For God so loved the world We are made in the image of God and forming and maintaining relationships is an essential part of how we are made. All healthy relationships are patterned after God s love for us and all of creation. Sometimes we initiate relationships and sometimes we respond to someone else s initiative. A lot of time and effort goes into building and maintaining our relationships. It is hard work and we keenly feel the loss when relationships end. All through human history, God has been the initiator of relationships with God s creation. For God so loved the world From beginning to end, the Bible is full of stories of God reaching into human lives offering love, help, and hope. In the Old Testament or Covenant, from Adam and Eve, through Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, Samuel, David, the tribes of ancient Israel, and countless others, God called real people, ordinary women and men, into personal and loving relationships. I will be your God and you will be my people. In the New Testament or Covenant God enters human history in the person of Jesus calling ordinary men and women into friendship and discipleship, sending them to tell others about God s love, inviting them and us into relationship. For God so loved the world enduring even death on the cross. God reaches out to us in love because it is God s nature to love, and God asks us to respond. How we respond is always our choice. The season of Lent is almost upon us. This season gives us an opportunity of to think about our own response to God s invitation to love, and to think about how to be good stewards of that relationship. Our Episcopal devotional book, Forward Day by Day is inviting us to read the Gospel of Luke and the book of Acts during Lent. Please consider including this in your Lenten discipline. These scriptures are full of stories about God reaching out to people like you and me, and the amazing things that can happen when ordinary people say yes to God. 1

3 HAPPENINGS LENT SOUP SUPPER WITH GUEST SPEAKER Each Wednesday in Lent beginning February 21st, we will gather at 6 p.m. for a soup supper in the Undercroft followed by a presentation from a guest speaker. A sign-up sheet to provide soup and bread is in the Common Room. Watch the Happenings for more information about that week s presentation.
