Our goal was $995,000. Our pledge to date is $325,000. So we have not come anywhere near our goal. The total paid so far is $191,000. So there is still a balance of $134,000. The good news is we have been refunded back around $45,000! The bad news is the Bishop may toss our pastor out on his ear and bring in a new pastor who can raise money better just kidding, I think. 5 Page 6 The Life of Jesus Matthew 14:22-33 After they got into the boat, the wind died down. Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, "Truly, you are the Son of God." FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR After he had fed the people, Jesus made the disciples get into a boat and precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone. Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. "It is a ghost," they said, and they cried out in fear. At once Jesus spoke to them, "Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid." Peter said to him in reply, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water." He said, "Come." Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!" Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught Peter, and said to him, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?" Our Parish will be celebrating our church s 32nd Anniversary this year! We would like to celebrate our patron saint and the anniversary of our church. After much prayer and discussion, we have decided to have a fundraiser to help offset the financial costs of the parish, of which there are many. For example, finishing the mausoleum takes a large amount of money and we have also bought new chairs for your comfort in our parish hall. And now, Madeline Gardner, who generously is spearheading this party effort, will speak.. Hi! I want to celebrate the Anniversary of our parish with you, but also make it a FUN raiser, and a FUND raiser, where our parish would benefit to help us with our financial needs. We are asking for the intercessory of St. Maximilian and your generosity to make this a fun day for all. It will be a luncheon with sandwiches and salads, soda, water, coffee, tea, and dessert. The cost of the ticket will be $25.00 which is reflective of raising funds, and there will be a 50/50 raffle, gift baskets to be raffled, and Jailhouse Rock Raffle, where the parishioners raise bail to get Fr. Steve and Fr. Phil Out of Jail. The winner of this raffle wins a dance or a song with both priests. We will have live music and dancing. We are planning it for cooler weather, so get your dancing shoes on! We hope to see you there! There will be no reserved seating and tickets will not be sold at the door. Tickets will go on sale before and after all Masses, except the 7:00 A.M. Masses, starting on August 19th, 2017 until September 24th, Also, tickets will be sold on Tuesdays, from 10:00 A.M. 11:00 A.M. in front of the parish hall. Save the Date: Sunday, October 1, 2017 at 2:30 P.M in the Parish Hall Lunch will provided by: Wolfies, BYOB Music will provided by: Bob Kulik, vocal stylist ~ Fr. Stephen, Madeline Gardner & the Anniversary Committee

6 Page 7 Our Faith ST. MAXIMILIAN KOLBE Heroic Witness to Our Lady St. Maximilian Kolbe was born on January 8, 1894 in Zdunska Wola, Poland. His entire life was centered on his great love and devotion to Our Lady through her Immaculate Conception. At the age of six he had a vision of her: That night I asked the Mother of God what was to become of me. Then she came to me holding two crowns, one white, the other red. She asked me if I was willing to accept either of these crowns. The white one meant that I should persevere in purity, and the red that I should become a martyr. I said that I would accept them both. Kolbe and his older brother entered the Conventual Franciscans in 1910 and he made his final vows to the evangelical counsels of poverty, obedience, and chastity in He was then sent to Rome to study at the Pontifical Gregorian University where he pursued a doctorate in Philosophy. He then continued on to receive a doctorate in Theology at the Pontifical University of St. Bonaventure in Throughout his studies he remained steadfast in his devotion and commitment to Mary and consecration to her. He had taken the additional religious name Marie. His devotion to her grew as he witnessed attacks on Popes St. Pius X and Benedict XV at the hands of Freemasons. It was then that he founded the Militia of the Immaculata in order to combat Freemasonry, as well as other enemies of the Church. The movement was founded for the evangelization of the world through the intercession of Mary. During the midst of his studies, Kolbe was ordained to the priesthood and he returned to the newly independent Poland where he taught at seminary. He continued his dedication to Our Lady and vehemently opposed Leftist ideologies, including Communism. While there he battled his second round of tuberculosis and upon his recovery lived in a weakened physical state until his death. After his recovery, he made multiple missionary trips to East Asia. He struggled to garner a following to Jesus Christ and His Church in China, but was able to establish a monastery in Japan. The monastery actually survived the nuclear blast on Nagasaki. In 1936 Kolbe s poor health forced him to return to Poland. World War II began for him with the invasion of Poland and Kolbe remained in the monastery with a few of his brothers in order to serve in the area. They opened a small hospital for the wounded and sick. He was briefly arrested and refused to sign the Deutsche Volksliste which would have given him the same rights as Germans if he claimed his own German ancestry; Kolbe s father was German. He then began his work that would most directly lead to his eventual imprisonment in a concentration camp. His monastery hid and protected people throughout Poland including 1,000-2,000 Jews. He also continued his religious publications, even though they were limited by the new Nazi regime. Many of the works they published were anti-nazi in nature. On February 17th, 1941 his monastery was shut down and along with four others, Kolbe was sent to Pawiak prison. On May 28th, 1941 he was transferred to Auschwitz as prisoner # While in Auschwitz, Kolbe continued his duties as a priest. He was harassed, beaten, and tormented by his captors. On July 3 three prisoners escaped prompting the authorities to select 10 men to die in an underground bunker as reprisal. Kolbe volunteered in the place of a husband and father, and saved the life of Franciszek Gajownjczek. Nazis had captured Gajownjczek and other Catholics, after discovering the group s underground operations to save the Jews. St. Maximilian Kolbe spent two weeks slowly dying of dehydration and starvation. Throughout those last two weeks he spent his days in deep prayer and devotion to Our Lady. On August 14th, 1941 he was given a lethal dose of carbolic acid and died a martyr s death. His remains were cremated on August 15th, the Feast of the Assumption. He was canonized by St. John Paul II on October 10th, 1982 and Mr. Gajownjczek was there for the joyous occasion. (

7 Page 8 LIVES OF THE SAINTS Occasionally in this space will appear a short article covering the lives of the saints, especially with reference to those saints whose likeness appear on the stained glass windows in the church and chapel, or whose statue is present in the chapel area or the candle room area. LIVES OF THE SAINTS May the wisdom of the Saints inspire us in our daily lives: Aug 13 Sts. Pontian & Hippolytus Aug 14 St. Maximilian Kolbe, Priest & Martyr Aug 15 The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Aug 16 St. Stephen of Hungary, King Aug 17 St. Joan of the Cross St. Hyacinth, Priest Aug 18 St. Louis of Toulouse St. Helena, Widow Aug 19 St. John Eudes, Priest Jesus and Mary both passed through the gate of death into heaven. In her own way, Mary was crucified with Jesus. She patiently stayed on earth, after His Ascension, so long as God willed. From her place in heaven she still abides invisibly with us, ever our refuge, our comfort, our hope. Through the Communion of Saints, of which she is the Queen, we share in the joy and glory of her Assumption, to which the entrance song of the Mass on August 15th gives us the key THE MAGNIFICAT (Canticle of Mary) My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for He has looked with favor on His lowly servant. THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY On November 1st, 1950, Pope Pius XII defined as a truth revealed by God that the Immaculate Mother of God, Mary ever Virgin, when the course of her life on earth was finished, was taken up body and soul into heaven. Such is the dogma of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin. It was surely fitting, it was becoming, that she should be taken up into heaven and not lie in the grave till Christ s second coming, who had passed a life of sanctity and of miracles such as hers...who can conceive that the virginal frame which never sinned, was to undergo the death of a sinner? She died, then, because even our Lord and Savior died, but though she died as well as others, she died not as others die; for, through the merits of Her Son, by whom she was what she was, by the grace of Jesus Christ which in her had anticipated sin, which had filled her with light, which had purified her flesh from all defilement, she had been saved from disease and malady, and all that weakens and decays the bodily frame (Cardinal Newman). From this day all generations will call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is His Name. He has mercy on those who fear Him in every generation. He has shown the strength of His arm, He has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich He has sent away empty. He has come to the help of His servant Israel for He has remembered His promise of mercy, the promise He made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children for ever. Amen.
