2 Христос Раждається! Christ is Born! There is so much more than meets the eye. Dear Parishioners, This is the last week. The countdown has begun. We are in the midst of the last few days in which we may greet each other with Христос Раждається!, Christ is Born! The 40 day Nativity liturgical concludes with the Feast of the Presentation on February 2. During these forty days, we have celebrated three special holy days with special connections with our Saviour. On the feast of the Nativity, (Christmas) we celebrated the birth of Jesus, the second person of the Holy Trinity. In other words, God became one of us (the Incarnation) in order to save us by facing with us all our challenges. The second major feast day which we celebrated on New Year s Day was the Circumcision of our Lord. On this day, the new born baby was given his name. It must be noted that this name was not a gift given by his parents, Joseph and Mary. It was a name given by God and revealed to Joseph and Mary by an angel. Therefore, it can be said that the name is Divine. This certainly gives us an insight of who Jesus is. The third feast day that we have celebrated within these forty days was the Baptism of Our Lord in the Jordan River (Theophany). Among the many insights that this feast brings to us, we are reminded that this is the day that Our Lord s Mission begins, the Mission to save all of us. Hopefully, with this brief glimpse of these special forty days we realize that there is so much more than meets the eye. These forty days may be seen as a gift of time, a spiritual opportunity to let us meditate on these great events, to grow in understanding, allowing their infinite meanings to enter into our minds and hearts in a new way. It is interesting to note that the 40 day Nativity liturgical cycle concludes just before another feast, the Presentation. On this feast, we bless candles. The flame of a candle always pushes away darkness. It is a great reminder that the mission of Jesus was to push away darkness once and for all so that we may be saved. As we prepare to leave the Nativity liturgical cycle, as we continue to live each day to the best of our abilities, let us try to remember that there is always more than meets the eye. 4 Our parish renewal program, Awaken, could be described as resolutions looking for solutions. The data that has been gathered by way of our parish survey and from the special parish meeting that was held on October 21, and a second meeting which involved catechism teachers and parents on November 4, contain many good ideas, suggestions, and hopes. From this data, resolutions, we must proceed to solutions. The information ( resolutions ) gathered have been compiled into the following 5 Strategic Priorities. ENGAGING FAMILIES, YOUTH AND CHILDREN How/what can we do for kids, youth, young adults and young families? OUTREACH AND COMMUNITY Includes evangelization and social justice BUILDING THE PARISH COMMUNITY How can we educate and inform parishioners of the church operations? MAKING PEOPLE FEEL AT HOME Making the parish a welcome place for all IMPROVING COMMUNICATION IN OUR PARISH What can we do to improve communication with parishioners? What is the next step? Five task committees, one for each of the above mentioned strategic priorities must be formed. By being part of these committees, our parishioners can help move the process from resolution to solution. 8 Presentation (Encounter) of Our Lord February 2 On this Feast day, we see Jesus forty days old, carried into the temple in Jerusalem by Mary and Joseph, to be recognized as God s Messiah by the aged Simeon and Anna. In obedience to the Law of Moses, the Lord Jesus, the first-born, was presented in the Temple by his Blessed Mother and his foster father. Mary and Joseph respected the Mosaic Law by offering the sacrifice prescribed for the poor: a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons. In Jerusalem at that time there lived two venerable elderly people Simeon and Anna. Their lives were dedicated to prayer and fasting and so their strong religious spirit rendered them able to recognize the Messiah. Simeon, who was just and devout, had been visited by an angel of the Lord who foretold him that he would not see death before seeing the Messiah born of the Virgin. Led by the Holy Spirit into the temple on the day that the holy family brought the Child Jesus to fulfill the law, Simeon took the Child into his arms and blessed God by saying: Lord, now let Your servant depart in peace, according to Your word; for my eyes have seen Your salvation, which You have prepared before the face of all people, a light of revelation to the gentiles, and the glory of Thy people Israel (Luke 2:29-32). In the figure of the venerable Simeon, Jesus presentation in the temple, also reminds us that prayer and contemplation are not just a waste of time or an obstacle to charity. On the contrary, time could not be better spent than in prayer as true Christian charity is a consequence of a solid interior life. Only those who pray and offer penance, like Simeon and Anna, are open to the breath of the Spirit. They know how to recognize the Lord in the circumstances in which He manifests Himself because they possess an ample interior vision, and they have learned how to love with the heart of the One whose very name is Charity. This is another epiphany celebration insofar as the Christ Child is revealed as the Messiah through the canticle and words of Simeon and the testimony of Anna the prophetess who was also in the temple that day. This is also a second Annunciation to Mary. Simeon s prophecy of Mary s sufferings tells her of the actual historical situation in which the Son is to accomplish his mission: namely, in misunderstanding and sorrow. The archangel s announcement was a fount of incredible joy because it pertained to Jesus messianic royalty and the supernatural character of His virginal conception. The Feast Day of the Encounter is the meeting of the Old and New Covenants. Jesus is the fulfillment of the Old Covenant and gives to us the New Covenant through the Eucharist. The announcement of the elder in the temple spoke of the Lord s work of redemption that He would complete associating Himself through suffering to His Mother. Therefore, there is a strong Marian dimension to this feast; it is also referred to as the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This refers to the other aspect of the presentation that consists of the ritual purification of Jewish women after they had given birth. In Mary s case this purification was not necessary, but it indicates the renewal of her total offering of herself to God for the accomplishment of His Divine Plan. This feast concludes the celebration of the Nativity and with the offerings of the Virgin Mother and the prophecy of Simeon, the events now point toward Easter. Christ is the light of the nations, hence the tradition of the blessing of candles.
