1 Sunday, April 27, 2014 in Rome On Divine Mercy Sunday, April 27, Popes John XXIII and John Paul II will be canonized in Rome, Pope John Paul ll Pope Francis today chose April 27, 2014, as the canonization date for Popes John Paul II and John XXIII, a move that sets the stage for one of the most unusual and significant events of modern church history. Proclaiming as saints two of his predecessors taps into some deep populist sentiments among Catholic faithful. Yet it also raises questions Pope John XXlll about the saint making process and the relationship between sainthood and papal performance. The date chosen by Pope Francis makes sense. From a practical point of view, it gives Polish pilgrims in particular an opportunity to travel to Rome at a time of year when roads will presumably be free of snow and ice. April 27 is also Divine Mercy Sunday, which Pope John Paul made a church-wide feast to be celebrated a week after Easter. The pope died on the vigil of Mercy Sunday in Last July, Pope Francis approved a second miracle attributed to Blessed John Paul II s intercession, clearing the way for his canonization. At the same time, in a surprise move, Francis proposed that Blessed John XXIII be canonized at the same time, even though a similar second miracle was lacking. Francis had a number of reasons for taking this unusual step. For one thing, the church is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council, convened by John XXIII. For another, the new pope has clearly found inspiration in the vision and style of John XXIII, the much-loved Italian who was pope from I m convinced the pope also wants the dual canonization to be a unifying event, demonstrating that diverse models of holiness have a home in the Catholic Church. 2 PASTORAL LETTER OF THE UKRAINIAN CATHOLIC BISHOPS OF CANADA ON THE OCCASION OF THE RESURRECTION OF OUR LORD 2014 To the Very Reverend Clergy, Monastic and Religious Sisters, Seminarians and Lay Faithful of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canada: Christ is Risen! Indeed He is Risen! But we were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel [Lk. 24:21] Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ! - The words quoted at the beginning of this letter were spoken by two of Christ s disciples as they fled Jerusalem. Dismayed upon witnessing the crucifixion, death and burial of Jesus, they did not recognize the Risen Lord when he caught up with them on their journey. They had been told that Jesus had risen from the dead but there seemed to be doubt in their hearts that such news was really true. In these recent times our hearts and minds have been focused on the turmoil in our ancestral land of Ukraine. Indeed not only we, but many throughout the world have been caught up in the struggles of our brothers and sisters as they fight to defend the freedom of their native land. Their struggle against sin and injustice has been echoed in the readings and themes of the Great Lent services. And we too, like the disciples of Christ, having witnessed these difficult times, may find it hard to rejoice in th e resurrection of the Lord. Rather, we are searching for comfort in our fear and sorrow. Where can the people of Ukraine turn for support and guidance on their journey through these uncertain times? How can they rejoice in the resurrection of the Lord? As the Risen Lord walked with his disciple on their way to Emmaus, he opened their hearts and minds by explaining to them God s plan for humanity and the role Jesus carried out in this divine plan. Jesus said to the disciples: Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and enter into his glory? [Lk. 24:26] In other words the journey to the resurrection to eternal life leads all of us through the valley of human suffering. As we listened to the news reports from Ukraine, we often heard in the background the prayers and hymns of the faithful. We saw photos of priests holding high the holy cross in the midst of confrontation. We caught glimpses of sacred icons and banners standing firm against weapons and guns. And we witnessed a tent made into a chapel providing a place of prayer in the midst of turmoil. Indeed God has been with his people! he final sign by which the disciples recognized Jesus was in the breaking of the bread the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. At that point the Risen Lord then disappeared from their midst, but by then they had found the needed spiritual hope to renew their lives. They then declared: Were not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us on the way and opened the scriptures to us? [Lk. 24:32] Dearly Beloved in Christ! - This year as we gather to celebrate the resurrection of the Lord, let us find in this celebration the gift of hope for our lives a nd in the lives of those we hold dear. Let us hold aloft our faith in the Risen Lord as our sign of victory over the turmoil and despair that a world void of God s love can only provide. Let us chant, Christ is Risen as a call of strength and support to all, especially our brothers and sisters in Ukraine, and a reminder that the Risen Lord is always with us. Lawrence Huculak OSBM About the Icon of the Resurrection The joyous event of the glorious Resurrection is expressed in Orthodox Iconography with the Descent of the Lord into Hades. The icon on the jacket of this book is a detail of a fresco by Manuel Panselinos (1295 or 1313 A.D.) in the Protaton Church at Karyes, Mt. Athos, Greece. The Lord is depicted with bright garments within a transparent and interrupted circular "glory" that follows the contour of the crossengraven crown of light around His head. The "glory" is faintly noticeable above His head. The Lord, having descended into Hades with authority, is seen with a firm footing and a powerful stance upon the gates of Hades, fallen in the shape of an X. In His left hand, Christ is holding a huge Cross, the symbol of victory. With His right hand (where "the mark of the nails" is obvious, as well as on His feet) Christ is raising out of the cave of Hades the forefather Adam, who symbolizes the human race, with a vigorous and unilateral motion. As a result of this movement, the garment of the triumphant Christ is shown as being blown upwards by the wind. Together with Adam, Eve also stretches forth her arms in a beseeching manner. Behind them and a little higher is St. John the Forerunner, who is indicating the Lord. The space is completed with the righteous Abel, a young, beardless man with a long shepherd's staff and an ecstatic expression. In the dark cave of Hades, "the locks of death," the age-old bars and chains are seen as if shattered by a supernatural power. At the top of the trapezoid composition two angels are bending over behind the craggy peaks and are sharing in the triumph of the cosmic and eschatological victory of the Theanthropos Lord.

Christ is risen from the dead, and by His death He conquered death and to those even in the grave He grants life! Starting on the Feast of Pascha and lasting until the Vespers for Holy Spirit Monday (the day after Pentecost), in honour and in celebration of the Death and Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, we do not kneel for any prayers or services either in the church or at home. Easter prayer and blessing Christ is risen! Nothing more really need be said. Nothing in the history of this world has had such an impact or effect than the Death and Resurrection of our Lord. We cry one to another now: Brother! Sister! And we embrace each other because of the joy of the resurrection. May we all know and experience this joy throughout all of Pascha indeed, through all the days of our lives as we, together, journey home to the Kingdom of our God. Christ is risen! Христос воскрес! It is in an uproar, for it is now made captive. Hell took a body, and discovered God. It took earth, and encountered Heaven. It took what it saw, and was overcome by what it did not see. O death, where is thy sting? O Hades, where is thy victory? Christ is Risen, and you, O death, are annihilated! Christ is Risen, and the evil ones are cast down! Christ is Risen, and the angels rejoice! Christ is Risen, and life is liberated! Christ is Risen, and the tomb is emptied of its dead; for Christ having risen from the dead, is become the first-fruits of those who have fallen asleep. To Him be Glory and Power forever and ever. Amen!

6 Easter is officially called Pascha In the Byzantine Churches the feast of Easter is officially called Pascha, which means the Passover. It is the new Passover of the new and everlasting covenant foretold by the prophets of old. It is the eternal Passover from death to life and from earth to heaven. It is the Day of the Lord proclaimed by God s holy prophets, the day which the Lord has made for his judgment over all creation, the day of His final and everlasting victory. It is the Day of the Kingdom of God, tile day which has no night for its light is the Lamb (Rev 21:22-25). The celebration of Easter in the Byzantine Churches, therefore, is once again not merely an historical re-enactment of the event of Christ s Resurrection as narrated in the gospels. It is not a dramatic representation of the first Easter morning. There is no sunrise service since the Easter Matins and the Divine Liturgy are celebrated together in the first dark hours of the first day of the week in order to give people the experience of the new creation of the world, and to allow them to enter mystically into the New Jerusalem which shines eternally with the glorious light of Christ, overcoming the perpetual night of evil and destroying the darkness of this mortal and sinful world: Shine! Shine! O New Jerusalem! The glory of the Lord has shone upon you! Exult and be glad O Zion! Be radiant O Pure Theotokos, in the Resurrection of your son! This is one of the main Easter hymns in the Byzantine Churches. It is inspired by Isaiah s prophecy and the final chapters of the Book of Revelation, for it is exactly the New Creation, the New Jerusalem, the Heavenly City, the Kingdom of God, the Day of the Lord, the Marriage Feast of the Lamb with his Bride which is celebrated and realized and experienced in the Holy Spirit on the Holy Night of Easter in the Church. SUNDAY OF THOMAS - April 27th Manifesting the brightness of Your divinity, You appeared even though the doors were closed, O Lord. Standing in the midst of Your disciples, You uncovered Your side and showed them the wounds of Your hands and feet, delivering them from the sadness that had overcome them. You spoke to them clearly and said: As you see, my friends, I have assumed flesh; I am not a pure spirit. You spoke to the disciple who had doubted and asked him to touch Your wounds, saying: Explore My wounds and doubt no longer. The disciple touched You with his hand and discovered both divinity and humanity; filled with fear, he cried out in faith: My Lord and my God, glory to You! Touch My side with your hand, O Thomas; feel the traces of the nails, be no longer unbelieving, but believing, said Christ. When Thomas touched the Lord, he cried out in a loud voice: You are my Lord and my God; glory to You! 7 Water Monday and Water Tuesday (Поливанний понедiлок) Another Bright Week tradition is Water Monday and Water Tuesday, when after Divine Liturgy, having exited the Temple, the young people (and young at heart) energetically throw water on each other. This practice also has its sociological roots in Ukraine's pre-christian history when pouring water upon each other was a rite of purification. Yet again, as properly deconstructed, the ontologically prior meaning become clear: it is a symbolic reminder of the Faithful being Baptized in Water and the Spirit. As we sing during the Divine Liturgy of Bright Week, in place of the Trisagion: All You who have been Baptized in Christ have put on Christ. Alleluia! On Bright Monday, after Divine Liturgy, the most ancient of Processions are held. Clergy and Faithful process around the Temple. They stopping at the four corners to proclaim the Resurrection Gospel to the four directions - cf. the Great Commission of the Risen Lord to "Go, therefore, make disciples of all nations; baptise them in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit..." On Bright Tuesday, after Divine Liturgy, the Paschal Procession is made to the Church cemetery for the celebration of "Radonitsa". We process carrying with us the Paschal Foods (blessed on Pascha). After a short Paschal Memorial Service, we have a Paschal and Festal Meal right there in the cemetery - sharing the blessed Paschal bread, wine, meat, etc. The Procession winds all through the cemetery, lead by the Processional Cross, incensations, etc., singing the Paschal Tropar & Versicles. - passing by every grave. The priest may greets every single person buried there by name and announce to them: "Christ is Risen!" On Thomas Sunday (the Sunday after Pascha and the end of Bright Week), the Artos is again blessed (it is blessed once on Pascha and then again, with a different blessing, on Thomas Sunday). Then it is brought to the "Sviatchene" the Holy Paschal Meal, wherein the entire parish community participates. Serving on the Parish Pastoral Council The purpose of the Pastoral Council is to represent the parishioners of Holy Family Parish, to raise pastoral issues, and to advise the pastor in determining priorities, establishing plans, and setting goals for the parish. The Pastoral Council fulfills its purpose in the following ways: 1. By responding to the needs of Holy Family parishioners. 2. By a prayerful process that includes the setting of goals and objectives on an annual basis and or periodic based upon an assessment of the varying needs of the parishioners. The Pastoral Council will act only with the approval of the Pastor. Ordinarily this approval occurs in the normal course of discussion within Pastoral Council meetings. When, in the judgment of the pastor, the Pastoral Council is departing from the norms of Church law, the teachings of the Church, he is obliged to clarify points of law and policy for the Council, and, when necessary, withhold approval. The pastor is the administrator and chief executive officer of the parish. The other members of the Pastoral Council represent the parishioners in identifying the needs of the parish. Both recognize their shared responsibilities and distinct, yet mutual roles in fulfilling the mission of the parish. They work together for Holy Family Parish. In the final analysis, however, administration of the parish and its affairs is the prerogative of the pastor. This style of leadership demonstrates a spirit of openness and trust, a bond of mutual respect, and a solid grounding in facts and prayerful reflection on the needs of the Parish. It requires an understanding of the proper roles of the pastor and the Pastoral Council. The pastor, as the pastoral leader and executive officer of the parish, is the key person on the Pastoral Council. The other Pastoral Council members together complement the pastor by serving in an advisory role.
