2 ALL SAINTS SUNDAY The Sunday after Pentecost Sunday is dedicated to the memory of All Saints. The commemoration of All Saints Sunday is placed just after Pentecost Sunday in order to remind us of what the power of the Holy Spirit can do in our lives. The Saints were - and continue to be - those individuals who allow the Holy Spirit to be active in their lives Saint Paul tells us that when the Holy Spirit is alive and active in our lives we will experience love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23) On the other hand, if the Spirit is absent from our lives, there will be hatred, rivalry, jealousy, out bursts of fury, acts of selfishness, dissension, occasions of envy, and the like. (Galatians 5:21) Interesting, at one time the words S a i n t a n d C h r i s t i a n w e r e interchangeable. In the early Church, Sainthood was not considered to be an exceptional way of life. Sainthood was expected of every Christian. Saints were not considered to be perfect humans, rather Saints were simply considered to be forgiven sinners who tried their best to follow after Christ. Once there was a man who had an unpleasant ride in a taxicab. Upon leavin g the cab, he thanked the driver for a good ride. Another passenger asked him why he would thank the driver when the ride was, in fact, awful. The man replied, Perhaps if I compliment him, the ride for the next passenger will be good! Let us continue to share the fruits of the Holy Spirit with one another! 4 Attitude The longer I live the more I realize the impact of attitude on our lives. Attitude to is more important than facts, It s more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failure, than success, than what people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill, It will make or break a company, a church, or a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day, We cannot change the past. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is to play on one string we have, andthat is our attitude, Life is 10% what happens to us and 90% how we react to it. 5 SUMMER VACATION When you go on vacation, please don t forget that the church still relies on your contributions. The church bills do not go on vacation. The summer months are most difficult due to the decrease in attendance. Your absence on any Sunday does not negate your obligation to support your home parish. Pre-Authorized Giving Program We wish to remind everyone that you may sign up for pre-authorized giving anytime of the year. Pre-Authorized Giving Program allows parishioners to make their regular Sunday offering. The Program is an option, not a requirement. It is being widely used in many other parishes and we want to make the Program available to all parishioners who would like to take advantage of it. This is a very convenient way to support your parish even in your absence. Forms are available in the narthex. They can be brought to the parish office. or mailed. Please be assured that all information is strictly confidential. Summer Bulletins July and August Church Bulletins will be published every 2 weeks starting July 6th through to August 24th. Regular weekly bulletins will start August 31st.

10 Father s Day Prayer Lord, please bless our fathers, these men who mean so much to us, who are greatly responsible for who we are and who we are becoming. Bless them for having the courage to do what s necessary to keep us out of trouble, for making us do the right thing, for helping us build our character, even when it makes us angry; and bless them for pushing us to do our best, even when they just want to love us. Bless our fathers for being our protectors, for leading us through stormy times to safety, for making us believe that everything will be all right and for making it so. Bless our fathers for quietly making a living to provide for those they love most, for giving us food, clothing, shelter and other necessary and not so necessary material things, for unselfishly investing time and money in us that they could have spent on themselves. Bless our fathers, Lord, for saving some energy for fun, for leading us on adventures to explore the outer reaches of ourselves, for making us laugh, for being our playmates and our friends. Bless them for being our secure foundation, our rock, for holding on tight to us...until it s time to let us go. We look up to, our role models, our heroes, our fathers. Amen. Today we wish all the fathers, grandfathers, soon to be fathers, stepfathers, and godfathers, a very happy Father's Day. The gift of our earthly fathers is just that, a gift from God. As we remember our fathers today, both living and deceased, we thank God for this gift of His love. Fathers have a very important part in God's plan for us. He uses them to show His love for us. He uses them to watch over and guide us. Let us pray that all fathers will look to God as their example of how to care for their children with love and patience. 12 Leadership A leader is a person who shows the way on a common journey. Sometimes, a leader will show the way by: going before, like a shepherd leading a flock. The most respected and effective leaders are grounded in humility. They possess authenticity and integrity and they have a clear vision for which they are consistent and persistent. We see examples of these leadership qualities in the Old Testament Abraham, Moses, and King David. Although each profoundly affected Judaism and Christianity, they were also burdened with painful flaws in their public or private lives. The same can be said for more recent leaders like Mother Theresa, Ghandi and Nelson Mandella. From the plethora of transformational leaders over the past 2000 years, none can be said to have led without some inadequacies. Only Jesus led without fault. His attributes of humility, authenticity and vision have vaulted over the centuries and remain as relevant today as ever! Humility: Jesus pointed out the importance of humility in His teachings. He did not emphasize strength and force to lead, but rather meekness and humility. He said to bless our enemies, to pray for them, to do good to them, (Luke 6:27) He said we should emulate the tax collector who beat his breast asking for God s mercy. He said: for anyone who exalts himself shall be humbled and he who humbles himself shall be exalted. (Luke 18:14) During the Last Supper, He washed His Disciples feet, but perhaps His ultimate examples of humility were His last days. He had called Himself: The Son of God, the Messiah, and yet He was flogged and beaten like a common criminal. He was abandoned and, alone, He dragged the cross through jeering crowds. Only a stranger, Simon assigned by the guards, toiled with Him to carry the burden of the cross. Jesus s status, at that time, could sink no lower! But, He suffered silently and with humility and at the end He prayed that God would forgive their ignorance. I think Paul, the great leader of early Christianity concludes well in 2 Cor: 12: that is why for Christ s sake, I delight in weakness, in hardships, in persecution, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. Authenticity: In His teachings, Jesus refers to The Father frequently. He taught that to focus on God and not self would result in integrity in truth and honesty. In John 3:21, He states: he who does the truth comes to the light that his deeds may be made manifest, for they have been performed in God.

13 He said to the Pharisees: you are they who declare yourselves just in the sight of men, but God knows your heart: for that which is exalted in the sight of men is an abomination before God. In John 7:18: He said: he who seeks the glory of the One who sent him is truthful and there is no injustice in him. Jesus taught not only by word but also by His actions. What He said and did was in perfect harmony to who He was. He showed indignation to hypocrisy when He chased the money changers out of the Temple and overthrew the tables. He knew these actions would anger the Sanhedrin and initiate His demise but He believed the Temple was: a house of prayer. He lived His life with integrity and attracted followers with His truth and never through manipulation. He said: If your eye is clear, your whole body will be filled with light. (Math 6:22) Vision: Jesus s vocation began with His baptism by John. Herod would silence John, but he could not silence Jesus. Jesus s vision had nothing to do with an armed struggle against the Romans. He used the word of the prophet Isaiah to articulate His mission: The spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He spoke these words in the Synagogue, and with multitudes staring in amazement, He said to them: today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing. Jesus was remarkably consistent and persistent in serving His vision. He had that strong sense of purpose which characterizes great leaders and makes them restless if they are not working on their vision. There is always another mountain to climb! In Mark 1:35, we can feel the energy and determination of Jesus when He could not rest, even after a full day of preaching. He said: Let us go to the next towns that I may preach there also: for that is why I came out. For the next two three years, Jesus travelled on foot preaching the good news and healing. He chose twelve disciples to share His task and instructed them not to accept money for their work: You received without pay, give without pay. (Matt. 4:24) He never lost sight of His mission, His vision for mankind. He was a Jewish peasant, yet His teachings encompass the world s dominant faith, with 2.5 billion Christians. Clearly, the man may not be among us, but His vision and His Spirit live on. -Barbara Poltak
