5 Page 6 The Life of Jesus Matthew 25:31-46 Jesus said to his disciples: "When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit upon his glorious throne, and all the nations will be assembled before him. And he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. Then the king will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.' Then the righteous will answer him and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?' And the king will say to them in reply, 'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of the least brothers of mine, you did for me.' Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, a stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for me.' Then they will answer and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs?' He will answer them, 'Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.' And these will go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life." CHRIST THE KING NOVENA PRAYER Recite one Our Father, one Hail Mary and one Glory Be per day followed by the Novena Prayer: O Lord our God, You alone are the Most Holy King And Ruler of all nations. We pray to You, Lord, in the great expectation of receiving from You, O Divine King, mercy, peace, justice and all good things. Protect, O Lord our King, our families and the land of our birth. Guard us we pray Most Faithful One. Protect us from our enemies and for Your Just Judgment. Forgive us, O Sovereign King, our sins against you. Jesus, You are a King of Mercy. We have deserved Your Just Judgment. Have mercy on us, Lord and forgive us. We trust in Your Great Mercy. O most aweinspiring King, we bow before You and pray; May Your Reign, Your Kingdom be recognized on earth. Amen.

6 Page 7 LIVES OF THE SAINTS Occasionally in this space will appear a short article covering the lives of the saints, especially with reference to those saints whose likeness appear on the stained glass windows in the church and chapel, or whose statue is present in the chapel area or the candle room area. LIVES OF THE SAINTS May the wisdom of the Saints inspire us in our daily lives: Nov 26 St. John Berchmans, Religious Nov 27 St. Maximus, Bishop St. Francesco Antonio Fasani Nov 28 St. James of the Marche, Priest Nov 29 St. Saturninus, Bishop & Martyr Nov 30 St. Andrew, Apostle Dec Dec 1 St. Florence, Laywoman 2 St. Bibiana, Virgin & Martyr ST. JAMES OF THE MARCHE Priest James Gangala was born in 1391 in the Marche of Ancona, Italy and was therefore surnamed of the Marche. Though of humble origin he was able to attend the University of Perugia and won the laurels of Doctor of Laws. However, after a short stint at teaching, he renounced the world to become a Franciscan friar. He was ordained and for 50 years preached the faith to thousands in season and out of season. Together with St. John Capistrano he fought strenuously against the rigorist and heretical sects known as the Fraticelli, and helped reconcile the moderate Hussites to the Church at the Council of Basle. Everywhere he went James stood as a luminous figure of sanctity and the Franciscan apostolate. Such was the fervor and power of his preaching that he is said to have converted fifty thousand heretics and countless sinners, including 36 harlots through a single sermon on St. Mary Magdalene. He traveled all over Europe as the ambassador of Popes and rulers, sleeping little and praying much. His love for the poor led him to establish pawnshops where they might borrow money at low rates, a work which was made very popular by his protégé, St. Bernadine of Feltre. Despite a vigorous life schedule, rigorous penances, and never-ending activity, St. James died at the age of 85 on November 28, PRAYER God, You made St. James on illustrious preacher of the Gospel to save souls and bring back sinners from the mire of sin to the pathway of virtue. Through his intercession may we be cleansed from all sin and obtain eternal life. Amen. ST. ANDREW Apostle St. Andrew, the brother of St. Peter, was a native of the town of Bethsaida in Galilee, and a fisherman by profession. Being first a disciple of St. John the Baptist, he later joined Jesus, and also brought to Him his brother Simon, with whom he became a member of the Apostolic College. After the dispersion of the Apostles, St. Andrew preached the Gospel in Scythia, as we learn from Origen; and as Sophronius says, also in Sogdiana and Colchis. According to Theodoret, St. Gregory Nazianzen, and St. Jerome, he also labored in Greece. It is even believed that he carried the Gospel as far as Russia and Poland, and that he preached at Byzantium. He suffered martyrdom at Patras in Achaia, and, according to ancient authorities, by crucifixion on a cross in the form of an X. The body of the saint was taken to Constantinople in 357, and deposited in the church of the Apostles, built by Constantine the Great. In 1270, when the city fell into the hands of the Latins, the relics were transported to Italy and deposited in the Cathedral of Amalfi. PRAYER Lord, You raised up St. Andrew, Your Apostle, to preach and rule in Your Church. Grant that we may always experience the benefit of his intercession with You. Amen. ST. FLORENCE Laywoman St. Florence was the daughter of a Roman colonist who was residing in Asia Minor on the road that led from Frigia in Seleucia. St. Hilary of Poitiers met her during a stop on his journey toward Seleucia where the Synod of 359 was to be held. Florence requested Baptism from the holy Bishop and followed him on his return to Poitou the next year. She then retired to Comble, Vienne, France, where she led the life of a hermit. She communed with God day and night, practicing much penance and combating the assaults of the devil. Finally worn out by her labors, she died in 366 at 29 years of age. Her relics were transferred to the Cathedral of Poitiers in the 11th century.

7 Page 8 Our Faith OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE Scripture is rich in the imagery it uses to unveil Jesus. He is Lord, Servant, Master, Friend, Teacher, Prophet, Healer, and more. There is a wonderful depth to the person and mission of Christ which the Spirit longs to reveal to those who seek it. It is like the delight of an experienced jeweler who finds a prize diamond; like the joy of a new bride who cherishes every moment spent with her beloved. Today the church invites us to reflect on yet another aspect of Jesus nature as we celebrate the feast of Christ the King. Though Jesus is portrayed as king, he is neither haughty nor pompous. His kingship is tied intrinsically to the humble image of the good Shepherd. Throughout salvation history, Yahweh revealed himself as the faithful shepherd of his people (Genesis 49:24; Psalm 23:1; Isaiah 40:11). He promised to find his lost sheep and heal them, to feed them with justice (Ezekiel 34:11-16). Yahweh, the Father of Israel, fulfilled his promise by sending Jesus, who conquered our hearts through love, not power. Even so, the humble Christ is rightfully called king; he defeated death, and all creation is subject to him (1 Corinthians 15:26-28). As our king, he calls us to obey his law the law of love. Based on this law, he will require an accounting from us at the end of time: Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me (Matthew 25:40). How do we fulfill this law of love? Our own standards might leave us bewildered as the goats in the parable. We must begin by humbly asking the King to reign in our hearts. For this reason, we come to the table of the Lord confessing: Lord, I am not worthy.only say the word and my soul shall be healed. As we receive Jesus love for us into our hearts, we are empowered to serve others. If we receive openly, we can give generously. Let us seek the green pastures of the Shepherd and allow him to fill our cup to overflowing. Then, at our journey s end, when Christ reigns over all creation, he will deliver us to the Father through the Spirit. He will commend us at last into the unity of the Trinity, saying: Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world (Matthew 25:34). POINTS FOR MEDITATION: In Matthew 25, Jesus is described as coming in his glory and sitting on his royal throne. In separating the sheep from the goats, what is this King most concerned about? How often do you recognize the King of glory disguised in the hungry, the homeless, the sick, or the imprisoned? Jesus is our King, but he never commands our allegiance. Instead he waits for us to invite him to reign in our hearts. How is Jesus kingship manifested in your life? Extend a fresh invitation to Jesus to reign more fully in your heart. If we are in the service of Christ the King, then we must be ready to advance his kingdom. Do you feel compelled to share the good news of Christ with others? Ask the Lord to give you a sense of urgency about evangelizing those who don t know him. PRAYER: Jesus, I pray that when you return, you will find faith among all people. May your return find me feeding the hungry, welcoming strangers, and preaching your good news to all. Amen. (The Word Among Us-Patricia Mitchell)
