2 On My Heart and Mind So how is your Lent Madness score doing? Mine is terrible because I chose people by their quirky names like Christina the Astonishing ; I couldn t help myself, with a name like that, I had to vote for her. (I hope my basketball March Madness bracket will fare better; go Syracuse!) And how has Lent been going for you, particularly as we head into the homestretch? I know that I have struggled mightily with my chosen Lenten discipline to work on my impatience with impatient people. But that s the point, to at least struggle with it, rather than to say to myself: I am who I am and that s the way it is. For those of us who have more of a crash course mentality, we still have Holy Week with its powerful day by day, step by step, journey to the cross which is our opportunity to die to, to let go of, whatever is holding us back from being the kind of person we hope we can be. Please know that God is rooting for us; wanting us to be free, healthy, loving people. It s just that we hold onto stuff like resentment, woundedness, insult, not being good enough, and shame, often times because they have become familiar patterns of feeling and reacting. Holy Week calls us to trust Jesus and go to the cross to die to this stuff, to hand it over to God. And as we experience this happening to ourselves, this dying to feelings and behaviors that keep us from being all God wants us to be, we become heightened to pay attention to the poor, the suffering, and the war torn in this world. We become motivated to help bring God s love and justice, to become partners with God to bring in God s Kingdom. And then we know in our body, mind and spirit the truth of resurrection for ourselves and for all of God s creation. My love to you all, The Rev. We will provide updates monthly or more frequently as new information develops. Contact members of the Search Committee with your process questions. Your Search Committee continues to review candidate applications and conduct initial telephone interviews. We are also reviewing potential candidates who have been recommended by parishioners. If you are aware of clergy you believe would be a good candidate for St. Paul s, please speak to a member of the Search Committee and, if you have the opportunity, speak to that person and let them know that St. Paul s is searching. As we continue to work through this process we ask that everyone at St. Paul s continues to pray for the Search Committee and each candidate that we encounter. 3 SUNDAY 9AM FORUMS Sunday April 6: Dr. Poovey concludes his series on Church Music and Hymnody Sundays, May 4, 11, 18, 25, 9am Christ is Risen: Comparing Resurrection Stories in the Gospels Led by the Revs. Fred Reynolds & Jennifer Zogg LENTEN SERIES 2014 Thursday Evenings: April 3 & 10 6pm: Holy Eucharist, 6:30pm: Soup Supper 7pm: Program TED Talks and Faith: Video and Discussion We will watch 20 minute presentations by experts in their field from a worldwide program dedicated to spreading innovate ideas in science, technology, medicine, spirituality, creativity and education. Can you stay awake one hour?.. Holy Week Watch Jesus came and found them sleeping ; and he said to Peter, 'Simon are you asleep? Could you not keep awake for one hour?'... [Mark 14:37] Again this year during Holy Week we will be holding a Prayer Vigil from 8pm on Maundy Thursday through 3pm on Good Friday, the traditional hour of Jesus death. Just as Jesus asks his disciples to stay awake with him for just one hour in the Garden of Gethsemane the night before his death, we invite you to do so for an hour at St. Paul s this year. Those who took part last year were very moved by the experience. The vigil will be held in the Norton chapel. You can sign up on the poster in the Parish Hall where you will also find more details. An Affiliate of Family Promise Faithful Friends, We celebrate with you RAIHN s 10 th anniversary in April, During these 10 years, RAIHN has supported and offered rest and comfort for 297 families who were in the midst of some of the most difficult experiences of their lives. None of that would have been possible without you. The gifts you have offered our guests of friendship, shelter, security and food are immeasurable. Henri Nouwen has said Probably no word better summarizes the suffering of our times than the word homeless. It reveals one of our deepest and most painful conditions, the condition of not having a sense of belonging, of not having a place where we can feel safe, cared for, protected and loved. Words cannot express our gratitude for your sacrifice of energy, time and resources for the sake of so many of our Monroe County neighbors. At a time when so much or our lives are so busy that, understandably, we often search for opportunities to make them more convenient, your faithfulness is honorable. Feed the hungry, and help those in trouble. Then your light will shine out from the darkness, a dn the darkness around you will be as bright as noon. Sincerely, RAIHN Board of Directors Updates from Building Community (formerly Parish Life) Lenten Soup Suppers are well underway and we still need volunteers to help, especially with set up and providing extras like fruit and bread to go with soup. There is a sign up sheet in the Parish Hall, for anyone who is interested. A big thank you to everyone who has volunteered so far. If you have not already joined us for one of these evenings of delicious soup and thoughtful conversation, please consider doing so, even if you cannot assist. Some of you might have noticed the enhanced Sunday coffee hour, especially if you stay after the 10 AM service. The treats for these mornings have generously been provided by volunteers who are committed to the improvement of this opportunity for fellowship. If you have enjoyed the food and fellowship, please consider volunteering to provide a treat or two one week. Weeks are divided, so no one has to take sole responsibility (unless you want to!) Check out the sign up sheet in the Parish Hall. If you have not stayed, consider doing so. You might be pleasantly surprised! Finally, Building Community is seeking to put together a committee of individuals committed to building community at St. Paul's. We are looking to include representatives from other groups who have historically been involved with community events, as well as anyone else who is willing to help take on the social life of our church community. Rejoice, Spring is Here! Spring is in the air and it's time to take the children in our care outside for more and more of the day. Our playground is coming alive with the sound of children laughing as they reach, swing and climb, run and jump. St. Paul's is blessed to have a beautiful and very walkable neighborhood where our children can explore nature's wonders: gracious old trees, ever blooming flowers and chirping birds (as well as the worms they eat). The fine weather will once again let us resume our "discovery" walks to nearby museums where our children will star gaze at the planetarium, enjoy the latest interactive exhibits at the Museum and Science Center, learn more about photography at George Eastman House and explore the sculpture installations at the Memorial Art Gallery. Let our children's laughter and wonder spread to your hearts. When you see them, be sure to smile and thank God for the joy of little children.
