1 The Tower Chimes The Newsletter of saintjames Episcopal Church + Goshen, New York stjamesgoshen@frontier.com Web-site: July August 2016 The Rev. M. Carl Lunden, Rector More Top Ten Reasons to be an Episcopalian (according to Father Tim Schenck of Forward Movement after the fashion of Robin Williams) 10. The only thing we take literally is "Coffee Hour." 9. All of the sacraments -- none of the indulgences. 8. Gay and straight God created them; gay and straight we marry them. 7. Bouncers don't check your ID at communion. 6. Fire and incense, not fire and brimstone. 5. Guilt-free royal watching -- because we're Anglicans. 4. Vestments cover a multitude of wardrobe malfunctions. 3. No "second collection." 2. Washington National Cathedral? Yeah, that's ours. And the Number One reason to be an Episcopalian: 1. We're the only ones God trusts enough to take the summer off. These are all rather cute, except for #1. It pokes fun at the fact that in the summer months Episcopalians tend to attend Church even more infrequently than the rest of the year. Sunday Worship is not an obligation, it is an opportunity. It is the weekly chance to be fed spiritually by hearing God s Word and receiving the Eucharist. It is the chance to bond to our brothers and sisters in the Body of Christ and to be encouraged and supported in our Christian life. Why would you want to miss that! Don t take the summer off from Church, come be blessed and a blessing to others! Father Carl+ Have a Safe and Joyful Summer!

2 GREAT AMERICAN WEEKEND FREE WATER BOTTLE GIVEAWAY MEET AND GREET On Saturday, July 2nd We will be out in front of Church giving away water and meeting people WE NEED VOLUNTEERS to join Father Carl and help! Help spread the GOOD NEWS! SEE SIGN UP ON THE PARISH BULLETIN BOARD

3 St. James Church THE TOWER CHIMES July-August 2016 The Power of the Son For the next couple of months, we ll be feeling the warm rays of the sun. It s summer, and hopefully we ll all get a chance to enjoy some time at the beach or the pool. Of course, it won t all be fun, I m sure there will be days when the sun will take its toll on us as we re mowing the lawn, pulling weeds and other chores that have us baking in the hottest days of summer. In any case, the power of the sun is amazing. Solar power is being developed and marketed more and more, and we can see an increase in solar panels everywhere we look. Homes are being converted from electric power to solar, many industries are installing solar panel farms. And as we drive the highways we can see how much solar power is being used for highway construction signs. The sun lights up our world, and I would not be surprised if in time, in the not too distant future, the majority of our power will come from the sun. Visualize our world where our cars have small solar panels that energize our cars instead of gas or electric. Picture our homes with one efficient solar panel, not yet developed, that can power every appliance and heating unit we have. These are just some of the thoughts that the energy of our sun can provide if science can find a way to efficiently harvest and harness the power from that giant yellow ball in the sky. The power is there; we just need to find a way to use it!! Tapping into the sun s vast source of energy is something that will intrigue and motivate scientists and researchers for years. And while that s going on, we all need to consider another powerful source of energy and power. As we live our lives, how many times do we feel we re out of gas? When our energy is simply depleted by the demands of the world? Where do we go to recharge our batteries and refill our tanks? Well, similar to how we look to energy sources to keep our physical world going, we need only to look toward the Son to keep our spiritual world going strong. God gave us His Son as an unending source of energy. Jesus is there for us every moment we feel weak. He s there to pick us up in tough times and rough times. Only He can lift us up from the depths we sometimes find ourselves in, and put us back on higher ground through His caring and love for us. Yes, Jesus is the source of our energy whenever we re facing difficult times. So often we look to ourselves and others to help resolve our issues, and although our Good Lord does send us His messengers to help comfort us, we still need to go straight to the source, which is Jesus Himself, waiting for us to call upon His name to renew our Faith, focus our thoughts on His Word and reenergize our lives to live out the purpose He intended for us. Life has its ups and downs, and when we feel we re getting run down, and lost in the valleys, let s remember to call upon the Lord. There s no greater source of energy than the power of the Son!! Enjoy the summer days, Dom Perfetti St. James Episcopal Church, Goshen, N.Y., established 1803

THE FEAST DAY OF SAINT JAMES THE APOSTLE SUNDAY, JULY 31st (transferred from July 25) This year we will start to celebrate our patronal feast day on the Sunday closet to the date. Wear red that Sunday in honor of St. James, The Apostle and Martyr. -Fr. Carl+ The feast of the patron saint or title of a church, school, religious order, or other organization. The custom of having a patron saint can be traced to the practice of building churches over the tombs of martyrs. Patron saints may be chosen for a variety of reasons. For example, a church that was founded on a saint's day might have that saint as patron. The patronal festival is usually the feast of the church or organization's title, but in some cases the patron is not mentioned in the title of the church or organization. The feast of a church's patron or title may be observed on or transferred to a Sunday, taking precedence over the usual Sunday observance in the calendar of the church year. This substitution may not be made in the seasons of Advent, Lent, or Easter (BCP, p. 16). The proper readings for a patronal feast may be used at the Consecration of a Church (BCP, p. 571). James, the brother of John, is often known as James the Greater, to distinguish him from the other Apostle of the same name, commemorated in the calendar with Philip, and also from James, the brother of our Lord. He was the son of a prosperous Galilean fisherman, Zebedee, and with his brother John left his home and his trade in obedience to the call of Christ. With Peter and John, he seems to have belonged to an especially privileged group, who Jesus chose to be witnesses of the Transfiguration, the raising of Jairus daughter, and the agony in the garden. Apparently, James shared John s hot-headed disposition, and Jesus nicknamed the brothers Boanerges (Sons of Thunder ). James expressed willingness to share the cup of Christ was realized in his being the first of the Apostles to die for him. As the Acts of the Apostles records, About that time Herod the King laid violent hands upon some who belonged to the Church. He killed James the brother of John with the sword (Acts 12:1-2). According to an old tradition, the body of James was taken to Compostela, Spain, which has been a shrine for pilgrims for centuries. Among the Spaniards, James is one of the most popular saints. In the Middle Ages, under the title of Santiago [which means Saint James in Spanish] de Compostela, his aid was especially invoked in the battle against the Moors.
