1 The Tower Chimes The Newsletter of saintjames Episcopal Church + Goshen, New York April 2016 April stjamesgoshen@frontier.com Web-site: The Rev. M. Carl Lunden, Rector Our new Assisting Bishop Mary Glasspool will be here for Confirmation and Visitation on April 10th :30 am Service Only In his address to the 2015 Annual Diocesan Convention at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Manhattan, the Bishop of New York, the Rt. Rev. Andrew M.L. Dietsche, announced that the Rt. Rev. Mary Douglas Glasspool, who currently serves as Suffragan Bishop in the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles, will join the Diocese of New York as Assistant Bishop commencing on April 1, The Bishop's visitation is an important event in the life of both the congregation and the diocese. The norm for every visit is for the Bishop to celebrate the Eucharist, preach, and preside at confirmation. The sacraments of initiation - baptism and confirmation - are customary at the time of visitation, but not necessary. Parishioners can also be presented for reception into the Episcopal Church and to reaffirm their faith. The bishop will also meet with the vestry, and review the books in which the parish records of baptisms, marriages, confirmations and burials are recorded. It is also very much the preference of the bishops to officiate only at the principal service at the time of the visitation. Luncheon to follow the service. In addition to catered entrees, please sign-up to bring something. Stewardship Expo - April 17th after both services.

2 St. James Church THE TOWER CHIMES April 2106 STEWARDSHIP I hope everyone prepared for The Easter Season during Lent by prayerfully looking at our lives to see how we can be better Christians. Attending the Stations of the Cross services on Wednesday evenings was a good way to celebrate Lent along with attending the adult discussion group or bible study group. Jesus Christ is the central symbol of the experience of God for those who call themselves Christians. Christ is the symbol of God. We as humans all reflect on ourselves as unfinished. We speak of Jesus Christ as a symbol of fulfillment and therefore, we call him our Savior and Redeemer. Before the Christian community asks who Jesus is, it experiences him as He who speaks to our longing for completion. The disciples had been walking with Jesus for a long time when He asked the disciples at Philippi who do men say the son of God is? Mathew 16: 13. Why did they follow Jesus? It seems probable that it was a recognition that this man offered them the promise of fulfillment which they sought. Does Jesus Christ make a difference today? That question is somewhat more complicated than it has been made to appear. We see him as a symbol of fulfillment to our St. James community, but who is he? The New Testament is the product of oral and written tradition evolving over several generations. The historical Jesus lies hidden within successive layers of words and interpretations. Jesus was a man possessed by hope for the Kingdom of God. In Jesus, the Kingdom is not only preached, it is lived. He is the expectation of an order in the future which will free us from the absurdity of the present. As we contemplate the anticipated fulfillment of our lives and history, death remains the overwhelming problem. We can separate death and evil. We know death, and we do evil. We also die. The Jesus of the New Testament is the one who, like us, dies. The Cross is no accident on through way to the empty tomb. It is the prerequisite of the resurrection. In the Resurrection of Jesus Christ we believe that we have an authentic witness to the promise of a new future free from evil and death. The resurrection is the inevitable consequence of who Jesus is. He is the divine representation of our faith in creativity and order. The resurrection is the anticipation of what someday will be for all of us. The Kingdom which Jesus Christ preached and embodied is here now in his risen presence: it shall be in all creation. This means that death is not an end. In Christ we have a promise of our future. This is what we affirm in the creeds when we state our belief in the resurrection of the body that as Christ was raised, so shall we be raised. On Sunday April 17 th the Stewardship Committee will host the EXPO of organizations of St. James. After both the 9:00 AM and 10:30 AM services, the various organizations of St. James will be available in the chapel to discuss what they do and what you as a member can do in joining them. Please plan on joining us in the chapel to see how you can better meet your stewardship goals by joining an organization and getting involved in the life of the St. James community. 9 St. James Church THE TOWER CHIMES April 2016 There for us What I remember most is that she was always there for me. Those words always stayed with me when my cousin said this about his mother, my aunt, at her memorial service. My aunt was a wonderful person. She had a great sense of humor, was an excellent cook, down to earth, and more than anything else, had the character and personality that you just knew, she was always there for her family and friends. What a testament those words are for those that are living with us, and for those that have passed to their eternal rest. To earn a reputation of being there takes much so more than words. Actions and deeds over years and years prove to others beyond any shadow of a doubt that, no matter what, through thick and thin, there are certain people that will just always be there for us. God sends us those special people to be there for us in our good times and bad. They truly are blessings; and hopefully, we are known to others as that kind of person. Just knowing that there are people in the world that will drop anything to help us is a comfort that we can never take for granted. As we look ahead to Easter Sunday, the understanding of having some One there for us shines brighter and clearer than any other time of the year. Easter is the day that God raised His only Son from the painful earthly death He suffered on the Cross to give us the faith, hope and promise of eternal life. Easter Sunday bridges Jesus, the Son of God, that walked among us with Jesus, the Son of God, that is now raised to be with the Father. God did this for us, so that Jesus and His Spirit would be there for us, everywhere and anytime, throughout our lives here on earth and into eternity. With our Faith in Jesus, there is never any doubt that we have Someone there for us every minute of our lives. And as we look to the Cross, we know Jesus is there, for each and every one of us. There s nothing more powerful than looking at the Cross and knowing that the Son of God Himself, willingly carried the Cross on His shoulders to His own death to save us from our past, present and future sins, and offer us complete forgiveness. Easter is the time to take joy in looking at the Cross, and reaffirming our love for God by confidently knowing that there He is, Jesus, on the Cross and being so thankful that He s there for us. Have a wonderful and Blessed Easter Season, Dom Perfetti St. James Episcopal Church, Goshen, N.Y., established 1803
