1 Saint Mark S EpiScopal pro-cathedral 422 North Burlington Hastings, Nebraska The Rt. Rev. J. Scott Barker, Bishop The Very Rev. Katie Hargis, Dean HAPPENINGS February 19, stmarkshastings@gmail.com The Forum Lyndle Lewis, Senior Warden During the season of Lent, we hear a lot about sin. Particularly, in this season, we are invited to reflect on what we do wrong or fail to do right; things done and left undone. But sin is a rather vague term. I suppose we are meant to fill in the blank ourselves about what sin means to us. We seldom hear someone else telling us what specific actions or inactions on our part constitute sin. We ve probably all heard the Ten Commandments and feel confident that we are not murderers, thieves, liars, etc. Most of us are just regular folks, going about our business, trying to do the right thing. Good enough, right? Well, yes and no. In our increasingly complex world, it is sometimes difficult to know what falls into the category of sin. It helps for me to ask, in each case, does this thought, word, deed, thing done, or left undone help or hinder my relationship with God? Do I feel my relationship getting a little stronger or getting a little weaker? By answering that question, I can usually spot a sin in the making and either strive to avoid it or, if too late for that, confess and ask for forgiveness. In many ways, God continuously calls us into a deeper understanding of who we are as children of God. And we each live and walk into that understanding in our own unique ways. As we draw closer to God, we begin to get a better idea of how our actions or inactions, our thoughts, words, and deeds, change us, for better or worse, in our relationship with God. In other words, sin changes us. Confession and repentance change us again. And, with infinite love and mercy, God forgives. And, in being forgiven, we see, feel, and know God s love at work in our lives. During Lent we are encouraged to do something different ; to do something that helps us to see more clearly God s love at work in our lives. What then are some of the practical things we can do? What practices or disciplines can help us deepen our relationship with God and help us live into our calling as God s children? On Wednesdays during Lent, we have a couple of opportunities. I invite you to make time for Sermons a la Carte, and our Wednesday evening soup and study program, and, as always, Sunday morning worship. 1

3 HAPPENINGS SUZUKI VIOLIN CLASS Beginning Tuesday, February 27 th, local violinist and instructor Mischa Johnson will bring her violin students to St. Mark s for a Group Rehearsal. If you ve ever been to one of Mischa s rehearsals, you see that every student participates from 3 years old up to 19 years of age. The fact that the 3 year olds and the big kids are playing together on some of the same tunes is so neat to watch. Mischa has a large studio, and to hear them all playing together is very beautiful and moving. The short rehearsals will begin at 7:15 pm, and run until about 7:45 pm - and they will take place on the following Tuesdays: February 27 th, March 6 th, and March 13 th. If you want to see lots of cute kids playing a classical instrument, and playing it well, or if you are just curious, please stop in for a listen. LENT SOUP SUPPER WITH GUEST SPEAKER Each Wednesday in Lent beginning February 21 st, we will gather at 6 p.m. for a soup supper in the Undercroft followed by a presentation from a guest speaker.
