As I write this, our home is almost back to normal (i.e., ordinary time). We are coming off a couple of weeks of serious holiday festivities, and for students time out of class. Now it s time to get back to business either teaching (for me and my faculty colleagues) or taking (for the students) courses. Today s readings are excellent for motivating us to get into gear with our spiritual lives, too. The first reading from 1 Samuel reminds us that God is constantly calling us. This is not a historical story without relevance to us. We were all baptized to be priest, prophet, and king. But God does not force His will on us. Like Samuel, we must answer, Speak, for your servant is listening. Then our psalm says, "In the written scroll it is prescribed for me, to do your will, O my God, is my delight, and your law is within my heart!" Do we find delight in doing God s will, or do we see it as a burden? Then St. Paul gives us an extremely high standard for our actions. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been purchased at a price. Therefore glorify God in your body. In our society, we are made to feel that we are our own self-made people with sovereignty over ourselves. However, Jesus died for us, and so we are His. Finally, in the gospel, two disciples of John the Baptist followed Jesus based solely on John s testimony. One of them, Andrew, immediately got his brother, Simon Peter, to also follow Jesus. Two things strike me about this. One is the immediate faith of the earliest disciples and the other is their evangelization. We have 2,000 years of Christian faith and teaching, yet how little or poorly do we follow Jesus, instead creating our own personal version of Christianity to suit our desires. Are we so fervent in our faith that we draw anyone else into it? If we really believe that we have found the True Faith of the True God as revealed by Jesus the Christ, do we keep it to ourselves? We are stewards of the Church of Jesus and its Faith. Do we listen for God s call in our lives like Samuel did? Do we receive God s will with joy? Do we treat ourselves as sacred, since we were purchased by the Blood of Christ? Do we place our faith in Jesus, follow Him, and lead others to follow Him? Paul Gulig Member, Stewardship Committee and Chair, Parish Council 3
