I also believe that You have mercifully arranged that this process of purification can be aided by the prayers of the living, especially the Eucharist. Help me to pray for my brothers and sisters who have departed from this world. May their time of purification be short and they be quickly guided into that holy light promised by our Lord to Abraham and his descendants. I offer You sacrifices and prayers of praise. Accept them for all the souls of the faithful departed and admit them all to heavenly joy. Amen Please join us in praying for the intentions mentioned in this bulletin SPECIAL INTENTIONS WEEK of February 16, 2019 to February 22, 2019 Sanctuary Candle-Church Rev. Francis E. 4 Page 5 P A R I S H H A P P E N I N G S FROM THE OFFICE OF BISHOP DAVID O CONNELL 2019 ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: Pope St. Paul VI once said, Never reach out your hand unless you are willing to extend an arm. With these words, he challenges us to do all we can to build up the Body of Christ in our communities and provide assistance to those in need. He urges us to offer our help with free hearts and a generous spirit, withholding nothing in our efforts. Together, we as the Diocese of Trenton, have been able to embrace that challenge by providing the essential ministries, programs and services that made a critical difference in the lives of so many through the Annual Catholic Appeal. Keeping in mind the words of Pope St. Paul VI, I ask that you prayerfully consider a gift to the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal so we, together, may continue the work of strengthening parish and family life, evangelizing our community and our world, and reaching out to those in need with love and compassion. With a grateful heart, I pray the Lord will guide you in all that you do, will be your courage when strength is needed, and be your joy in all times. Gratefully yours in Christ, Most Reverend David O Connell, C.M. Bishop of Trenton Next weekend is Pledge Sunday for the Annual Catholic Appeal throughout the Diocese of Trenton. Each year the Bishop seeks the support of all the members of the diocese to further the work of our ministries. Each of us has a vital part in all we do in Christ s name, and each of us can share in all we do with a gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal. Our single Act of Faith propels the works of love that build up our Church. You make that happen with a generous gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal. This year St. Maximilian Kolbe s share of the goal is $70,000. As the people of the Diocese of Trenton, you have an opportunity to help others see Christ working in our midst. I ask you to take a moment and truly reflect on any help you can give. We truly need everyone to participate. The year we again are striving to reach our goal of $7 million. I am always grateful and moved by the level of support you give to our parish. I thank you for this support, and may God continue to bless you and your family. Blessings, Fr. Steve

7 Page 8 The Life of Jesus Luke 6:17, Jesus came down with the twelve and stood on a stretch of level ground with a great crowd of his disciples and a large number of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon. And raising his eyes toward his disciples he said: Blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours. Blessed are you who are now hungry, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who are now weeping, for you will laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude and insult you, and denounce your name as evil on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice and leap for joy on that day! Behold, your reward will be great in heaven. For their ancestors treated the prophets in the same way. But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. Woe to you who are filled now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will grieve and weep. Woe to you when all speak well of you, for their ancestors treated the false prophets in this way. SUNDAY SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS Please feel free to drop in our weekly Sunday Reflection Group offered on Thursday from 1:00 2:30 P.M. in the Chapel. Each week the Word of God proclaimed to us in the readings at Sunday Mass are discussed and shared for a deeper understanding of how God is speaking to us. Handouts of the Scriptures are distributed so there s no need to bring anything except for yourself and a friend. We look forward to seeing you! BIBLE TIMELINE STUDY GROUP Study sets for our Bible Timeline Study Group are available for registered participants and may be picked up at the Parish Office during the week. Payment of $25.00 can be made at that time or on the first day of class. See you on March 12th! Stewardship Prayer Loving Father, You alone are the source of every good gift. We praise You for all Your gifts to us, and we thank you for Your abundant generosity. Everything we have, and all that we are, comes from You. Help us be grateful and responsible. We commit ourselves to being good stewards. Help us develop and share Your gifts with others as You have generously shared Yourself with us. We make this prayer through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen (Daniel Conway, Advancing the Mission of the Church)

8 Page 9 LIVES OF THE SAINTS Occasionally in this space will appear a short article covering the lives of the saints, especially with reference to those saints whose likeness appear on the stained glass windows in the church and chapel, or whose statue is present in the chapel area or the candle room area. LIVES OF THE SAINTS May the wisdom of the Saints inspire us in our daily lives: Feb 17 Seven Founders of the Order of Servites Feb 18 St. Marie Bernadette Soubirous, Virgin Feb 19 St. Conrad of Piacenza, Hermit Feb 20 St. Eucherius, Bishop Sts. Jacinta & Francisco Marto Feb 21 St. Peter Damian, Bishop & Doctor of the Church Feb 22 Chair of St. Peter the Apostle Feb 23 St. Polycarp, Bishop & Martyr ST. MARIE BERNADETTE SOUBIROUS Virgin St. Marie Bernadette Soubirous was born on January 7, 1844, in Lourdes, France. At 14 years of age she witnessed 18 apparitions of Our Blessed Lady at Lourdes, instructing her to make known the miraculous healing powers which the Blessed Virgin, by her presence, would give to the waters at Lourdes. In 1866, St. Bernadette joined the Sisters of Charity at Nevers, taking her perpetual vows in Her contemporaries admired her humility and the authentic character of testimony about the appearance of the Blessed Virgin. Nevertheless she had to endure many severe trials during her religious life and exhibited heroic patience in sickness. She realized that the healing spring was not for her, and was fond of saying: The Blessed Virgin used me as a broom to remove dust. When the work is finished, the broom is placed behind the door and left there. She died on April 16, 1879 at the age of 35 and was canonized by Pope Pius XI on December 8, PRAYER Lord God, You showered heavenly gifts on St. Bernadette. Help us to imitate her virtues during our earthly life and enjoy eternal happiness with her in heaven. STS. JACINTA & FRANCISCO MARTO Between May 13 and October 13, 1917, three Portuguese shepherd children from Aljustrel, received apparitions of Our Lady at Cova da Iria, near Fátima, a city 110 miles north of Lisbon. At that time, Europe was involved in an extremely bloody war. Portugal itself was in political turmoil, having overthrown its monarchy in 1910; the government disbanded religious organizations soon after. At the first appearance, the Virgin Mary asked the children to return to that spot on the thirteenth of each month for the next six months. She also asked them to learn to read and write and to pray the rosary to obtain peace for the world and the end of the war. They were to pray for sinners and for the conversion of Russia, which had recently overthrown Czar Nicholas II and was soon to fall under communism. Up to 90,000 people gathered for the Virgin Mary s final apparition on October 13, Less than two years later, St. Francisco died of influenza in his family home. He was buried in the parish cemetery and then re-buried in the Fátima basilica in St. Jacinta died of influenza i n L i s b on i n , o f f e r i n g h e r suffering for the conversion of sinners, peace in the world, and the Holy Father. She was re-buried in the Fátima basilica in Their cousin Lúcia dos Santos, became a Carmelite nun and was still living when Jacinta and Francisco were beatified in 2000; she died five years later. Pope Francis canonized the younger children on his visit to Fátima to commemorate the t h a n n i v e r s a r y o f t h e f i r s t apparition on May 13, The shrine of Our Lady of Fátima is visited by up to 20 million people a year.
