5 Page 6 The Life of Jesus Mark 1:21-28 Then they came to Capernaum, and on the sabbath Jesus entered the synagogue and taught. The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes. In their synagogue was a man with an unclean spirit; he cried out, "What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are the Holy One of God!" Jesus rebuked him and said, "Quiet! Come out of him!" The unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him. All were amazed and asked one another, "What is this? A new teaching with authority. He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him." His fame spread everywhere throughout the whole region of Galilee. We are pleased to announce that Bishop David O Connell has given us a new full-time priest to replace Fr. Phil, who retired in November. His name is Fr. Carlos Castilla and we are pleased to have him and he is happy to be with us. He will be starting his full time work here on Ash Wednesday. Welcome Fr. Carlos! Blessings, Fr. Stephen FAITH IN OUR FUTURE CORE TEAM If anyone would like to serve our parish as representatives on the Faith in our Future Core Team, along with representatives from St. Joe s, St. Luke s, and St. Justin s, please contact the Parish Office at Thank you for your consideration! 6 Page 7 LIVES OF THE SAINTS Occasionally in this space will appear a short article covering the lives of the saints, especially with reference to those saints whose likeness appear on the stained glass windows in the church and chapel, or whose statue is present in the chapel area or the candle room area. LIVES OF THE SAINTS May the wisdom of the Saints inspire us in our daily lives: Jan Jan Jan Jan Feb Feb Feb 28 St. Thomas Aquinas, Priest & Doctor of the Church 29 St. Gildas the Wise, Abbot 30 St. Bathildis, Widow 31 St. John Bosco, Priest 1 St. Bridgid (Bride) of Ireland, Virgin 2 The Presentation of the Lord 3 St. Blaise, Bishop & Martyr St. Ansgar, Bishop ST. JOHN BOSCO Priest St. John Bosco was born on a poor farm near Turin, Italy, in At an age when the modern child would be enjoying the pastime of a kindergarten education, he was out on the hillside tending sheep. At about his ninth year, when he expressed the desire to become a priest, it was found possible to let him commence his education by walking more than four miles daily for half a year. The other half, in Spring and Summer, was spent in the fields. The day before he entered the seminary, his mother, laying her hands on his shoulders as he stood robed in his clerical dress, said: To see you dressed in this manner fills my heart with joy; but remember that it is not the dress that gives honor to the state, but the practice of virtue. If at any time you come to doubt your vocation, I beseech you, lay it aside at once. I would rather have a poor peasant for my son than a negligent priest. When you came into the world I consecrated you to Our Lady; when you began to study I bade you honor her and have recourse to her in all your difficulties; now I beg you to take her for your Queen. Today the motto on the Salesian coat of arms: Da mihi animas cetera tolle tibi Give me only souls and keep all the rest, bears witness to the fidelity of Don Bosco to the words of a truly Christian mother. The admirable Apostle of Youth is almost our contemporary. He founded the Salesian Society of St. Francis de Sales and the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians. His life s work was consecrated to the care of young boys and girls. He died in 1888, and was canonized by Pope Pius XI in PRAYER God of mercy, You called St. John Bosco to be a father and teacher of the young. Grant that inspired by his ardent charity we may serve You alone and never tire of bringing others to Your Kingdom. Amen. ST. BLAISE Bishop & Martyr The blessing of throats, invoking the intercession of St. Blaise, is a very popular devotion. St. Blaise, Bishop and Martyr, devoted the early years of his life to the study of philosophy and afterward became a physician. He was ordained to the priesthood and made Bishop of Sebaste in Armenia, where he was seized and carried off to prison by Agricolous, the Governor. On his way to prison, a distracted mother whose child was suffering from a disease of the throat implored his aid. At his intercession the child was cured, and since that time his aid have often been solicited in cases of a similar disease. After cruel tortures the saint was beheaded in the year 316. Through his intercession many have been cured of throat diseases or protected from them. The priest in giving the blessing of St. Blaise holds two candles in the form of a cross touching the throat, and prays that through the merits and intercession of St. Blaise the person blessed may be delivered from throat diseases and from every other evil. The priest says: Through the merits and intercession of St. Blaise, Bishop and Martyr, may God deliver you from all diseases of the throat, and from every other evil. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. PRAYER Lord, hear Your people through the intercession of St. Blaise. Help us to enjoy peace in this life and find a lasting refuge in the next. Amen.

7 Page 8 Our Faith HOLINESS IS ORDINARY Each year in early to mid-january, the Church s celebration of Christmas comes to a close, meaning that we now find ourselves in what the English-speaking world calls Ordinary Time. The priests return to wearing green vestments; we hear a continuous flow of the Gospel readings from Sunday to Sunday; and hymn choices switch out of holiday mode. Yet, if we were to look at a missal or breviary in Latin or from before the liturgical reforms following Vatican II, we would be hard pressed to find the phrase Tempus Ordinarium. The Latin instead reads Tempus per annum or the time during the year. Why do we call it ordinary, then? Instead of getting into the often fiery debates of translation, let s look at a less well-known text that teaches us about the liturgy: The Ceremonial of Bishops. Apart from those seasons having their own distinctive character, thirty-three or thirty-four weeks remain in the yearly cycle that do not celebrate a particular element of the mystery of Christ. Rather, especially on the Sundays, these weeks are devoted to the mystery of Christ in its entirety. This period is known as Ordinary Time. (ch. 13, n. 377) Our everyday use of ordinary means commonplace or standard, not special. The Church tells us that the ordinary of Ordinary Time is the celebration of the mystery of Christ in its entirety. In other words, the normal life of the Church is the entire mystery of Jesus Christ, which Christ himself pours forth into our lives by the liturgy. In Lent, we consider the temptations of Jesus, the suffering and passion he endured. During Easter, we contemplate the glorious life of the Resurrection and the world to come. In Advent, we prepare for the glorious and terrible second coming and for the celebration of the first. At Christmas, we revel in the mystery of the Incarnation of the Eternal Son. Ordinary Time does not have such a focus, but widens our view to the whole Christ, present in each of those mysteries and working in our lives today. So what do we make of the ordinary of Ordinary Time? By celebrating the entire mystery of Christ, we are reminded that Christ does not reserve his grace like a miser, limiting his gifts to Lent or Easter or other particular weeks of the year. Ordinary Time is not a meaningless period between the Advent/Christmas cycle and the Lent/Easter cycle, filled haphazardly with celebrations that simply do not fit elsewhere. It is a time for us to learn to live in grace as our new normal, for the whole mystery of Christ to take hold of us in every aspect of our lives. Holiness is not reduced to an uninteresting ordinary. The ordinary, rather, is caught up into the mystery of the Holy. ( Elijah Dubak, O.P.) PRAYER TO CHRIST IN THE WORLD Lord Jesus, let us realize that every action of ours no matter how small or how secular enables us to be in touch with you. Let our interest lie in created things - but only in absolute dependence upon your presence in them. Let us pursue you and you alone through the reality of created things. Let this be our prayer - to become closer to You by becoming more human. Let us become a tree branch on the vine that is you, a branch that bears much fruit. let us accept you in our lives in the way it pleases you to come into them: as Truth, to be spoken, as Life to be lived, as Love, to be followed, as Joy, to be given, as Peace, to be spread about, as Sacrifice, to be offered, among our relatives as friends, among our neighbors and all people. Amen.
