5 Page 6 The Life of Jesus John 20:1-9 On the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them, "They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don't know where they put him." So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first; he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in. When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there, and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place. Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed. For they did not yet understand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead. Happy Easter everyone! We all know it is very difficult at times to live in the joy and new life of Jesus risen. We lose loved ones to death and it seems like every day brings us some share of uncertainty, fear, and trouble. This is the way life is in this world. Sin, suffering and death belong to our lot as humans in this fallen world. But we are sons and daughters of God, heirs to the Father, in Jesus Christ. Each day, and most surely when misfortune strikes, the Spirit of God who lives in our hearts is there to rekindle in us this truth: Jesus is risen! Every day, especially this day, Easter Sunday, this Good News gives us strength, joy, and new life in Christ. Why? Well, for one thing, because we too will rise, into God s Heavenly kingdom when our time comes. And so, on behalf of my associate, Fr. Carlos Castilla, and on behalf of Fr. John DeSandre, Msgr. Vince Doyle, Fr. Bernie Mohan, Fr. Ed Furrevig, Deacons Al and Stan, and our wonderful parish staff, a very Happy Easter season to one and all! Blessings, Fr. Steve
6 Page 7 LIVES OF THE SAINTS Occasionally in this space will appear a short article covering the lives of the saints, especially with reference to those saints whose likeness appear on the stained glass windows in the church and chapel, or whose statue is present in the chapel area or the candle room area. LIVES OF THE SAINTS May the wisdom of the Saints inspire us in our daily lives: 1 St. Hugh, Bishop of Grenoble 2 St. Francis of Paola, Hermit 3 St. Richard, Bishop St. Benedict the Moor, Religious 4 St. Isidore of Seville, Bishop & Doctor of the Church 5 St. Vincent Ferrer, Priest 6 St. Marcellinus of Carthage, Martyr St. Crescentia Hoess, Religious 7 St. John Baptist De La Salle, Priest ST. FRANCIS OF PAOLA Hermit St. Francis was born about the year 1416, at Paola, a small city in Calabria. His parents were very poor, but virtuous. He learned to read in the Franciscan convent at St. Mark s, a town in the same province. After spending a year with the Franciscans, he took up his abode in solitude about half a mile from Paola in Before he was twenty, two others joined him to share in his devout exercises. The neighbors built them three cells and a chapel, in which a priest from the parish church said Mass for them. This is looked upon as the beginning of the Order of Minims, the foundation of which is placed in The Order was confirmed by a bull of Sixtus IV in 1474, with St. Francis as Superior General. The first monastery had been built in 1454 and was followed by several others. In 1482, he went to France by command of Sixtus IV, at the request of Louis XI, whose entire conversion he effected before the latter s death in St. Francis now established his Order in France, and Charles VII and Louis XII became its special benefactors. When his long life of penance was drawing to a close, St. Francis spent the last three months in his cell to prepare for death and eternity. He fell sick on Palm Sunday, 1508, and died shortly thereafter at 91 years of age. ST. CRESCENTIA HOESS Religious St. Crescentia was born on October 20, 1682, the daughter of a poor weaver, in a little town near Augsburg. She spent play time praying in the parish church, assisted those even poorer than herself and had so mastered the truths of her religion that she was permitted to make her first Holy Communion at the then unusually early age of 7. In the town she was called the little angel. As she grew older, she desired to enter the convent of the Tertiaries of Saint Francis. But the convent was poor, and because St. Crescentia had no dowry, the superiors refused her admission. Her case was then pleaded by the Protestant mayor of the town to whom the convent owed a favor. The community felt it was forced into receiving her, and her new life was made miserable. She was considered a burden and assigned nothing other than menial tasks. Even her cheerful spirit was misinterpreted as flattery or hypocrisy. Conditions improved four years later when a new superior was elected who realized her virtue. St. Crescentia herself was appointed mistress of novices. She so won the love and respect of the sisters that, upon the death of the superior, St. Crescentia was unanimously elected to that position. Under her, the financial state of the convent improved and her reputation in spiritual matters spread. She was soon being consulted by princes and princesses; bishops and cardinals too sought her advice. And yet, a true daughter of Francis, she remained ever humble. Bodily afflictions and pain were always with her. First it was headaches and toothaches. Then she lost the ability to walk, her hands and feet gradually becoming so crippled that her body curled up into a fetal position. In the spirit of Francis she cried out, Oh, you bodily members, praise God that he has given you the capacity to suffer. Despite her sufferings she was filled with peace and joy as she died on Easter Sunday on il 5, She was beatified in 1900 and canonized by St. Pope John Paul II in 2001.
7 Page 8 Our Faith CHRIST IS RISEN Matt Maher HE IS LIFE What does it mean that Jesus is risen? It means that the love of God is stronger than evil and death itself and that the love of God can transform our lives and let those desert places in our hearts bloom. Jesus no longer belongs to the past, but lives in the present and is projected towards the future. His newness appears to us as victory over sin, evil and eath and everything that crushes life. Let the risen Jesus enter your life. Welcome Him as a friend, with trust for He is life! Jesus is with you and will give you the peace you are looking for and the strength to live as He would have you do. Pope Francis THE EASTER SEASON We now begin the Easter season which lasts seven weeks, ending on the evening of Pentecost Sunday. It is a season full of life. The Paschal Candle will burn brightly in our church as we experience the fire of His love. Keep the memory of Jesus alive, catch the spirit in the air as a reminder of the Holy Spirit within you. Bishop Ken Untener Let no one caught in sin remain Inside the lie of inward shame We fix our eyes upon the cross And run to Him who showed great love And bled for us Freely You ve bled for us Trampling over death by death We are one with Him again Beneath the weight of all our sin You bowed to none but Heaven s will No scheme of hell, no scoffer s crown No burden great can hold You down In strength You reign Forever let Your church proclaim Trampling over death by death We are one with Him again O death, where is your sting? O hell, where is your victory? O church, come stand in the light The glory of God has defeated the night Sing it, o death where is your sting? O hell, where is your victory? O church, come stand in the light Our God is not dead, He s alive, He s alive We are one with Him again
8 HIS WORD TODAY Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord il 1, 2018 Peter proceeded to speak and said: You know what has happened all over Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached, how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses of all that he did...they put him to death hanging him on a tree. This man God raised up on the third day and granted that he be visible not to all but to us, the witnesses chosen by God in advance who ate and drank with after he rose from the dead. Page 9 We can listen to many Easter sermons, telling of the events and appearances of Jesus. We visit the upper room with the apostles, meet Him with Mary in the garden, breakfast with Him on the shore of Tiberias, and share an evening meal in Emmaus. All are witness stories. The Pentecost sermon of Peter summarizes the event of Easter and its meaning for the witness. He was anointed with the Holy Spirit so we too have been confirmed. He was filled with power, so too we who live the life of grace. He went about doing good, the work of the church and we missionary disciples today. We too are the chosen witnesses of the Risen One who eat at His table, breaking the break of life. Easter faith tells us that He lives and among us. Easter joy fills us with a special enthusiasm. Easter commissioning sends us to bring that joy to others. (Rev. William J. Reilly) _ MORNING COFFEE FOR GRANDMA One morning, a grandmother was surprised to find that her 7-year old grandson had made her coffee. Smiling, she choked down the worst cup of her life. When she finished, she found three little green Army men at the bottom. Puzzled, she asked, Honey, what are these Army men doing in my coffee? Her grandson answered, Like it says on TV, Grandma, The best part of waking up is soldiers in your cup! (Anyone else remember the Folgers in Your Cup commercial?) ST.
