This year we are commemorating the 99th Anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun at Fatima. Why publicly recite the Rosary? To memorialize the Miracle of the Sun at Fatima which seeks Mary s intercession and blessings. Millions in the United States are gathering for the recitation of the Rosary during the annual Rosary Rally. The objective of the Rosary Rally is to pray for Our Lady s intercession for the conversion of sinners and protection of our Country. Additionally, the reciting of the Rosary is for fallen away Catholics, reparation for the public sins of abortion, the public honoring of God, the preparation of Our Lady s triumph and because public prayer is most powerful. Bring your own chair if you need one. _ IF CHILDREN LIVE WITH. If children live with hostility they learn to fight. If children live with jealousy they learn what envy is. 6 Page 7 The Life of Jesus Matthew 22:41-23: 39; Mark 12: 35-40; Luke 20: JESUS REBUKES SCRIBES & PHARISEES To put an end to His enemies insidious heckling, Jesus asked: What do you think of Christ? Whose Son is He? He seemingly addressed His question to the entire gathering, but He was aiming at the Scribes and Pharisees present. When they replied that they believed Him to be David s son, Jesus said How then does David in the Spirit call him Lord, saying, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, till I make thy enemies the footstool of thy feet? If David, therefore calls Him Lord how is He his Son? Jesus questioners were silent. Only the mystery of the Incarnation could explain how Christ was at once God, and hence David s Lord and through His ancestry a man and David s son. Thereafter, they dared not question Him, but Jesus rebuked them publicly before His disciples and the crowd in the most caustic of His recorded speeches. They were blind guides who were turning the whole nation from the path to salvation, and in this last public address Jesus showed clearly to the people hw empty and vicious these leaders were. The Scribes and the Pharisees have sat on the chair of Moses. All things, therefore, that they command you, observe and do. But do not act according to their works, for they talk but do nothing. They bind together heavy and oppressive burdens, and lay them on men s shoulders, but not with one finger of their own do they choose to move them. In fact, all their works they do in order to be seen by men, for they widen their tassels and love the first places at suppers, the front seats in synagogue and greetings in the market place to be called by men Rabbi. But do not be called Rabbi, for one is your Master and all you are brothers. Call no one on earth your father for one is you Father who is in heaven. Neither be called masters for one only is your Master, the Christ. He who is greatest among you shall be your servant. Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted. Woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees hypocrites, because you shut the kingdom of heaven against men. For you, yourselves do not go in, nor do you allow those going in to enter. Woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees hypocrites, because you devour the homes of widows, praying long prayers. For this you shall receive a greater judgment. Woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees hypocrites, because you travel sea and land to make on convert and when he has become one, you make him twofold more a son of hell than yourself. Woe to you blind guides, who say, Whoever swears by the temple it is nothing but whoever swears by the gold of the temple he is bound. You blind fools, which is greater, the gold or the temple which sanctifies the gold. (Continued next week) The Life of Christ
7 Page 8 LIVES OF THE SAINTS Occasionally in this space will appear a short article covering the lives of the saints, especially with reference to those saints whose likeness appear on the stained glass windows in LIVES OF THE SAINTS May the wisdom of the Saints inspire us in our daily lives:. October 9 St. Denis, Bishop October 9 St. John Leonardi, Priest October 10 St. Francis Borgia, Priest October 11 St. Bruno the Great Bishop October 12 St. Wilfrid, Bishop October 13 St. Edward the Confessor October 14 St. Callistus I, Pope October 15 St. Teresa of Avila ST. TERESA OF AVILA Patroness of Headache Sufferers Teresa was born in a small city of Avila. As a young girl she struggled to balance a love for God with a need for friends and fun. Later as a teenager she was more interested in boys than religion. When Teresa was sixteen her father sent her to a convent which she hated at first but began to feel closer to God. Even after Teresa committed herself to religious life, it wasn t easy giving up worldly pleasures. Soon Teresa grew deeper into her faith and realized that she could help other nuns overcome the challengers she faced. She founded a new Order the Discalced Carmelites, that focused on a return to simplicity and mental prayer. Besides prayer, she taught the nuns in her Order that asking God for the ability to actually do good was more important than simply saying prayers. Even those that express gratitude to the Lord. Teresa s writings include Interior Castle and Way to Perfection have been a source of inspiration for centuries. She was named a Doctor of the Church for her teaching and writing. ST. FRANCIS BORGIA Patron of Portugal Francis was born in an imperial family. He was the great grandson of Pope Alexander VI and King Ferdinand of Aragon as well as cousin of Emperor Charles V. When Francis was eighteen he served at court and soon was the marquis of Llombay. After his father died he became one of Spain s most respected nobles. Francis helped found a hospital and university for the Society of Jesus. After his wife died Francis gave up his public life and dedicated himself entirely to God s service. Providing for his eight children he entered the Jesuit Order. But Francis would still be torn between his desire to live a quiet, secluded life, his public duty and his administrative ability. With the Society of Jesus, Francis did not seek advancement. But within three years, the Order s founder, Ignatius Loyola asked Francis to become a provincial head. Then he became the Superior General of the entire Order. Under Francis s leadership the Jesuits attracted many recruits, established 20 colleges in Europe and began new missions in the Americas. Francis did so much to create the Order s internal structure and further its expansion that he is often referred to as the Second Founder of the Jesuits. However, he worried that the many activities of the Jesuits might distract them from their religious purpose. To remind them of their dedication to Christ, Francis instituted a rule that each Jesuit must meditate for an hour each day. Francis was a leader to the end of his life. He died, at the age of 62 upon his return from a mission for Pope Pius V. Francis Borgia was able to spread the word of God as well as expand the world of education.
8 Page 9 Our Faith SOME OF US.. Some of us may have the same habit children occasionally exhibit at the dinner table. We turn our noses up at unfamiliar food. We make a negative decision based on sight about something that can only be adequately judged by taste. Unlike children, though some of us continue to judge with one sense what only another sense can take in. We judge others with our eyes, determining by their look or skin color what type of person they are, when our ears, open to hear and understand need to be the sense organ used in this case. We have a tendency to judge the Lord with the wrong sense organs. We use our eyes to look at how church people act and we conclude that God is not for us when we see them do something we don t like. We use our ears to catch any hint of a slip of the tongue by a pastor and we decide to stop going to church. The truth is, God can only be experienced in our hearts. We have to taste Him for ourselves. We have to see Him for ourselves. Once we experience Him, we will find that He is indeed ultimate goodness. In John 20: 24-25, Thomas refused to believe that Jesus had risen from the dead unless he saw Him with his own eyes, and touched Him with his own hands. Jesus said: Because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed. Revel in the ultimate goodness of God simply because of who He is, not because of what He has done. Just adore Him because of His goodness.
