4 Page 5 The Life of Jesus Matthew 22:15-21 ST. MAXIMILIAN KOLBE COUNTRY SUNDAY DANCE! The Pharisees went off and plotted how they might entrap Jesus in speech. They sent their disciples to him, with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are a truthful man and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. And you are not concerned with anyone's opinion, for you do not regard a person's status. Tell us, then, what is your opinion: Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?" Knowing their malice, Jesus said, "Why are you testing me, you hypocrites? Show me the coin that pays the census tax." Then they handed him the Roman coin. He said to them, "Whose image is this and whose inscription?" They replied, "Caesar's." At that he said to them, "Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God." 6 Page 7 LIVES OF THE SAINTS Occasionally in this space will appear a short article covering the lives of the saints, especially with reference to those saints whose likeness appear on the stained glass windows in the church and chapel, or whose statue is present in the chapel area or the candle room area. LIVES OF THE SAINTS May the wisdom of the Saints inspire us in our daily lives: 22 St. Salome, Mother of the Apostles, James & John St. Pope John Paul II, Pope 23 St. John of Capistrano, Priest 24 St. Anthony Mary Claret, Bishop 25 St. Gaudentius of Brescia, Bishop St. Antonio De Sant Anna Galvao, Franciscan Friar 26 St. Demetrius, Martyr St. Peter of Alcantara, Franciscan Friar 28 Sts. Simon & Jude, Apostles ST. JOHN OF CAPISTRANO Priest St. John was born at Capistrano, Italy in 1385, the son of a former German knight of that city. He studied law at the University of Perugia and practiced as a lawyer in the courts of Naples. King Ladislas of Naples appointed him governor of Perugia. During a war with a neighboring town he was betrayed and imprisoned. Upon his release he entered the Franciscan community at Perugia in He and St. James of the March were fellow students under St. Bernadine of Siena, who inspired him to institute the devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus and His Mother. St. John began his brilliant apostolate while a deacon in After his ordination he traveled throughout Italy, Germany, Bohemia, Austria, Hungary, Poland, and Russia preaching penance and establishing numerous communities of Franciscan renewal. When Mohammed II was threatening Vienna and Rome, St. John, at the age of 70, was commissioned by Pope Callistus II to preach and lead a crusade against the invading Turks. Marching at the head of 70,000 Christians, he gained victory in the great battle of Belgrade against the Turks in Three months later he died at Illok, Hungary. PRAYER Lord, You raised up St. John to console Your people in their distress. Grant that we may always be safe under Your protection and preserve Your Church in unending peace. Amen. ST. GAUDENTIUS OF BRESCIA Bishop Born at Brescia, Italy about the middle of the 4th century, St. Gaudentius was educated under St. Philastrius, Bishop of Brescia, whom he termed his father. After earning a reputation for sanctity, he traveled to the East where he gained even more fame. In his absence, he was elected Bishop by the people on the death of St. Philastrius; though he felt unworthy to receive such an honor, he was influenced to accept it by the Eastern Bishops, and in 387 he was consecrated by St. Ambrose. He was a powerful preacher and ten of his twenty-one sermons have survived offering ample testimony to this fact. He governed his See with prudence and humility, inspiring his flock to imitate the Divine Master constantly. In 405, he was sent with two others by Pope Innocent I and the Emperor Honorius to the East to defend St. John Chrysostom before Arcadius. However, the party was prevented from reaching Arcadius and never formally interceded for John; the three men were shipped back home on a vessel so unseaworthy that it almost sank and had to be left at Lampsacus. Subsequently, St. John wrote St. Gaudentius a letter of thanks for his efforts even though they had not borne fruit. This saintly man died about 410 and was called by Rufinus: the glory of the doctors of the age in which he lives. PRAYER God, Light and Shepherd of souls, You established St. Gaudentius as Bishop in Your Church to feed Your flock by his word and form it by his example. Help us through his intercession to keep the Faith he taught by his word and follow the way he showed by his example. Amen.

7 Page 8 Our Faith POPE ST. JOHN PAUL II Feast Day ober 22nd Open wide the doors to Christ, urged St. John Paul II during the homily at the Mass where he was installed as pope in Born in Wadowice, Poland on May 18, 1920, Karol Jozef Wojtyla had lost his mother, father, and older brother before his 21st birthday. Karol s promising academic career at Krakow s Jagiellonian University was cut short by the outbreak of World War II. While working in a quarry and a chemical factory, he enrolled in an underground seminary in Kraków. Ordained in 1946, he was immediately sent to Rome where he earned a doctorate in theology. Back in Poland, a short assignment as assistant pastor in a rural parish preceded his very fruitful chaplaincy for university students. Soon Fr. Wojtyla earned a doctorate in philosophy and began teaching that subject at Poland s University of Lublin. Communist officials allowed Wojtyla to be appointed auxiliary bishop of Kraków in 1958, considering him a relatively harmless intellectual. They could not have been more wrong! Bishop Wojtyla attended all four sessions of Vatican II and contributed especially to its Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World. Appointed as archbishop of Kraków in 1964, he was named a cardinal three years later. Elected pope in ober 1978, he took the name of his short-lived, immediate predecessor. Pope St. John Paul II was the first non-italian pope in 455 years. In time, he made pastoral visits to 124 countries, including several with small Christian populations. St. John Paul II promoted ecumenical and interfaith initiatives, especially the 1986 Day of Prayer for World Peace in Assisi. He visited Rome s main synagogue and the Western Wall in Jerusalem; he also established diplomatic relations between the Holy See and Israel. He improved Catholic-Muslim relations, and in 2001 visited a mosque in Damascus, Syria. The Great Jubilee of the Year 2000, a key event in St. John Paul s ministry, was marked by special celebrations in Rome and elsewhere for Catholics and other Christians. Relations with the Orthodox Churches improved considerably during his papacy. Christ is the center of the universe and of human history was the opening line of St, John Paul II s 1979 encyclical, Redeemer of the Human Race. In 1995, he described himself to the United Nations General Assembly as a witness to hope. His 1979 visit to Poland encouraged the growth of the Solidarity movement there and the collapse of communism in central and eastern Europe 10 years later. St. John Paul II began World Youth Day and traveled to several countries for those celebrations. He very much wanted to visit China and the Soviet Union, but the governments in those countries prevented that. One of the most well-remembered photos of St. John Paul II s pontificate was his one-on-one conversation in 1983, with Mehmet Ali Agca, who had attempted to assassinate him two years earlier. In his 27 years of papal ministry, St. John Paul II wrote 14 encyclicals and five books, canonized 482 saints and beatified 1,338 people. In the last years of his life, he suffered from Parkinson s disease and was forced to cut back on some of his activities. On April 2, 2005, St. John Paul II spoke his final words in Polish, "Pozwólcie mi odejść do domu Ojca" ("Allow me to depart to the house of the Father"), to his aides, and died later that night. So many mourned the death of this saintly Pope, who was loved by many. Pope Benedict XVI beatified St. John Paul II on May 1, 2011, and Pope Francis canonized him on April 27, 2014, which was Divine Mercy Sunday. Pope Benedict XVI was also in attendance. ( Freedom consists not in doing what we like, but in having the right to do what we ought. - Pope St. John Paul II

SPECIAL MASS FOR ALL SOULS DAY It is said that one of the greatest gifts that God has bestowed on us is the gift of memories. Recalling memories can be comforting to us at times when feel at our lowest. Understanding these deep feelings, the Church sets aside the month of November as a time of prayer for all those who have died. In particular, we celebrate the Feast of All Souls. Keeping in mind this tradition, The Ryan Family would like to remember all the faithful departed by having a Mass celebrated in their memory. In conjunction with St. Maximilian Kolbe Church, I have arranged with Fr. Stephen Piga to have a special Memorial Mass on Thursday, November 2nd, 2017 at 12:00 P.M. Fr. Stephen and The Ryan Family hope you can join us to remember and give thanks for the lives of those who have gone before us. If you will be attending, please call Ryan Funeral Home at so we will have an idea about how many will be in attendance. May the Lord bless you and keep you in His care. Sincerely, Timothy E.
