ADULT EDUCATION SUNDAYS at NOON for Lent: St. James Chapel Embracing Forgiveness: On What It Is and What It Isn t A DVD Discussion conducted by Rev. Barbara Cawthorne Crafton in Five Sessions Led by Br. Jim Mahoney for people of all ages Each session will begin with a minute video presentation by Barbara Crafton, followed by filmed interaction with a small group of adult. Then our own group discusses the presentation. March 1: You have Heard It Said..But I say to you that Forgiveness is not forgetting it does not erase history, it is not acquittal or exoneration, forgiveness is not pardon. March 8: Chipping Away. What is the place of community in the project of forgiveness? Forgiveness is almost a gift of self-love. It is a gift to myself. March 15: How to Start Forgiveness Prayer is energy; prayer can flow through an opening which you create with just one word. March 22: Why Forgive? When we refuse to forgive, we shrink our world ; If you are in the spirit of creation, the spirit of flexibility living with the discomfort of that, you are able to grow, heal and become a new person.
5 Because He s Been There You ask, me, How do I know?? Because I saw it with my own eyes!! When we hear that statement, it lends high credibility to the story. When we ask how certain events occurred, we may hear statements that begin with, I think or Someone told me or even a What I would guess. However, when we speak to someone who was an eye-witness, we think differently. Whatever it is, we want to hear about it directly from the person who was there, someone who saw it with their own eyes and can tell us exactly what happened. Similarly, as we encounter different obstacles and challenges in our own lives, we often look to others to bounce things off of. We seek advice on issues and hope that someone has the insight to help. Although, many times, others can only speculate on what they think may be helpful advice. With sincere and genuine caring, they make their best attempt to point us in the right direction as we try to navigate through our latest puzzle in life. We look for help from those closest to us when we make mistakes, or feel that we ve failed ourselves or others. These are the times when we need a friend more than ever; the times when life s trials start to get the best of us and we need someone to open up to, someone to share our thoughts and feelings. Just like the eye-witness who saw it happen, ideally we d like to find a friend who has been there and experienced something similar to what we may be going through. Who can relate better to our situation than someone that has already lived it?? As we move through the Holy season of Lent, let s always keep in mind that at any time, we can turn to someone who fully understands our deepest thoughts and needs. When Jesus made the choice to die on the Cross for our sins, He experienced every emotion, struggle and sin that every one of us has ever experienced. He became the eye witness to all the events in our lives, and personally felt the emotions of each and every one of us. Jesus tells us in the Bible to turn to Him and tell Him everything, everything about our lives. He is the One faithful friend that will listen and renew our spirits with the love, understanding and guidance that only He can provide. Jesus came to us as our Lord in human form to live as we do and feel as we do. We can be completely confident in Him, always knowing our deepest needs and guiding us through our most difficult challenges. How can Jesus help us in every situation? The answer is simple,...because He s been there! Have a blessed Lenten Season, Dom Perfetti
6 CONFIRMATION AND BISHOP S VISITATION SUNDAY, APRIL 12th at 10:30 a.m. (one service only) The Bishop's visitation is an important event in the life of both the congregation and the diocese. The norm for every visit is for the Bishop to celebrate the Eucharist, preach, and preside at confirmation. The sacraments of initiation - baptism and confirmation - are customary at the time of visitation, but not necessary. Parishioners can also be presented for reception into the Episcopal Church and to reaffirm their faith. The bishop will also meet with the vestry, and review the books in which the parish records of baptisms, marriages, confirmations and burials are recorded. It is also very much the preference of the bishops to officiate only at the principal service at the time of the visitation. Confirmation In the sacramental rite of Confirmation, baptized persons are "confirmed" in the Christian faith with the laying on of hands by the bishop. Reception Those who have been confirmed in other denominations by a bishop in the historic succession (Roman Catholic, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, or Eastern Orthodox) may be received into the Episcopal Church by the bishop. Many people choose to be Received as a way of affirming their baptisms; of acceding a stronger affinity with the spirituality, ethos, practice, and sensibility of the Episcopal Church; and of ritually acknowledging a deeper, more mature faith commitment. Adults wishing to be Confirmed or Received should speak with Father Carl+ Our newest Bishop Allen Shin will be here for the Visitation. The Rt. Rev. Allen K. Shin was elected to be the diocese's new bishop suffragan on December 7, 2013, at a special election convention held at Manhattan s Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine, and was consecrated at the Cathedral on Saturday May 17, 2014.
7 STEWARDSHIP 2015 The Lenten season has arrived with the beginning on Ash Wednesday last month, During Lent we should all take time to look at our lives, who we have been, who we are, and who we are becoming. We so often become so habitual in the routines of our lives that we find ourselves shut off from what is new, what is challenging, what pushes us to the edge, what causes us to get excited. Lent offers each of us the opportunity to clear our minds and unlock the doors that keep us safe and stuck in the routines that are so familiar to us. Take time during Lent to consider how we are closed off to new experiences and begin to open up the walls that enclose us. It is a process of letting go of one s own life to a life of serving others. We must let go, and sacrifice, for our own sake. Sacrifice must be for and only for others. When our hearts have grown in compassion and love, we are willing to relinquish what seems important to our own preservation and happiness in order that someone else s life may be made richer by our own loss. Lent invites us to move to the edge of our own selfsatisfaction and step into the avenue of self- sacrifice. By this process we will jump into the blackness of sacrifice and there find the light that leads to a joyous Easter. Palm Sunday will be March 29 th. We will continue during the Sundays in March to introduce the organizations of St. James so that the members of St. James will know what they do and how you can join in and be good stewards of your time and talent. I ask everyone to keep their pledge up to date. It is never too late to make a commitment to support St. James for Consider giving your time and talent for the Community dinner held the last Saturday of the month. YOUR TALENT IS GOD S GIFT TO YOU WHAT YOU DO WITH THAT TALENT IS YOUR GIFT TO GOD Ed Fritsche, Stewardship Chairman
