The Gospel of St. John (12:1-18) relates the event. It was the custom of the Jewish people at that time to greet people of high rank with branches of palms. In fact, they also gave branches of palms as rewards to conquerors. The Jews believed that Jesus was coming as the expected Messiah. As Great Lent draws to a close and the onset of Holy Week nears, the Saturday prior to Palm Sunday is commemorated as Lazarus Saturday (John 11:1-45). On this day we celebrate the rising from the dead of Lazarus by Jesus. Therefore Jesus was a great conqueror and deserved to be greeted as one by the people of Israel. Jesus, however, was not a conqueror of any earthly army or nation but of the greatest enemy of all DEATH itself. The people went to greet Him with palm branches in their hands and spread out their cloaks before Him on the road as a sign of respect as they cried Hosanna to the Son of David; Con t on page 2

The use of palm branches has come down to us through the centuries. On the ancient graves of martyrs we find pictures of angels or saints painted with palms in their hands. Often depicted on icons are palm branches at the foot of the Cross. On some graves two crossed palm branches are often painted, signifying the victory of the Cross. Moreover, on some ancient icons, palm branches together with the phoenix are frequently painted together. The phoenix is the ancient mythical bird that dies in the fire only to be reborn from its ashes. The early Christians used the phoenix as a symbol that through death we are born to eternal life. The custom of the distribution of palm branches exists to this day. In observance of Palm Sunday, green branches are blessed and given to worshippers. It is customary to use the first plant, which blooms in spring as a replacement for the palm branches. This is why in the Ukrainian Catholic and Orthodox Churches that this day is named Flower or Willow Sunday. In Eastern Europe, the environment is far to cold to permit palm trees to flourish; therefore they used the pussy willow branches, which were the first plant to bloom in the spring season. In even colder parts of Eastern Europe, silk or paper flowers would be distributed. In some parts of Greece where palm trees do not thrive, the laurel branches (bay leaf) are distributed. Regardless of whether it is a palm, a pussy willow, or a laurel branch, the worshippers take it home after celebrating the Divine Liturgy and place it in their icon corner over one of their icons or holy pictures.

9 Parish Capital Campaign Over the next several months, a committee of volunteers headed by Lift Capital Campaign chair, Danny Schur, will be reaching out to parishioners in an effort to raise $280,000 for the Lift Fund. Increasing the Lift Fund will improve our ability to garner grants and corporate sponsorship, and move the p r o j e c t t h a t m u c h c l o s e r t o fruition. Donations to the Lift Capital Campaign will receive a charitable donation receipt ONLY if the project proceeds, and only after January 1st, Should the project not proceed, donations to this Capital Campaign will be returned. BLESSING OF BASKETS AT PASCHA The origin and the basic significance of the blessing is clear: we have abstained from certain foods during Lent, and we receive the blessing of the Church to eat them on Pascha (Easter), to proclaim that all the goodness of Creation is renewed in Christ s Resurrection. These foods symbolize all of God s created gifts for us. The liturgical books prescribe that the foods should be blessed on Pascha itself, after the Divine Liturgy; however, many of our parishioners bring baskets of the Paschal foods on Holy Saturday for this blessing. Everyone should note that we do not bring the baskets into the nave of the church The reason for this rule is to stress that the genuine Paschal Lamb is the Lord Jesus Christ. Even though the foods are often blessed on Holy Saturday, we do not eat the Paschal foods until after the Divine Liturgy and Holy Communion of Pascha itself. Lazarus Saturday The Saturday before Palm Sunday, Lazarus Saturday, is the beginning of the cross and the last days of our Lord. Lent comes to its end as we have fulfilled the Forty Days and we enter into the annual commemoration of Christ s suffering, death and resurrection. With the raising of Lazarus, Jesus foreshadows the final and decisive victory over death by His own death. Lazarus Saturday announces and anticipates the light and peace of the coming Resurrection of Jesus. The liturgical services enable us to participate and share in this announcement and anticipation. The mood for the entire day is reflected in the Troparion: O Christ God, when you raised Lazarus from the dead, before the time of your passion, you confirmed the future resurrection... Great and Holy Friday Vigil Great and Holy Friday is one of the most solemn Holy Days within the life of the Church. On this day, we witness our Lord s unchanging love for us as He willingly gives His life for our sake. On Holy Friday, we watch our Lord s crucifixion by the hands of those He came to save. Holy Family Church will be open until midnight for private prayer( reopening 6:00 am) and vigil before the Holy Shroud. If you are available to keep watch like the soldiers guarding the tomb please sign your name for a one hour vigil. The sign up sheet will be located in the narthex.
