1 St. Luke s Times St. Luke s Episcopal Church A Word from the Rector M ar ch There s the old adage that March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. While this generally refers to the weather there are some parallels for our life in the church especially how the month will end. We will continue to observe Lent through most of the month. The Lenten series began in February and was very well attended. St. Luke s will be hosting on March 7, it then will be at Trinity Woodbridge on March 14 and finish on March 21 at St. James in Edison. Stations of the Cross continues to be offered every Friday at 7 pm. As I said March goes out like a lamb, as we close out the month observing Holy Week, beginning with Palm/Passion Sunday on the 25 th. The schedule will look the same as it did last year and you can find more information in this Newsletter. We also are having a Lenten Fish and Chips dinner on Friday March 18. Please see the flyer in this Newsletter. This is a great opportunity to invite a friend to experience the St. Luke s community. Speaking of inviting friends, one of the focuses of the coming year for our church will be inviting, welcoming and connecting. Kasi Legrand is chairing a group that will be exploring ways that we can become more intentional about inviting others to our church, welcoming though who walk through our doors, not only on Sundays but throughout the week, and hopefully connecting them into the life of our community. If you d like to be a part of that planning and please reach out to her. We also this month will sadly bid farewell to Deacon Carol Pepe who is resigning as our Deacon. Her last Sunday with us will be March 18. There will be a celebration of her ministry with us following the 10 am service. I personally will miss her, she has been a great colleague and friend and I wish her all the blessings as she moves forward. I hope to see many of you in church during the remainder of Lent and that you will take advantage of our Holy Week offerings. Yours in Christ, Fr. Ed+ Edmund W. Zelley, Rector Carol A. Pepe, Deacon Karl Watson, Organist & Choirmaster Julia Jenson, Director, Schola Cantorum Mark Edgecomb, Secretary Wardens, Kathy McNulty Debbie Wisniewski Vestry, Rosalie DiSimone-Weiss Jim Iacone Kasi LeGrand William (Bill) Noble George F. 2 2 What s Up Warden Beware the Ides of March..or shortly thereafter. Actually, it s not so much a beware as be aware. Two important activities/ministries will take place on the weekend following the Ides. On Friday, March 16 th, Saint Luke s annual Fish & Chips Dinner will be held. This tradition has roots that go back decades. Some of you may remember when the cooking was done in the kitchen and the entire campus reeked of fried cod for the next several days. Happily, Thistle Caterers now does all of the cooking in their mobile kitchen parked in our driveway. Tickets for this parish event can be purchased from Mark during office hours, or during coffee hour on Sunday mornings. If you are interested in selling or purchasing tickets, or volunteering to assist at the event, you may contact Debbie Wisniewski at dmw.warden@gmail.com. On Sunday, March 18 th at 3:00 pm the 2018 youth theater performance of School House Rock Live, Jr. will take place. The production is the result of Saint Luke s collaborative endeavor with Temple Emanu-El. Six of Saint Luke s young thespians are collaborating with young actors from Temple Emanu-El, and the community at large. They ve been in rehearsal since January 4 th, and with every opportunity I get to stop by and get a sneak peek I m blown away by the energy and enthusiasm the director and actors share for this production. I encourage you to come enjoy School House Rock Live, Jr., and support the youth of our community. Tickets are $5, and can be purchased at the door. Finally, thank you to Barbara Rivera and Katherine Young for their recently conclude service to the parish as members of the Vestry, and congratulations to Jim Iacone and Janice Stapley as they begin their service as Vestry members. We are all appreciative of their commitment to this vital ministry. I wish you all success in your Lenten devotions as we prepare for the events of Holy Week and Easter Peace~ Kathy The Bishop is Coming! Bishop Stokes will be with us on Sunday October 21 at 10 am to Confirm, Receive and Reaffirm. Anyone interested in being Confirmed, the minimum requirement is to have completed sixth grade, young people are also asked to write a no more than 1 page letter saying why you wish to be confirmed. Adults who were confirmed in a different denomination or were never confirmed should let Fr. Ed know of your interest as well. Classes will begin on March 18 at 1pm and will meet once a month until October.

5 As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, Follow me and I will make you fish for people. And immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him. Mark 1: This Lenten series, prepared for the Diocese of New Jersey by Rev. Marshall Shelly, Rector of St. Peter s Church, Spotswood, is intended to offer to faith communities an opportunity to delve more deeply into reflection and discernment on our mutual, common call to follow Jesus while at the same time becoming fishers of people. Faith cannot exist away from community, and it cannot be sustained without being offered. We will use a recommitment to daily prayer and meditation for individuals and households, coupled with community-focused time of weekly reflection on the broader calls and costs of discipleship. Each week in Lent will be designated with a particular theme: March 7 th : Casting Our Nets Trinity, Woodbridge March 14 th : Letting Go of Our Old Nets for New St. Luke s Metuchen March 21 st : Following, Immediately St. James, Edison Each week we will meet at 6:30pm for a soup dinner and class will be held from 7pm 8:30pm
