This is truly a man in a pitiable condition, meaning he wished for the crumbs, so he obviously was hungry, was sick all the time, cold, probably partially naked and ignored. I m sure the rich man saw him many times, but he was an invisible person to the rich man. And it came to pass that the beggar died and was carried by angels into Abraham s bosom. And then the Scripture says something quite tersely, as it does so often: the rich man died and was buried. Have you ever wondered at how things are not how they seem? Many times something which appears very plain is actually very beautiful? Something which appears very wonderful inside is all rotten and corrupt? Continued on page 2

2 Continued from page 1 Certainly when this rich man had his funeral, there were mourners; there were many, many people making a spectacle and probably speeches about what a fine man he was and how he would be missed and everything else. But as far as God is concerned, he died and was buried. The Lord Jesus Christ came in order to make us capable of eternal life. And the only way to be in Abraham s bosom is to live as God taught us, using His strength, His power, His ability, His grace, but living good, following the Commandments, struggling for holiness. There is no Christianity without struggling for holiness. There is no Christianity without good works. If we want to have our reward here on the earth, then we will have it. And if we want to massage our egos or indulge ourselves in hating someone or be selfish about our money or have bad priorities and be more concerned about our job than about prayer or entertainments, we will have our reward here. All those things, the Lord will allow us to have. And then when we die, the Lord will look into us and see, have we changed? Have we become like His Son? That s the yardstick He will use. He will look and see: are we like His Son? We who take the Lord s Body and Blood into our bodies and who have the Holy Spirit abiding in us, has it changed us? Has it made us more holy? Or are we just like everybody else? This is a principle you have to live. You MUST understand. Not something that you re thinking about per se, but a principle which affects all your living. There are consequences to all of our actions, even the smallest one. Lazarus was completely unknown. Lazarus was an invisible person, completely unimportant in society. Nobody cared. He was so ignored that only the dogs paid attention to him. And yet, what he did in life was a great significance because it saved his soul, enduring the evil things patiently. Everything that you do in life is remembered by the Lord, everything. This rich man lived a heedless life, and that was his greatest sin. Certainly he was guilty of not being compassionate to Lazarus, a person whom he knew, he certainly knew his name. But the root of his evils was heedlessness, the great killer of souls. Just be bopping through life, not caring about much except about the next thing, the next entertainment, the next meal, the next social encounter, whatever it is that strikes our fancy at the moment, things that are here today and are gone - not tomorrow they are not gone - they are gone the moment we experience them, and they ve given us no benefit whatsoever. May God help you to live a life that s heedful and careful. The Lord gives you many opportunities. We have the Scriptures available to read. We have the Services, which, to be honest with you, are often not well attended. I m not sure what s more important. You must find ways to continually convince yourself, to persuade yourself, to follow the Gospel. If you don t, then on the surface you will be a Christian, but inside you won t have changed. The Lord gives you all these opportunities. What a sad, terrible waste it is of this rich man to have gone to hell. The Lord gave him many, many things that he could have given to others, still have abundance for himself and done such good and been compassionate, given people comfort. He could have been, as it were, like Jesus Christ to them. But instead he used it for himself, and they all went away. May God help you to live a careful life. Amen.

10 Feast of St. Josaphat November 12th St Josaphat Kuncewitcz was born about the year 1580 at Vladimir, Volhynia, [part of the Polish province of Lithuania at the time] and given the name John at baptism. While being instructed as a child on the sufferings of our Savior, his heart is said to have been wounded by an arrow from the sacred side of the Crucified. In 1604 he joined the Ukrainian Order of Saint Basil (Basilians), lived as a monk in a very mortified life, went barefoot even in winter, refrained from the use of wine and flesh-meat, and always wore a penitential garb. In 1614 he was appointed archimandrite of Vilna, Russia and four years later archbishop of Polotzk; in this position he worked untiringly for Church reunion. He was a great friend of the poor, once even pledged his archepiscopal omophorion (pallium) to support a poor widow. The foes of union decided to assassinate him. In a sermon, he himself spoke of his death as imminent. When he visited Vitebsk (now in Russia), his enemies attacked his lodging and murdered a number of his companions. Meekly the man of God hastened toward the mob and, full of love, cried, "My children, what are you doing? If you have something against me, see, here I am." With furious cries of "Kill the papist!", they rushed upon him with gun and sword. Josaphat's body was thrown into the river but emerged, surrounded by rays of light, and was recovered. His murderers, when sentenced to death, repented their crime and became Catholics. 11 Christian Life Is a Continuous Battle Against the Devil Pope Francis Calls on Christians to Put on God's Armor to Resist Temptation Vatican City, October 30, 2014 (Zenit.org) Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the Devil. These words from St. Paul s Letter to the Ephesians were at the center of Pope Francis homily today at Casa Santa Marta. The Holy Father described Christian life as a continuous battle against three enemies: the devil, the world, and the desires of the flesh. Citing St. Paul s words in the first reading, the Pope invited the faithful to put on the armor of God to resist temptation. No spiritual life, he said, no Christian life is possible without resisting temptations, without putting on God s armor which gives us strength and protects us. The Pope also noted the incredulity regarding the devil s existence in today s world, where Satan is viewed as a myth or an idea of evil. But the devil exists and we must fight against him. St. Paul tells us this, it s not me saying it! he exclaimed. The Word of God is telling us this. But we re not all convinced of this. And then Paul describes God s armor and which are the different types that make up this great armour of God. And he says: So stand your ground, with truth as a belt around your waist. The truth is God s armor. Describing life as a military endeavour," the 77-year-old Pontiff said that while Christian life is a battle, it is a beautiful battle," especially when in the end, God is victorious. However, he noted, there are moments when we let our guard down. But we re all a bit lazy, aren t we, in this battle and we allow ourselves to get carried away by our passions, by various temptations. That s because we re sinners, all of us! he said. But don t get discouraged, Pope Francis concluded. Have courage and strength because the Lord is with us. Holodomor Memorial Day Saturday, November 22, 2014 at City Hall 1:30-4:00 pm The Holodomor is the name given to the genocide by famine that occurred in Ukraine from 1932 to As many as 10 million Ukrainians perished as victims of a manmade famine under Joseph Stalin s regime, with 25,000 dying each day at the peak of the famine. The name Holodomor is the Ukrainian word for "plague of hunger" or death inflicted by starvation derived from two words, holod starvation/famine and moryty to inflict death. Let us remember that this year Ukraine and the world will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the memory of the victims of the Holodomor - Genocide of This tragic page remains an unhealed wound in the history of our people. The memory of millions of lost lives, the pain of hundreds of thousands of families, unites most of the citizens of Ukraine, who always on the fourth Saturday of November light a candle of remembrance and go to the memorial places in Kyiv and in their cities and villages. This memory actively contributes to social peace and understanding among people, united by a shared pain about the past and a hope for the future.
