5 Page 6 The Life of Jesus Matthew 21:28-32 ST. MAXIMILIAN KOLBE COUNTRY SUNDAY DANCE! Jesus said to the chief priests and elders of the people: "What is your opinion? A man had two sons. He came to the first and said, 'Son, go out and work in the vineyard today.' He said in reply, 'I will not, ' but afterwards changed his mind and went. The man came to the other son and gave the same order. He said in reply, 'Yes, sir, 'but did not go. Which of the two did his father's will?" They answered, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Amen, I say to you, tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you. When John came to you in the way of righteousness, you did not believe him; but tax collectors and prostitutes did. Yet even when you saw that, you did not later change your minds and believe him." 6 Page 7 LIVES OF THE SAINTS Occasionally in this space will appear a short article covering the lives of the saints, especially with reference to those saints whose likeness appear on the stained glass windows in the church and chapel, or whose statue is present in the chapel area or the candle room area. LIVES OF THE SAINTS May the wisdom of the Saints inspire us in our daily lives: 1 St. Therese of Lisieux, Doctor of the Church 2 The Holy Guardian Angels 3 St. Gerard of Brogne, Abbot St. Theodora Guerin 4 St. Francis of Assisi 5 St. Flora, Virgin St. Maria Faustina Kowalska 6 St. Bruno, Priest 7 Our Lady of the Rosary ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI Francis Bernardone, the founder of the three Franciscan Orders, was born at Assisi, Italy in His father was a wealthy merchant of the town. During a year s imprisonment at Perugia due to his participation as a knight in an unsuccessful campaign against that town, and again during a prolonged severe illness, St. Francis became aware of a vocation to a life of extraordinary service to the Church of Christ. Inspired at the age of 25 by the Scripture passage of Matthew commanding the disciples to evangelize the world without possessions, St. Francis abandoned his affluent way of life and began to live a life of radical poverty. Disinherited by his father, St. Francis went away penniless to live a life that was poorer than the poor whom he served. His example soon drew followers to his way of life. Three years later, in 1210, when his companions numbered twelve, he sought and received approval of Pope Innocent III to lead a life according to the Rule of the Holy Gospel, and they became a band of roving preachers of Christ in simplicity and lowness. Up and down the extent of Italy the brothers summoned the people to faith and penitence; they refused even corporate ownership of property, human learning, and ecclesiastical preferment. St. Francis himself never became a priest out of humility, and at first only some of his band were in Holy Orders. St. Francis practice of evangelical poverty and devotion to the humanity of Christ warmed the hearts of many and soon a vast Franciscan movement was sweeping through Europe. To accommodate this religious revival, St. Francis founded a Second Order through St. Claire of Assisi for cloistered nuns and a Third Order for religious and laity of both sexes. St. Francis devotion to the Passion of Christ prompted him to make a missionary journey to the Holy Land. Worn out by his tremendous apostolic efforts, pained by the stigmata he had received in 1224, and blinded by eye disease, St. Francis died at sunset on ober 3, 1226, while singing the eight verse of Psalm 142: Lead me forth from prison that I may give thanks to Your Name. PRAYER God, You enabled St. Francis to imitate Christ by his poverty and humility. Walking in St. Francis footsteps, may we follow Your Son and be bound to You by a joyful love. Amen. ST. MARIA FAUSTINA KOWALSKA Saint Faustina s name is forever linked to the annual feast of the Divine Mercy, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, and the Divine Mercy prayer recited each day at 3:00 p.m. by many people. Born on August 25, 1905 in what is now westcentral Poland, Helena Kowalska was the third of 10 children. She worked as a housekeeper in three cities before joining the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in She worked as a cook, gardener and porter in three of their houses. In addition to carrying out her work faithfully, generously serving the needs of the sisters and the local people, Sister Faustina also had a deep interior life. This included receiving revelations from the Lord Jesus, messages that she recorded in her diary at the request of Christ and of her confessors. At a time when some Catholics had an image of God as such a strict judge that they might be tempted to despair about the possibility of being forgiven, Jesus chose to emphasize his mercy and forgiveness for sins acknowledged and confessed. I do not want to punish aching mankind, he once told Saint Faustina, but I desire to heal it, pressing it to my merciful heart. The two rays emanating from Christ s heart, she said, represent the blood and water poured out after Jesus death; but because Sister Maria Faustina knew that the revelations she had already received did not constitute holiness itself, she wrote in her diary: Neither graces, nor revelations, nor raptures, nor gifts granted to a soul make it perfect, but rather the intimate union of the soul with God. These gifts are merely ornaments of the soul, but constitute neither its essence nor its perfection. My sanctity and perfection consist in the close union of my will with the will of God. Sister Maria Faustina died of tuberculosis in Krakow, Poland, on ober 5, Pope John Paul II beatified her in 1993, and canonized on April 30, 2000.

7 Page 8 Our Faith 100th ANNIVERSARY OF THE APPEARANCE OF FATIMA ROSARY RALLY AT ST. MAXIMILIAN KOLBE CHURCH OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY On ober 7th, 1951, the first Sunday of ober, Don Juan of Austria gained his famous naval victory over the Turks at Lepanto. In thanksgiving to this event, which he attributed to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin through the recitation of the Holy Rosary, St. Pius V instituted an annual feast under the title of Our Lade of Victory. His immediate successor, Gregory XIII, changed the title to that of the Rosary, and granted its Office to all churches in which there was an altar dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary. In 1716, the army of Emperor Charles VI, under Prince Eugene, gained a remarkable victory over the Turks near Belgrade, on the Feast of Our Lady of the Snows, at a time when the members of the Society of the Holy Rosary were offering solemn prayers in Rome. Soon after, the Turks were forced to raise the siege of Corcyra, Clement XI, in memory of this, extended the feast of the Most Holy Rosary to the Universal Church. Benedict XIV caused an account of all this to be inserted into the Roman Breviary, and Leo XIII raised the feast to the rank of a feast of the second class. He also added to the Litany of Loreto the invocation: Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, pray for us. In 1961, the title of this feast became: Our Lady of the Rosary. According to a venerable tradition, the devotion of the Holy Rosary was revealed to St. Dominic by the Blessed Virgin. PRAYER God, fill us with Your grace. We know the Incarnation of Your Son by the message of an Angel. Through the intercession of Mary may we obtain the glory of resurrection through Christ s Passion and Cross. Join the Knights of Columbus (Council 10899), Columbiettes, Rosary Altar Society and the Legion of Mary on Saturday, ober 14, 2017 after the 8:30 A.M. Mass at St. Maximilian Kolbe Church, in front of the Blessed Mother Grotto. This year we are commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun at Fatima seeking Mary s intercession and blessings! Millions within the United States are gathering for the recitation of the rosary during the annual Rosary Rally. The objective is to pray for Our Lady s intercession for the conversion of sinners and protection of our country. Additionally, for fallen away Catholics, reparation for the sin of abortion, honoring God publicly and preparing for Our Lady s Triumph. After the Rally, please join us for coffee and buns in the Parish Hall. THE ROSARY DECADE PRAYER The Blessed Mother stressed the critical importance of praying the rosary daily for the conversion of sinners and for peace in the world. She asked that the following prayer be recited at the end of each rosary decade: Oh My Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of Hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of Thy mercy.
