4 Page 5 P A R I S H H A P P E N I N G S The Annual Catholic Appeal IN ACTION! The following are examples of ministries made possible through your generous support. We will highlight these ministries in our bulletin on a weekly basis. EVANGELIZATION Every person belongs to a family. Families are the foundation of the Catholic parish. In the midst of the family and the parish community, people encounter Christ and learn to be his disciples. Family and Parish are the primary environments in which evangelization takes place. Together in Mission is a tool to support these evangelization efforts. Your gift promotes individuals and family and family life. Youth events and service opportunities, young adult gatherings, marriage prep, baptismal prep, ministry to separated and divorced persons are just a few of the services offered. EVANGELIZATION-PASTORAL CARE Rooted in the Gospel invitation to share in the healing mission of Jesus Christ, we advance the compassionate and competent spiritual, pastoral and sacramental care of God s suffering people by resourcing the clergy, pastoral ministers, healthcare professionals and caregivers who serve them. Those who offer pastoral care communicate God s love and compassion person-to-person by offering spiritual and sacramental support, including the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick offered by a priest. We connect with healthcare institutions, medical professionals, chaplains and clergy by providing extensive consultation and resources for the holistic health and well-being of Catholic patients. Your gift helps you to live and spread the Gospel. SUNDAY SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS Please feel free to drop in our weekly Sunday Reflection Group offered on Thursday from 1:00 2:30 P.M. in the Chapel. Each week the Word of God proclaimed to us in the readings at Sunday Mass are discussed and shared for a deeper understanding of how God is speaking to us. Handouts of the Scriptures are distributed so there s no need to bring anything except for yourself and a friend. We look forward to seeing you! BIBLE TIMELINE STUDY GROUP Please note that the study sessions have been moved from Tuesdays to Mondays to better accommodate the size of the group. The first session is now scheduled for Monday, March 11th from 1:00-3:00 P.M. in the Parish Hall. Study sets for our Bible Timeline Study Group are available for registered participants and may be picked up at the Parish Office during the week. Payment of $25.00 can be made at that time or on the first day of class. See you on March 11th at 1:00 P.M! ST. MAXIMILIAN KOLBE BAKE SALE Be sure to mark your calendar for our next Bake Sale on Saturday and Sunday, April 13th/14th, These homemade delights are sure to pleasing as we prepare for Easter Sunday. 5 Page 6 The Penitential Season of Lent During the days and weeks of penance that lie ahead from Ash Wednesday, March 6, 2019 until Holy Thursday, April 18, 2019, the Catholic Church throughout the world commemorates the penitential season of Lent. The model Jesus gave us for these forty days was his own experience in the desert in the desert and the temptations that followed him where he encountered Satan face-toface. And yet, Jesus, there in the desert alone, fasting and in intense prayer beat back the devil and triumphed over temptation, as strong as unrelenting as it was throughout those forty days. We enter the desert of Lent like Jesus, led by the Holy Spirit, to face our devils, our temptations head on. But we are not alone. The Lord Jesus Christ is with us. And so, too, is the Church, the entire community of faith observing Lent. Here is what the Catholic Church in the United States requires of us as baptized Catholics: The days of FAST (only one full meal) and ABSTINENCE (no meat) are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. No dispensations are granted on these solemn days except for reason of sickness of those provided in canon law below. All other Fridays of Lent are days of ABSTINENCE (no meat). Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to FAST (only one full meal) as above. From the age of 14, people are also obliged to ABSTAIN (no meat: this obligation prohibits the eating of meat, but not eggs, milk products or condiments of any kind, even though made from animal fat). The obligation to observe the laws of fast and abstinence is a serious one for Catholics. Failure to observe one penitential day in itself is not considered a serious sin. It is the failure to observe any penitential days at all, or a substantial number of penitential days, that must be considered serious. As we prepare for the resurrection of Jesus Christ at Easter we want to be ready to accept His love and be able to do whatever He asks of us. In order to do so, the Church encourages the parish community to come together to hear the Word of God, to pray and to sing in a formal liturgy called the Rite of Penance (Penance Service). With song, prayer and scripture we ready ourselves for the opportunity for private confession and absolution. ST. MAXIMILIAN KOLBE CHURCH Wednesday, April 10th, :00 P.M. 1:30 P.M. ST. 8 Page 9 DIOCESAN TRAINING OPPORTUNTIES D I O C E S A N F A I T H T R A I N I N G O P P O R T U N I T I E S ADULT FAITH FORMATION MINISTRY TRAINING The Department of Evangelization and Family Life of the Diocese of Trenton is inviting parishioners of all parishes to attend the Adult Faith Formation Ministry Training. Beginning on March 16th, 2019, from 9:00 a.m. 1:30 p.m., THE DIOCESE WILL OFFER A THREE-PART TRAINING SERIES ON ADULT FAITH FORMATION in the chancery located in Trenton. Each of the three days (March 16th, April 13th and May 4th) promises to be a day of full learning and sharing opportunities. In this training you will find ways for making your own faith and the faith of others stronger as we support one another in moving forward in the essential mission of the Church, evangelization. For more information please pick up a flyer located in the display case in the church vestibule. The $40 registration fee will be paid by the parish. Beverages are provided at the conference. RELA- TIONSHIP SKILLS FOR EFFECTIVE MINISTRY The Diocese of Trenton is also pleased to begin a two-part training session (June 12th and June 26th, 2019) to help train those in Adult Faith Formation ministry. This training is located at St. David the King Church, 1 New Village Road, Princeton, NJ. The first session (June 12th) entitled Listening focuses on the process of entering the world of the other person in their uniqueness, so that both the speaker and listener become more fully aware of the presence of God in their Lives. Part Two, entitled Collaboration helps to identify the challenges and opportunities for conversion in choosing collaboration. Flyers are also available in the display case in the church vestibule. The $30 registration fee will also be paid by the parish. Breakfast and lunch will be served on both days. This is a wonderful opportunity for those who feel they are being called to lead our community in various spiritual ways, prayer and faith sharing groups, catechesis or simply building a foundation for a ministry that you want to belong to. A great thing about these workshops is that you don t have to do it alone. Attending with others will not only be enjoyable but informative. So, please consider extending the invitation to others. If you are interested, please inform Fr. Vince so that payment can be made.
