5 Page 6 The Life of Jesus Mark 1:40-45 A leper came to Jesus and kneeling down begged him and said, "If you wish, you can make me clean." Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand, touched him, and said to him, "I do will it. Be made clean." The leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean. Then, warning him sternly, he dismissed him at once. He said to him, "See that you tell no one anything, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses prescribed; that will be proof for them." The man went away and began to publicize the whole matter. He spread the report abroad so that it was impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly. He remained outside in deserted places, and people kept coming to him from everywhere. 6 Page 7 LIVES OF THE SAINTS Occasionally in this space will appear a short article covering the lives of the saints, especially with reference to those saints whose likeness appear on the stained glass windows in the church and chapel, or whose statue is present in the chapel area or the candle room area. LIVES OF THE SAINTS May the wisdom of the Saints inspire us in our daily lives: 11 Our Lady of Lourdes 12 St. Saturninus & Companions, Martyrs St. Apollonia 13 St. Catherine DeRicci, Virgin St. Giles Mary of St. Joseph 14 Sts. Cyril, Monk & Methodius, Bishop St. Valentine, Priest & Martyr 15 St. Claude de la Columbiere, Priest 16 St. Onesimus, Martyr St. Gilbert of Sempringham, Priest 17 Seven Founders of the Order of Servites OUR LADY OF LOURDES On December 8, 1854, Pope Pius IX proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception in the apostolic constitution Ineffabilis Deus. A little more than three years later, on ruary 11, 1858, a young lady appeared to St. Bernadette Soubirous. This began a series of visions. During the apparition on March 25, the lady identified herself with the words: I am the Immaculate Conception. St. Bernadette was a sickly child of poor parents. Their practice of the Catholic faith was scarcely more than lukewarm. St. Bernadette could pray the Our Father, the Hail Mary and the Creed. She also knew the prayer of the Miraculous Medal: O Mary conceived without sin. During interrogations St. Bernadette gave an account of what she saw. It was something white in the shape of a girl. She used the word aquero, a dialect term meaning this thing. It was a pretty young girl with a rosary over her arm. Her white robe was encircled by a blue girdle. She wore a white veil. There was a yellow rose on each foot. A rosary was in her hand. St. Bernadette was also impressed by the fact that the lady did not use the informal form of address (tu), but the polite form (vous). The humble virgin appeared to a humble girl and treated her with dignity. Through that humble girl the Virgin Mary revitalized and continues to revitalize the faith of millions of people. People began to flock to Lourdes from other parts of France and from all over the world. In 1862 Church authorities confirmed the authenticity of the apparitions and authorized the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes for the diocese. The Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes has become a place of pilgrimage and healing, but even more of faith. Church authorities have recognized over 60 miraculous cures, although there have probably been many more. To people of faith this is not surprising. It is a continuation of Jesus healing miracles now performed at the intercession of his mother. Some would say that the greater miracles are hidden. Many who visit Lourdes return home with renewed faith and a readiness to serve God in their needy brothers and sisters. There still may be people who doubt the apparitions of Lourdes. Perhaps the best that can be said to them are the words that introduce the film The Song of Bernadette: For those who believe in God, no explanation is necessary. For those who do not believe, no explanation is possible. PRAYER Merciful God, come to the aid of our frailty. May we who keep the memory of the Immaculate Mother of God, rise from our iniquities with the help of her intercession. Amen. ST. VALENTINE Priest & Martyr St. Valentine, a Roman priest, together with St. Marius and his family, assisted the martyrs who suffered during the reign of Emperor Claudius II in the 3rd century. Being apprehended, he was sent to the Prefect of Rome, who commanded that he be beaten with clubs and afterward beheaded. He suffered martyrdom about the year 270. The custom of sending valentines on this day is the revival of an ancient pagan practice, which consisted in boys drawing the names of girls in honor of their goddess, ruata Juno, on ruary 15th. To abolish this practice names of saints were substituted on billets drawn upon this day.

7 Page 8 Our Faith FROM THE OFFICE OF BISHOP DAVID O CONNELL 2018 ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ, It s never easy to ask people for financial support, no matter how good or worthy the cause. You would think that, by now, I d be used to it, given that I ve had a lot of practice here as Bishop and during my many years as a university president. In both cases, I believed deeply in the reasons prompting my asking people for help. In the university, however, there was a regular revenue stream to support the activities of the institution, never enough of course. In the Diocese, most of our activities and operations depend primarily upon the kindness and generosity of the faithful we try to serve without a regular source of revenue to offset steadily increasing expenses. As your Bishop, I have tried to be a watchful, careful steward. I turn to you once again, as I do every year at this time, to seek your help so that the Diocese, in turn, can serve you and so many faithful throughout the four counties. It would be much harder to do this if I didn't believe so deeply in what we do in the Diocese. The goals and the vision that supports them are, simply stated, handing on the Gospel and our Catholic faith through the Church s ministries what the Church calls evangelization. Every generous contribution and sacrifice made by you to the Annual Catholic Appeal strengthens the ability of the Diocese to preach, live and witness to the Gospel of Christ in word AND in action. If that means something to you as a Catholic, I invite you to be generous once again as you have been before. The longer I am your Bishop, the clearer it becomes that real evangelization can take place with God s grace and your involvement. It is said that Pope St. John Paul II told us what to do; Pope Benedict XVI told us why; and Pope Francis tells us to just do it! Can you, will you help me? Gratefully yours in Christ, Most Reverend David M. O Connell, C.M. Bishop of Trenton ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL VIDEO The Annual Catholic Appeal video will be shown during all Masses the weekend of ruary 17th -18th, We thank you in advance for your support! BE FAITHFUL TO THE GOSPEL Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel. These are the words most often used as we are signed with ashes. It is a call to conversion, a call to follow Christ, a call to change our lives. No one heard this call and followed it more devotedly than St. Francis o Assisi. He began with the most basic interpretation of a text, but he didn t stop there. He began by throwing aside his tunic, shoes, and walking staff, but over time discovered the many ways in which possessions can keep us from seeking God. He began by carrying stones and fitting them into the crumbling walls of Assisi s churches, but over time he inspired his followers to reinvigorate the Church. PRAY WITH ST. FRANCIS Most High, Glorious God, bring light to the darkness of my heart, give me right faith, certain hope, and perfect charity. Amen ASH WEDNESDAY SCHEDULE Wednesday, ruary 14, :00 A.M. Mass 8:30 A.M. Mass 12:00 P.M. Mass 5:00 P.M. Communion Service * Please note that confessions will not be heard on Ash Wednesday. *
