life. As we pray in the Psalm (76:11) Make vows to the LORD your God and fulfill them. Let us not be afraid! Let us go forward trusting in the Lord and rightfully hoping for the support and encouragement of our fellow parishioners.
7 A Legend about "KUTIA" Merry Christmas to all our parishioners and also our parishioners who will be following the Julian calendar when celebrating the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus. On the eve of this holy day (Dec. 24 th /Jan. 6 th ), it is traditional for families to gather and partake in a special meal consisting of twelve meatless dishes. The first course consists of a specially prepared dish of boiled wheat, poppy seed and honey. Every wonder why? What's so special about it? Besides being a tasty appetizer to a delicious meal, it's ingredients are a beautiful symbol and instrument to relate to us God's continued love for His children. In the spirit of the season, please allow me to share with you the story of how this sweet dish of boiled wheat or "Kutia" came into being... "When Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, they sentenced themselves to the loss of paradise. God, however, promised to help them in their difficult new life and gave them a gift of three little sacks which held food for both body and soul. And He said: "The first sack holds faith, the second - hope and the third - love. You, Adam, are to carry the first two and Eve is to carry the third." When Adam and Eve looked into the sacks, they saw that the first had grains of Wheat. And the Lord said: "When you sow these grains of wheat, they will be nourishment for you and for those who will come after you." Adam opened the second sack and there he found poppy seeds. "These poppy seeds", said the Lord, "will awaken in you a hope that there is no end to My mercy." Then Eve opened the third sack and there she found honey. "This honey" said the Creator, "was made by a bee. She shall sweeten your hard-earned bread. And the honey will remind you of the love which shall bring joy to the soul and will lead you to Me. Take care of these gifts and do not be greedy for others." Thousands of years have passed since mankind received these gifts from God. The grains of wheat and poppy seeds put into the soil returned to be re-used hundreds of times and the honey sweetened the people's bread. To show their gratitude to God, man made a candle from the wax that the bee collected and lit it for the glory of God. And so it is that every year Ukrainians prepare this special dish, using all three of these gifts. They call it 'KUTIA" and even the poorest of households serve it on Christmas Eve. So the gifts of Wheat, poppy and honey - faith, hope and love are with us till this day! Christmas Prayer and Blessing Loving Father, help us remember the birth of Jesus that we may share in the song of the angels, the gladness of the shepherds, and the worship of the magi. Close the door of hate and open the door of love all over the world. Let kindness come with every gift and good desires with every greeting. Deliver us from evil by the blessing which Christ brings, and teach us to be merry with clear hearts. May the Christmas morning make us happy to be thy children, and the Christmas evening bring us to our beds with grateful thoughts, forgiving and forgiven, for Jesus sake. Amen! I hope and pray you have a joyous Christmas as we bask in the glow of God s awesome love. May the peace of the Christ Child fill your hearts and the grace of God overwhelm you with joy. May your travels be safe and your homecomings be happy. God bless and take care. Merry Christmas to all parishioners of Holy Family Parish. Celebration of faith, love and joy. - Fr Darren Kawiuk Christmas is the season of celebrating the fact that God became man and descended into the world. Christmas is a celebration of faith, hope, love, joy, peace on earth and good will among all people. What is the sense of all the gifts, the Christmas trees and the colorful lights in our homes if we cannot love each other and reach out to touch someone who is in distress or lonely in life? The best gift that we can give to someone is the love of God, a total and unconditional love. How joyful and grateful we should feel with the coming of Christ Our God into the world. Come, let us rejoice in Him. Rejoice, Christ is born, and God is revealed amongst us.
