6 Page 7 LIVES OF THE SAINTS Occasionally in this space will appear a short article covering the lives of the saints, especially with reference to those saints whose likeness appear on the stained glass windows in the church and chapel, or whose statue is present in the chapel area or the candle room area. LIVES OF THE SAINTS May the wisdom of the Saints inspire us in our daily lives: Sept 10 St. Nicholas of Tolentine, Priest St. Thomas of Villanova, Archbishop Sept 11 St. Adelphus, Bishop Sept 12 The Most Holy Name of the Blessed Virgin Mary Sept 13 St. John Chrysostom, Bishop & Doctor of the Church Sept 14 The Exaltation of the Holy Cross Sept 15 Our Lady of Sorrows Sept 16 St. Cornelius, Pope & Martyr St. Ciprian, Bishop & Martyr THE EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS When the Sacred Body of Jesus was taken down from the Cross and carried to the grave on Calvary, the Cross on which He died was thrown into a ditch or well, and covered over with stones and earth, so that the followers of the Crucified Redeemer might not find it. Almost 300 years later (312 A.D.), Constantine the Great, not yet a Christian, while battling with Maxentius for the throne of the Roman Empire, prayed to the God of the Christians to aid him in his struggle. In answer to his prayer, a luminous cross or monogram of Christ appeared in the heavens bearing the inscription: In This Sign You Will Conquer. In gratitude for victory, under this banner, over Maxentius at the Milvian Bridge, on October 28, 312, Constantine had the Sign of Christianity placed on the Roman standards and on the shields of his soldiers. Then cane the finding of the True Cross at Jerusalem by St. Helena in 326, commemorated by a feast on May 3rd. In the year 614, Chosroes II, King of Persia, invaded Syria and Palestine; he took and sacked Jerusalem, carrying off with other treasures the great relic of the True Cross. The Emperor Heraclius of Constantinople, at the head of a large army invaded Persia, and forced the Persians to sue for peace and to restore the Sacred Cross, which Heraclius piously brought back to the Jerusalem in 629. When he reached the city gate on the way that led to Calvary, the Emperor laid aside every robe and mark of royalty, and, clothed in sackcloth of penance and barefoot, carried the Cross up the ascent of Calvary and restored it to its place in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. PRAYER: God, You willed that Your only Son should undergo crucifixion, to bring about the salvation of the human race. Grant that we who have known His mystery on earth may deserve to reap the rewards of redemption in heaven. Amen. OUR LADY OF SORROWS The object of this feast is to remind the faithful of the spiritual martyrdom of the Mother of God, and her compassion with the sufferings of her Divine Son. The seven great events of sorrow in her life were: Prophecy of Simeon, Flight into Egypt, Three Days Loss of Jesus, Meeting Jesus on the Way to Calvary, Mary at the Foot of the Cross, Jesus Taken Down from the Cross, and the Burial of Jesus. There was between Jesus and His Mother all that union and interchange of kinship and tender love which exists between a fond mother and her child. Added to this was the intense love with which she loved Him as her God, so that we may truly say there never could be a love between a human soul and God greater than the love between Jesus and Mary. To what shall we compare, to what shall we liken, the sorrows and sufferings of this Virgin daughter of Zion? Truly, her heart was filled with the reproaches of those who scoffed at and blasphemed her Son as she stood beneath His Cross of shame. Come, all who pass by the way, look and see whether there is any suffering like my suffering (Lamentations 1,12). PRAYER: God, You willed that the compassionate Mother of Your Son should stand near the Cross on which He was glorified. Grant that Your Church, having shared in Christ s Passion, may also participate in His Resurrection. Amen.

7 Page 8 Our Faith THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCHES OF TOMS RIVER Descriptive Statement Have you heard what s happening? Let me tell you what s happening! Several years ago, Bishop O Connell launched an initiative called Faith in Our Future that involved all of the 107 parishes in the Diocese. The effort was started to develop a plan for the Parishes working together, to prepare to adapt to the challenges and changes facing the Catholic Church in this area. Church attendance, participation in the Sacraments, enrollment in Catholic Education as well as the number of priests and clergy has all been declining. The practical results include the financial challenges facing many churches and Catholic institutions. In late 2015, the Faith in Our Future initiative began to involve parishes. Each parish identified a 5 member team to pull together information and study the issues. The teams were asked to put together recommendations for adapting to the challenges. The goals of the recommendations were to include 5 priorities: 1. Evangelization; 2. Collaboration; 3. Stewardship; 4. Accountability and 5. Service to those in need. All of this information was reported to the Diocese and the Bishop established a Commission to review the recommendations and findings. The Bishop and the Commission recommended that local parishes work together in groups called cohorts. Our cohort includes: St. Joseph, St. Justin, St. Luke and St. Maximilian Kolbe. The cohorts all developed plans and reviewed them with the Commission and we are now about to embark on the implementation of those plans. Some of the parishes and cohorts are facing very hard choices and in some cases consolidation and sharing of services and ministries will be needed. Fortunately, for us, our 4 cohort parishes are still rather strong and financially solid. Nonetheless, there is much work to do to turn around the negative trends and forces at work. Our cohort has decided to work together under the banner of The Roman Catholic Churches of Toms River. We are beginning to implement collaborative plans to work together to improve the state of the Catholic Church in this local area including increasing our focus on the growing Hispanic community. We are here today reporting to you what is happening and to seek your help. No, we are not asking for money, yet; but we do need your time and talent. Importantly, we need your ideas and energy. You will be hearing more about the implementation and The Roman Catholic Churches of Toms River over the future months and years. For anyone interested, I suggest you read about Faith in Our Future on the Diocese s website, which is You can find much more information and background there. For now we specifically need volunteers to help with the evangelization initiatives. Our cohort mission is to work to bring back into the church the many fallen away and inactive Catholics in Toms River and nearby. There are approximately 25,000 families registered in the 4 parishes, yet our records indicate only about 15% of those Catholics attend church on a regular basis. There are many souls that we want to help to develop a stronger and closer relationship with Jesus Christ, but we need your insights and help to know how to proceed in reaching out to these brothers and sisters in faith. Specifically, to determine an approach that will be meaningful for our mission. We have identified several initial groupings: 1. Recently married and new parents 2. Parents of Religious Education students 3. Parents of Catholic school students 4. Millennials (20 to 35 year olds) 5. Seniors and retirees Bishop O Connell wrote this about these inactive and fallen away Catholics: The Gospel has not changed; the Church s teachings have endured; and obligations incumbent upon Catholics for example, the commandment to keep holy the Sabbath - have remained in place, but their compelling importance in the daily life of Catholics today as diminished or, at least, wavered significantly. We need your help. As active Catholics with a strong relationship with Jesus, you can help us understand what we can do to connect with them and help them return to a stronger relationship with Jesus and His Church!
